Star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is set to miss South Africa’s huge three-match Test series against Australia after suffering a grade 3 hamstring tear. Cricket South Africa (CSA) previously announced that Rabada picked up a hamstring injury during winter training, but the extent of the injury has now been revealed.
The hope was that Rabada would be available for a four-day match against Boland on September 10. But, the injury is worse than first feared.
According to a News 24 report, Lions bowling coach Allan Donald said “He’s going to be out for all the Aussie Tests as well,” in what is a massive blow for the Proteas.

Rabada will reportedly miss up to 10 weeks. He was instrumental in South Africa’s triumph against Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship Final, taking nine wickets at Lord’s.
Rabada is one of the finest fast bowlers of this generation with 340 wickets at 22.03. He also boasts the best strike rate in history (39.51) among bowlers with at least 113 Test wickets.
Overall against Australia, Rabada has taken 58 wickets in 11 Tests at an average of 21.39.
In terms of replacements, South Africa have some headaches with Nandre Burger recovering from a stress fracture in his back. Gerald Coetzee took 4/60 for South Africa A against Bangladesh A, and could win a place in the Proteas squad.
The South Africa-Australia Test series begins on October 9 in Durban. It will be Australia’s first visit to South Africa for a Test series since the infamous sandpapergate tour in 2018.
