India have prevailed in a close, hard-fought contest against archrivals Pakistan. Hardik Pandya was the star, following up his record performance against England last month with another magnificent all-round show in Dubai.
Walking in at 89/4 with 59 needed off 34 balls on a pitch where most players struggled for fluency, Hardik struck a calculated 33* off 17 balls after bouncing the Pakistani batsmen out to finish with 3/25 with the ball. It served a clear reminder as to the importance of Hardik Pandya to this India team, as he produced in the crunch stages to lead India to victory to kick off their 2022 Asia Cup campaign.
“It’s important to asses the situation and use your weapons,” said Hardik after winning the man of the match award. “The hard lengths particularly. But you have to use them wisely.”
“When it comes to batting, the chances I take when executing, I’m likelier to pullit off when I’m calmer. I knew they had Nawaz waiting to bowl, and while we needed 7, even if we needed 15 I would have fancied by chances,” he continued.

India and Pakistan will take on Hong Kong respectively in their remaining match of Group A. Both teams are expected to go through to the Super 4 stage, and will meet again if that is indeed the case.
For Pakistan, it was an encouraging show with the ball on a ground where chasing teams usually dominate. The excellent Naseem Shah led the way with the ball on T20I debut, as he continued to bowl quickly despite suffering cramp in the Dubai heat.
