There was a time a score of 249 was a strong score in ODIs. On Friday in Ranchi, India’s 249/5 was mowed down with eight deliveries to spare in a T20I.
Shai Hope continued his outstanding form, smashing an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls to steer his team. He was magnificently supported by Sherfane Rutherford (84 off 37 balls) and Romario Shepherd (34* off 13 balls) as the Indian bowlers had no answers. This is despite an excellent start where Mayank Yadav took two wickets in the first over.
That the West Indies chased the target so easily despite falling to 58/3 in the sixth over is a remarkable effort. It also highlights the gap Jasprit Bumrah leaves in the Indian bowling lineup. Earlier in the year, England very nearly chased 254 in the T20 World Cup Semi-Final in Mumbai, only for Bumrah to produce magic with the game to be won at the death.
Rutherford was dominant in his stand with Hope, and he made Mayank pay for a dropped catch when he was on 39. When Rutherford was dismissed, India continued with spin, and Hope and Rutherford obliged by cantering to the target.
IND vs WI 2nd T20 Twitter Reactions: Shai Hope continues his incredible tour
Hope now has scores of 104, 162*, 52 and 102* in his last four innings on this tour. He has produced whether West Indies bat first or second, although he has been particularly effective when chasing.
“Thing about cricket, I really believe that we need to bat a lot better in partnerships. It’s something that we tend to lack every now and again,” Hope said, as quoted by India Today.
“Maybe I could say it’s a good streak I’m having right now, but I just think the way I’m preparing, the way I’m trying to stay mentally fresh and ready, is giving me the best chance of performing. I just hope it continues along.”
For India, there are concerns regarding their defensive skills if their spinners don’t have a good outing. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav conceded 116 runs in 7.3 overs between them in a game where Roston Chase produced an outstanding spell of 3/24 in his four overs. Shreyas Iyer said the dew makes things very difficult.
“When the dew factor comes in, it plays a massive role,” Shreyas said. “You cannot give a number [on what a winning score is]. The margin of error on this wicket was very minor. Any minor error was going into the stands.”
Here are some of the reactions to a whirlwind game in Ranchi.
The series is now locked at 1-1 with the third T20I to be played at Indore on Sunday.
