Cricket News: India name ODI squad for South Africa series | Who made the India ODI squad for South Africa series?
Shikhar Dhawan is set to lead the Indian team for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa with the first game slated to be played in Lucknow on Thursday. Shreyas Iyer will be Dhawan’s deputy with the likes of middle-order batsman Rajat Patidar and fast-bowler Mukesh Kumar receiving their maiden national team call-ups as well.
Shubhman Gill, Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad make up the rest of the top-order with most of the seasoned stars being given a rest in the run-up to the T20 World Cup later this month. Ishan Kishan has made a comeback to the squad whereas Sanju Samson will be sharing the wicket-keeping responsibilities with the southpaw. West Bengal-based all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed, who plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made it to the 16-member squad as well.
Shahbaz will supplement the spin attack along with the wrist-spinning duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi.
The pace quartet comprises Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Avesh Khan, Mohammed Siraj and new entrant Mukesh Kumar-who has impressed for Bengal in the domestic circuit and turned up with impressive performances for India ‘A’ in their recent series vs their counterparts from New Zealand. Thakur might be expected to take up greater responsibilities with the bat in the absence of genuine all-rounders and also his solid outings in the aforementioned India ‘A’ series.
The three ODIs will be played in Lucknow, Ranchi and Delhi on 6th, 9th and 11th October respectively. The trio of Chahar, Iyer and Bishnoi are likely to join the Indian squad straight afterwards as they are a part of the standby list for the T20 World Cup.
