Mumbai Indians (MI) have made some further adjustments to their coaching staff before IPL 2027, releasing bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, as well as fielding coach Carl Hopkinson.
The latest decisions come shortly after the franchise parted ways with head coach Mahela Jayawardene. The five-time IPL champions have named Kieron Pollard as their new head coach.
Malinga has been associated with MI for an extended period, first as a player and then as a mentor and coach. He was instrumental in the franchise’s four IPL title triumphs and 2011 Champions League T20 win. MI thanked the Sri Lankan great in an official statement for his contribution to the franchise over the years.
Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey part ways with MI after long stints
“Lasith Malinga has been a part of the Mumbai Indians family and one of the most iconic figures in the history of the franchise,” the franchise said in a press statement.
“Lasith’s journey with MI has been special. Leading MI’s bowling attack and being a key member in winning four IPL titles and the 2011 Champions League T20 to coming back as a mentor and coach. His passion, his will to win and his commitment to the team has inspired generations of players. He will always be a key part of the Mumbai Indians’ legacy.”
Mhambrey also is out after two seasons with the franchise. His association with Mumbai Indians goes a while back; he was part of the support staff when the first IPL season was played in 2008. He was later part of the franchise from 2010 to 2017, where MI won IPL titles and two Champions League T20 tournaments.

“Paras has brought a tremendous amount of experience, dedication and a great understanding of the MI culture in both stints,” the MI statement read. “His role in unearthing and nurturing the team’s bowling talent and the relationships he has built over the years have been greatly appreciated.”
Ahead of the 2025 season, Hopkinson took over as the Mumbai Indians fielding coach from James Pamment. Prior to joining the IPL, he was the lead fielding coach of the England men’s team from 2018 to 2024.
He was a member of the ODI World Cup-winning setup for England in 2019 and the T20 World Cup-winning team in 2022. The changes are another massive overhaul of the Mumbai Indians coaching set-up as the franchise looks ahead to the 2027 IPL season under Pollard.
