Moeen Ali retired from international cricket in 2024 after playing for England in all three formats. The 39-year-old has continued to play domestic and franchise cricket. He appeared for Yorkshire in the T20 Blast and Southern Brave in The Hundred over the summer.
He has also taken an interest in coaching. Ali has been part of England Lions development programs and worked with Andrew Flintoff’s coaching staff during a white ball camp in the UAE in February. The former England all-rounder has now opened up about his plans and ambition for the next stage of his career.

Moeen Ali: “The ultimate dream is to coach England.”
Moeen Ali is now preparing for his next step as a coach. He is working toward the England and Wales Cricket Board Level Three qualification, which is an essential requirement for higher-level coaching positions. Speaking to Independent, Ali Said, “The ultimate dream is to coach England, of course, but I know there is a lot of work to put in before that.”
Ali’s going to have a lot of experience over the coming months and learn more about coaching. He knows that taking on a senior role will require time and effort.
Ali draws parallels between his playing career and his coaching plans. His leap from County cricket to the England team also took years of hard work. Now he feels he will need the same patience and commitment as he moves to coaching.
“I’ve been asked about doing Lions stuff quite often, but it’s been pretty difficult while I’m still playing. I think next year I’ll be a lot more available to do that,” Ali said.
“After this winter I’ll be more free to coach. Whether it’s the Lions, the under-19s, or whatever they want, it’s something I’m really looking forward to doing. I want to gain my experience and put in the hard yards as a coach,” he added.
