Cricket News: Pat Cummins named as Australia ODI captain | Pat Cummins replaces Aaron Finch as Australia ODI captain
Australia Test captain Pat Cummins has been unveiled as the country’s new ODI skipper, replacing the recently retired Aaron Finch. Cummins was one of a few candidates for the position, and was selected for the role after being endorsed by the Cricket Australia board.
The fast bowler is Australia’s 27th ODI captain. A three-match series against England in November could be his first assignment, should he get through the T20 World Cup unscathed.
Pat Cummins to captain Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup, others to step in along the way
Given his workload and important role as Test bowling leader and captain, Cummins is expected to take breaks between now and the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Should he not be available for any one-dayers, the likes of Alex Carey and even David Warner can take over for certain matches.
Speaking to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald ahead of Australia’s T20 World Cup opener against New Zealand this week, Cummins said that he does not want to be missing any Test matches, so workload management is key.
“We’ve got 12 months to the next World Cup and you can break it down a little bit for that,” he said. “I also think historically the idea that if you’re the captain you’ve got to play every single game, with our team, the reality is no one is going to play every game, there’s too many games in the calendar.”
“I certainly don’t want to be missing any Test matches because I’m cooked from another format. You could make it work where you’re not having to play every single game if it’s not in the best interests of the next Test series coming up, or something like that.”
To ensure everyone is fit for Tests and World Cups, Cummins said that sharing the responsibility in bilaterals along the way is vital. Alex Carey has already captained Australia in ODIs, in West Indies last year, and is a natural leader by all accounts.
“You can share those responsibilities amongst a few of the other senior guys. [Test series and world cups] are the ones you want everyone playing for, they’re obviously the pinnacle, and then you work back from them,” Cummins said.
Selection chair George Bailey said Cummins’ excellent leadership of the Test side – that now includes an Ashes series win and victory in Pakistan – won him the role of ODI captain.
“Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India,” Bailey said.

Just four days after the T20 World Cup Final, Australia will take on England in a three-match ODI series. As a key member of the T20 bowling attack, it remains to be seen whether Cummins actually lines up in this series. Alex Carey could be the player who leads the team.
