Shreyas Iyer broke the record for the most expensive IPL player in history (before Rishabh Pant did not long after) after Punjab Kings (PBKS) forked out a whopping INR 26.75 crore (approx. US$3.17 million) to acquire his services.
Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title in 2024. His leadership attracted the interest of new coach Ricky Ponting in particular.
After the huge purchase, Ponting told Star Sports, “I wanted to work with Shreyas, I have worked with him before. Ge is a great guy & great player. He will be a great leader if we decide to go that way which I am pretty sure we probably will and he won the Championship last year as Captain – so there is a lot of things that he brings to Punjab,” as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Reactions: Will Shreyas Iyer live up to his 26.75 crore price tag?
As always, there were plenty of reactions on social media. Fans took to X to share their views, with some believing the price is far too high despite PBKS coming into the auction with a huge purse. Others believe Shreyas can offer plenty from a leadership perspective.
