The 2026/27 Sheffield Shield season will begin on October 7 at Melbourne’s Junction Oval. Victoria will take on two-time defending champions South Australia in a repeat of last season’s final.
South Australia, after a 29-year wait, have won two Shield titles in a row. They looked gone in the 2025/26 final before an Alex Carey hundred and superb all-round performance from Nathan McAndrew inspired the most remarkable of turnarounds.
Eyes on the batters and fast bowlers in the 2026/27 Sheffield Shield
Elsewhere, New South Wales will kickstart their campaign against Tasmania at Sydney’s Cricket Central on October 8. Western Australia take on Queensland at the WACA, starting the same day.

It is a big season for the batsmen and fast bowlers as a period of transition awaits for the Australian men’s team. None of the top 11 run-scorers last season averaged above 40, with the highest Kuris Patterson’s 36.41. The bowling-friendly pitches have been in the spotlight, and there could be a shift towards more balanced surfaces.
“We all want to see a good balance between bat and ball,” said Peter Roach, Cricket Australia’s head of scheduling and domestic cricket, as quoted by cricinfo.
“We want the games to go a reasonable distance … so when you’re seeing games finish in two days and two and a half days, as the case may be in Shield matches, and we see across the board a season where we’re seeing less runs and less overs of spin being bowled, they’re things that we try and discuss with our stakeholders around the country.”
The performances of fast bowlers will also be of interest. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Scott Boland are closer to the end of their international careers, with a new generation of quicks required to come through. Liam Hatcher took the most wickets last season (44) at a superb average of 19.84, but he turns 30 this year.
The 2026/27 season will also feature a Shield match at Perth Stadium for the first time in eight years. Western Australia will take on Tasmania from November 23, less than two weeks before the first Test between Australia and New Zealand at the same venue.
“The Sheffield Shield match at Perth Stadium will also provide players, coaches and staff the valuable opportunity to familiarise themselves at the venue under match conditions before the NRMA Insurance West Test and KFC BBL|16 in the ensuing two months,” said WA Cricket’s high performance boss Kade Harvey, as quoted by cricket.com.au.
