Cricket News: T20 World Cup 2022 Group B Qualification scenarios | Which teams will reach the Super 12s out of Group B?
The on-going ICC T20 World Cup in Australia has begun on a positive note with associates like Namibia and Scotland defeating heavyweights such as Sri Lanka and West Indies in their opening fixtures. These upsets have thrown the Super 12 qualification stage wide open. Currently, all the four sides in Group B, namely: Scotland, Zimbabwe, West Indies and Ireland are level at two points after two games with a win and a loss to their name each.
Group B Qualification Scenarios: Who will qualify for the Super 12s?
1. Scotland
- 2 points
- NRR: +0.759
- Final match: Zimbabwe
Scotland defeated West Indies courtesy an incredible all-round effort but they were downed by Ireland in their second game of the tournament on Wednesday. The Irishmen chased down 177 runs thanks to an incredible Campher-Dockrell partnership, and the Scottish unit will be eager to re-assess their bowling unit ahead of their final encounter against Zimbabwe.
Their most straightforward way to qualify for the next stage is by emerging victorious in their upcoming game at the Blundstone Arena in Hobart. Regardless of the result in that game, Scotland might just manage to make the cut to the next round courtesy their impressive NRR as compared to the other teams in the group.
2. Zimbabwe
- 2 points
- NRR: +0.000
- Final match: Scotland
Zimbabwe recorded a convincing victory against Ireland in their opening game. They put up 174 runs on the board and defended it fairly well in the second innings. However, they succumbed to a disappointing loss against the West Indies in the following match.
The Zimbabweans can take some heart from their performance in the first match but will need to really step up against a spirited Scottish side. Their NRR took a hit after the 31-run defeat against West Indies, but that does not matter as victory against Scotland will seal their qualification.
3. West Indies
- 2 points
- NRR: -0.275
- Next match: Ireland
The men from the Caribbean suffered a harsh setback in their opening match of the tournament against Scotland. However, Alzarri Joseph’s terrific spell propelled them to a morale-boosting win against Zimbabwe in the second match.
Nicholas Pooran’s men are too good to miss out on the Super 12 stage of the World Cup. However, they will have to be wary of any possible batting collapse vs Ireland in order to avoid another upset. The equation for them is quite simple as of now. They win against the Irishmen and qualify to the next round straightaway.
4. Ireland
- 2 points
- NRR: -0.468
- Next match: West Indies
Ireland are riding high on confidence after chasing down 177 quite comfortably against Scotland in the last match. Curtis Campher played an absolute blinder as he notched 72 runs at a strike rate of 225 and hence the team might not rule out defeating West Indies in their final match. If they do, they will qualify for the Super 12s regardless of the margin.
