Reactions were widespread after India broke their 11-year ICC trophy drought with a dramatic, heart-stopping seven-run win over South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final in Barbados.
With Heinrich Klaasen playing a match-turning innings, it looked like India’s drought was about to extend, with South Africa on track to end their own trophy drought that extends to the 1998 Champions Trophy in Bangladesh. With 30 off 30 needed off the back of a 24-run over, the Proteas looked on course with six wickets in hand.
However, with Jasprit Bumrah in your team and Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh in strong form, anything is possible. India scrapped and fought to limit South Africa to just 14 runs in the next 24 balls, with Suryakumar Yadav taking a superb catch on the boundary to dismiss the dangerous David Miller on the first ball of the final over.
South Africa fell just short in another heartbreak in World Cup games. For India, emotions were high, with relief and joy in equal measure as they lifted the T20 World Cup title for the first time since 2007.
In the process, linchpins Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their respective retirements from T20 cricket. Rahul Dravid also marked the end of his coaching stint with the title. It was the perfect way to bow out.
