Cricket News: What is the most number of sixes hit in an IPL season by all teams combined?

The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is on track to see the most sixes hit by all teams. A whopping 438 sixes were struck before the 27th match between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

The six-per-match ratio of 16.85 is the highest in IPL history. The shift in approach by teams to power-hitting throughout the innings, brought on even more by the Impact Player rule, has seen this spike in numbers compared to the earlier years. Also, the skill of players continue to evolve, with young Indian batsmen emerging over the past few seasons in conjunction with the overseas stars.

Most number of sixes in total in a single IPL season

Currently, the most sixes hit in a season was in 2023. A whopping 1,124 sixes were struck, with 15.39 per match – the highest in a full season. The next-highest is 1,062 achieved the year before in 2022.

Here is a look at the number of sixes in each IPL season dating back to 2008.

63810.632016
62210.542008

If IPL 2024 continues on its current trajectory of 16.85 sixes per match, there will be a total of 1,247 sixes. The number of sixes that we may see could be anything, but there is no doubt that this season is odds on favourite to become the year where the most maximums are struck in a single IPL season.
