South Africa legend and one of the best fast bowlers of all time, Dale Steyn, has said that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are playing outdated cricket compared to how other teams are playing.
Talking with AB de Villiers on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers 360, Dale Steyn spoke about the contrast in how other franchises have built their squads and the players they’ve picked and even on the intent front with the bat.
CSK playing outdated cricket despite injuries – Dale Steyn
He said, “For CSK, lot of injuries, and maybe I am going out of place when saying this but slightly outdated cricket. You know, they’ve had the same management for a long time. I hold nothing against Flem (Stephen Fleming) or or any other guys there, but I mean, last year bottom of the log. This year really petering again at the bottom of the log.”
“And you look at the other teams and the way that they’re playing and the squads that they’ve picked and the players that they have picked, and the intent that they’re showing is contrasting to the way that CSK are going about things and again contrasting in where they are on the log, top versus bottom,” Steyn further added.
“So, you know, there’s an argument to be made there that maybe management also needs to step up their game in terms of how they go about their game plans and how they want to play their cricket.”
CSK’s struggles since IPL 2023
CSK won the title under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in IPL 2023, after which Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed as his successor. Since then, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2024 and 2025. Their chances are looking quite bleak in IPL 2026 as well.
Although they’ve had their struggles with injuries, their approach has been questioned a lot by the fans on social media. While other teams have packed their batting with players who attack from the first ball and can win games in a matter of few overs only, CSK, on the other hand, still feel 4-5 years behind in terms of batting intent and adaptability.
