Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen warned that England must overcome this trend, but they made a horror start, getting bowled out for 147 after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.
Rory Burns had his leg stump uprooted on the first ball of the series by Mitchell Starc, sparking wild celebrations from the Australian players and crowd. It only got worse from there, including a duck for skipper Joe Root as England then crumbled to 29/4.
Despite the fighting efforts by Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler, you always felt a wicket could come. That’s exactly what happened, as England went on to lose their last five wickets for 35 runs to concede the advantage on day one.
Before heavy rain put an end to the day’s play, Pat Cummins made the perfect start to life as Australia captain. The new skipper took his first five-wicket haul against England, which included the big wicket of Ben Stokes. The world’s number one bowler had the ball on a string, finishing with 5/38 to give Australia a huge psychological advantage for the rest of the series.
England fans may have been tempted to go to sleep as wickets tumbled early on day one of the Ashes.
