“This Bumrah is something else,” exclaimed Rob Key on commentary. He is spot on.
The great India fast bowler inspired a terrific victory for India at The Oval, after producing a spell in the second session that will be remembered for a while to come. Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav all chipped in at crucial stages, backed by Virat Kohli’s captaincy where everything he touched turn into gold.
Thakur in particular was outstanding. He scored two crucial half-centuries and took the all-important wickets of Rory Burns and Joe Root on the final day. Now, for the first time since 2007, India will leave England without a Test series defeat to their name. Like Lord’s, this was another win to savour, after coming from behind in the first innings following a disappointing 191 all-out in the first dig.
From there, India controlled the match, ammassing a big lead that was too big an ask for an England lineup that still relies too much on Joe Root.
India’s quest for a fine series triumph begins on Friday at Manchester. For now, it is time for India to celebrate, courtesy of a 157-run victory underpinned by a clinical display across the final two days of the match. Plus, it is their first victory at The Oval since 1971 – a terrific moment.
England fought hard, but ultimately their first innings batting effort kept India in the match. Then, the lack of effective spin bowling hampered them in the second innings, with their pacemen asked to do a mountain of bowling. With the fifth and final Test starting later this week, England have a mighty task to try and avoid a series defeat.
