After a very long wait, the Women’s Premier League is finally here. There are a total of five teams, with players from all around the globe participating in the showpiece tournament. A total of 22 matches will be played including the playoffs. Gujarat Giants will lock horns with the Mumbai Indians women in the historic first game.

Gujarat Giants have the likes of Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, Harleen Deol, Sophia Dunkley, Kim Garth, Annabel Sutherland and Sneh Rana as their big names. They have some good batters and quality all-rounders but they look a little light in the pace bowling department and lack experienced domestic pacers. Deandra Dottin is ruled out of the tournament and it is a huge loss for Gujarat, but they have an excellent core of overseas players who need to perform consistently for them to do well.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have a strong line-up. The likes of Harmanpreet Kaur, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, Hayley Matthews and Heather Graham form a very strong core. However, they also lack a bit in the pace bowling department as both Pooka Vastrakar and Natalie Sciver-Brunt are in not the best of form with the ball. Heather Graham will be their lead pacer. They have an explosive batting unit with good depth. Mumbai will be eyeing a win to start off their journey in the WPL.

  • Ashleigh Gardner is in excellent form and she’ll be a very important player for Gujarat. She won player of the tournament in the recent World Cup. She scored 110 runs in five innings at an average of 36.66 and had 10 wickets to her name.
  • Annabel Sutherland will be a key player for Gujarat after Deandra Dottin was ruled out of the tournament. She is a capable all-rounder and can win games with both bat and ball. Sutherland scored 304 runs at an average of 33.77 and picked up 21 wickets in WBBL 2022.
  • Sneh Rana will be an important bowler for Gujarat. She bowls very economically and is handy with the bat as well. Rana has 24 wickets in 25 WT20Is at an economy of 6.21. Rana can bowl in any phase of the innings.

Mumbai Indians Women

  • Natalie Sciver-Brunt is one of best all-rounders in women’s cricket. She was the 2nd highest run-scorer of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 with 216 runs at an average of 72 in five innings. Brunt can bowl 2-3 overs as well.
  • Amelia Kerr is the best all-rounder in Mumbai’s squad. She will bat at number three and will bowl four overs of her leg spin. Kerr is a match-winner with both bat and ball. She has been a consistent performer for the White Ferns and will look to repeat the same in the WPL.
  • West Indian Hayley Matthews is another excellent all-rounder in the Mumbai squad. She bats very aggressively at the top and bowls handy off-spin. Matthews scored 130 runs in the recently concluded Women’s T20 World Cup at an average of 43.33 and she picked up four wickets as well.
  • Harmanpreet Kaur hasn’t been in the best of form lately but she is a champion player and we all know how capable she is. She struck an excellent 34-ball 52 in the recent semi-final against Australia. Kaur can also roll her arm over if required.

The pitch at the DY Patil Sports Academy will be an excellent one for batting. The ball will come onto the bat nicely and there will be plenty of runs on offer for the batters. Pacers will get some movement with the new ball in the powerplay while the spinners will come into play as the game progresses.

The average first innings score here in women’s cricket is 180 runs and chasing sides have won both the games. A warm and clear evening is forecast.

2023 will see the oldest rivalry in all of cricket return as Australia travel to England to contest the Ashes series. The most recent series took place down under and ended with a resounding 4-0 victory for the hosts. Australia will be looking to retain the urn on foreign soil for the second consecutive time; something they haven’t achieved since the turn of the millennium when the likes of Shane Warne and Glen McGrath were at their peak.

But since former New Zealand wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum took over as England’s head coach last summer, his side have gone from strength to strength. His captain, Ben Stokes, is leading brilliantly, and the duo are aiming to bring cricketing glory back to England.

When Australia hosts the Ashes, they tend to dominate. England haven’t won a series down under in over a decade, and the aggregate score since they last won a Test in Australia is 13-0. But when the series takes place on English soil, the series tend to be tightly contested.

Also, the dreary weather in the UK can cause swing bowlers to have an absolute field day, resulting in some paltry scores posted. Here are the two lowest totals posted in an English Ashes Series since 2005.

Broad’s Trent Bridge Masterclass

The 2015 Ashes Series was on a knife-edge as we headed into the fourth Test at Trent Bridge. England held a slender 2-1 lead however, Australia had flexed their muscles in recent Tests and managed to pick up a whopping 405-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s. England knew, however, that victory in Nottingham would rip the Ashes away from their biggest rivals.

On the first morning of the first Test, the clouds formed over Trent Bridge, and whoever won the Test knew that opting to field could result in a healthy first innings lead. Luckily for the hosts, it was they who won the toss, and captain Joe Root happily elected to field. Openers Chris Rogers and David Warner came to the crease knowing that they were in for a tough time, however, they couldn’t have known just how tough things were about to be.

Rogers was duly dismissed after just three balls, and three balls later danger man Steve Smith was removed, both victims of the brilliant Stuart Broad. On the second ball of his spell, Mark Wood dismissed Warner, and England had the tourists reeling at 10/3 after just eight balls. Brilliant Broad could smell blood, and he sprung into action.

Broad went on a rampage in the 2015 Ashes

Shaun Marsh was the next to depart, caught at slip by Ian Bell after another wicked delivery. Then it was the turn of the hapless Adam Voges who nicked another stunning delivery by Broad to Ben Stokes at slip. The current England captain flew to his right and took a stunning catch to leave Australia at 21/5.

Captain Michael Clarke would survive just 15 balls before Broad removed him, then Steven Finn picked up his first and only wicket when he clean bowled wicketkeeper Peter Nevill for just 2 runs. Australia were now 33/7 and in real trouble of being humiliated. Mitchell Johnson managed to hit a quickfire 13 – the best score of any Australian batsman – however both he and Mitchell Starc were removed within three balls of each other, once again by Stuart Broad.

Tailenders Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon managed to post 13 runs between them before Broad had Lyon caught behind leaving Australia all out for a measly 60 runs. Broad ended the session with career-best figures of eight wickets for just 15 runs and England eventually romped to victory by an innings and 78 runs.

Stokes Rescues England From the Brink

Just as was the case four years prior, the 2019 Ashes Series was also on knife edge as we headed into the third Test. Australia led 1-0 prior to the showdown at Headingley and they knew that if they managed to win this Test, they would retain the Ashes on English soil for the first time since 2001. They couldn’t have wished for a better start when they had England bowled all out for 67 on the opening day.

This time around, England once again won the toss and once again elected to field. They had Australia bowled all out for 179 and were feeling quietly confident of victory. But on the evening of the first day, everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

Australia’s brilliant bowling attack of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and James Pattinson was in devastating form. Openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy managed to survive until the fourth over, but once Cummins had the aforementioned Roy caught behind, the wheels began to come off for England. Captain Joe Root was gone for a second ball duck off the bowling of Hazlewood, and the Aussies began to fire.

Burns, Stokes, Joe Denly, and Jonny Bairstow would all fall in quick succession. England’s tail end did their best to survive the onslaught however, the dangerous Jos Buttler was removed and the writing was on the wall. Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, and Jack Leach were all sent packing and the hosts finished 67 all out.

Thanks to the brilliance of Ben Stokes on day four, who smashed an unbeaten 135, England somehow managed to pick up the victory and keep the series alive.

There is a bit of soul searching to do for Islamabad United and Karachi Kings. After sailing through PSL 2023 quite nicely, Islamabad hit an iceberg in their thrashing at the hands of Lahore on February 27, where they lost ten wickets for 49 runs to be bowled out for 90.

Karachi are also in desperation mode, with just two wins out of seven games. Last time out, Mohammad Amir was at his best to reduce Peshawar to 2/3, but the Kings were still unable to seal victory, despite Imad Wasim’s excellent innings. Indeed, such individual performances have been a feature of Karachi’s season, but their inability to produce complete performances continue to hurt them.

For Islamabad, the key will be to bounce back and solidify their position in the top four. As previous games showed, their batting can fire on the day to post a huge score.

England Test head coach Brendon McCullum has placed his faith on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to look after Ben Stokes as the all-rounder insists on fulfilling his Rs 16.25 crore worth contract for the Indian Premier League ahead of a busy summer.

Stokes’ left knee requires constant attention and he visibly suffered whilst carrying out both batting and bowling responsibilities during England’s recent second Test against New Zealand at Basin Reserve. The Ashes 2023 is set to begin at Edgbaston from June 16 and the finals of IPL 2023 will be held on May 28.

McCullum, who represented CSK across two seasons from 2014-15, expressed confidence in the franchise and instead said that he is excited to see Stokes play without the burden of captaincy.

“The Chennai set-up is excellent in looking after their players and they’ve a very good medical team and he will be well looked after. The skipper has a strong mind and he knows how to get right for the big moments,” McCullum’s statement was quoted in a report by ESPN Cricinfo.

The tactician added, “I have got a tee-time with him (Fleming) tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. So I will be talking to him and making sure he looks after the skipper, but I know that Chennai set-up actually. I played in that franchise and they are very good. They have got a good team and an outstanding leader in Flem.”

McCullum has refrained from discussing the Ashes so far. He reportedly labels it as an unhealthy English obsession but is gradually acknowledging the hype surrounding the series. England last won the Ashes in 2015 but have been in an imperious run of form since McCullum took over the coaching duties. They have won 10 out of the 12 games since then, losing the latest to New Zealand by a bare margin of one run.

“Now we can really get excited about it, I think we have tried to live in the moment rather than look too far ahead and make sure that we’re really present with what we’re doing. Now we have the opportunity to really start to plot and plan, and turn our attention to what’s going to be a pretty amazing time in the guys’ lives: an Ashes series at home against a good Australian side,” McCullum mentioned in the aforementioned report.

Several English stars like Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, Jofra Archer amongst others have to fulfil their IPL commitments prior to the commencement of the Test summer. Stokes’ influence in the Test setup has been palpable since he took over the captaincy responsibilities and hence his presence will be instrumental in ensuring that England break their Ashes drought with an inspiring performance in June-July this month.

Fourteen wickets fell on the first day of the third Test between India and Australia at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Wednesday. The home side was bowled out for 109 as Matthew Kuhnemann scalped five dismissals and spun a web around the Indian team.

Rohit Sharma called it right at the toss and opted to bat first in a move that backfired on a really tricky surface. The pitch came under the scanner on social media for the assistance it provided to spin bowlers right from the opening day of the Test onwards. Surprisingly though, the duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel could not bag any wickets in their combined 25 overs. Australia have secured a lead of 47 runs with Peter Handscomb (7*) and Cameron Green (6*) to start proceedings in the second day of the Test match.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as well as India’s possible appearance in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) at the Oval in June. The Mumbai Indians (MI) pacer is yet to recover from the back injury that ruled him out of the T20 World Cup in October-November last year.

Bumrah is rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical staff at the facility has recommended the bowler to undergo a surgery to recover from the recurring niggles in his lower back.

The board will take a final call on this matter in consultation with the NCA and Bumrah keeping the larger backdrop of the ODI World Cup in October-November this year in consideration. Bumrah has been tipped to make a comeback more than once since suffering his stress injury for the first time in August last year.

He missed the Asia Cup, made a brief return for the Australia T20Is but sat out of the following T20Is against South Africa and has been out of action ever since. He was named in the squad for the One Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka but was pulled out of that after he suffered discomfort carrying out higher workloads during a fitness drill in Mumbai in January.

Test results showed that a niggle had developed that ruled him out of contention for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has now dampened his hopes of featuring in the IPL or the WTC final as well. In January, Rohit had expressed a hope for Bumrah to play in the final two Tests of the series against Australia but simultaneously cautioned against rushing him into the thick of things considering the seriousness of back injuries in general.

“The back injuries are always critical. We have got lot of cricket coming up after that as well, we will see, and we will monitor. We are in constant touch with doctors and physios at NCA and we are constantly hearing from them,” Rohit had said back then, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo.

1. England beat Australia by 10 runs, Sydney 1894

The first happened way back in the 42nd Test in 1894 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia amassed 586 in the first innings, led by George Giffen (161) and Syd Gregory (201). England responded with 325 and then 437 when sent into bat again.

Defending 177, Bobby Peel produced a spell of 6/67, supported by Johnny Briggs’ 3/25. Australia were cruising at 130/2, only to lose their last eight wickets for 36 runs to fall short by ten runs.

2. England beat Australia by 18 runs, Headingley 1981

The next instance happened nearly 100 years later. It was England against Australia once again, this time at Headingley.

Australia, who hit 401/9 declared, blew England away for 174 thanks to Dennis Lillee (4/49), Terry Alderman (3/59) and Geoff Lawson (3/32). With England reeling again at 135/7 in the second innings, the legendary Ian Botham smashed 149* to give England a fighting 129-run lead.

It was another legend – Bob Willis – who then dismanted the Australia lineup with 8/43 to bowl them out for 111. The tourists were never able to bounce back after this defeat, losing the next two Tests to lose the 1981 Ashes series.

3. India beat Australia by 171 runs, Kolkata, 2001

One of the great Test wins in history. Australia, who came into the Test having won their previous 16 matches, including the first Test of the 2001 series against India, took a 276-run lead on the first innings.

However, not even the most optimistic of Indian fans could have dreamt of what would happen next. Still trailing by 44 at 232/4, VVS Laxman (281) and Rahul Dravid (180) combined for a famous 376-run partnership that sent Eden Gardens into raptures.

4. New Zealand beat England by 1 run, Wellington, 2023

Without a doubt one of the greatest Tests of all time. Neil Wagner, who had gone to all parts previously in the series, fought back to deliver a memorable New Zealand victory.

After being blown away by Harry Brook and Joe Root, New Zealand then found themselves 103/7 in pursuit of England’s 435/8. Tim Southee (73) and Tom Blundell (38) helped bring the deficit down to 216 to keep their heads above water.

Surprisingly, England chose to enforce the follow on. Five of New Zealand’s top seven hit a 50+ score in the second dig, with the classy Kane Williamson top scoring with 132. However, the Black Caps lost their last four wickets for just five runs, leaving thoughts in the back of everyone’s minds that 258 might just be a little too short against England.

It seemed that way as Root and Ben Stokes took England to 201/5 after the depths of 80/5. But, Wagner and Southee rallied to pull off a victory by one run, after Ben Foakes (35) looked set to get England over the line. What a game.

The most significant – and upsetting – is captain Pat Cummins, who is by his mother’s side in palliative care. He will miss the third Test at Indore.

India are overwhelming favourites. However, Australia are expecting two welcome additions. Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green are set to return. There is still plenty to play for, with a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final up for grabs.
