Chetan Sharma steps down as India chief selector after explosive sting operation

Cricket News: Chetan Sharma steps down as India chief selector after explosive sting operation | Chetan Sharma steps down

Indian chief selector Chetan Sharma has tendered his resignation to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) general secretary Jay Shah following a sting operation in which Sharma divulged multiple controversial remarks on the national team setup.

The BCCI has accepted his relinquishment of the post and it is likely that East Zone selector Shiv Sundar Das will replace Sharma, Cricbuzz reports.

Sharma claimed that Indian players take injections that escape the scrutiny of the anti-doping tests to boost their fitness prior to games. He also revealed that skippers like Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya visit him in house frequently.

The former Indian pacer delved into the suspected rift between ex-skipper Virat Kohli and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly by saying that Kohli defamed Ganguly as he felt that the latter was responsible for him losing his ODI captaincy.

Players and certain members of the team management had lost their trust in Sharma as certain cricketers were reluctant of speaking to him now given that he has let out their private discussions in the media, Indian Express reports.

“It was just a matter of time. Once the players lost the trust, it was always going to be difficult for Sharma to continue,” a source in the know of developments was quoted in a report by the aforementioned newspaper.

“Chetan spoke a bit too much. None of the top India players talk to him. Have you seen him speak to Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma publicly in any training session. He would stand in one corner during T20 World Cup in Australia and no one bothered to speak to him,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Sharma was sacked as the chief selector following India’s semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup last year. However, he was reappointed to the post in January 2023 reportedly as not many fresh names came up in the new process.

MUL vs PES Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: PSL 2023 Match 5 | MS vs PZ Dream11 Prediction Today | Multan Pitch Report

Match five of PSL 2023 promises to be an absolute beauty. Peshawar Zalmi, on the back of a magnificent performance by Tom Kohler-Cadmore, won a thriller against Karachi three nights ago. His partnership with Babar Azam was the perfect mix of aggression and class, and Peshawar will be aiming for another perfect result here to mark a strong start to the campaign.

For Multan Sultans, they got their season up and running with a thumping nine-wicket win over Quetta. Ihsanullah looks a magnificent talent, and the openers have looked good already so far this season. Indeed, another win here will help erase the disappointment of their first-up defeat to Lahore where they looked set for victory.

WI-W vs IN-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Match 9 | IN-W vs WI-W Dream11 Prediction Today | Cape Town Pitch Report

West Indies and India will lock horns in the 9th match of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

West Indies women lost their first game against England by seven wickets. Batting is their weak link as they depend heavily on Hayley Matthews to do the bulk of the scoring. None of the other batters except one or two gives any confidence with the bat. They have a decent bowling attack but they’ll need their batters to support them.

India, meanwhile, won a close-fought game against Pakistan by seven wickets. The bowlers did well for the majority of the innings and the batters then kept their cool and chased down the target with one over to spare, with Jemimah Rodrigues producing a quality knock. India will look to continue their good form and register their second win of the tournament.

Will Shreyas Iyer play the second Test against Australia?

Indian middle-order star Shreyas Iyer is likely to join back the national squad for the second Test against Australia scheduled to be held in New Delhi from February 17-21. Iyer was nursing a back injury at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru over the last month.

He suffered a swelling in his lower back after the two-Test series against Bangladesh in December. That ruled him out of contention for the One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand in January and even the opening game of the ongoing series in Nagpur.

Iyer had to take injections at the NCA and the entire rehabilitation process took longer than expected. Now, the stage seems to be set for him to reclaim the number five slot in the playing XI – ahead of Suryakumar Yadav who debuted in the red-ball format for India in the first Test.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper is one of the India’s finest players of spin bowling, having starred in the subcontinent ever since debuting in the format in November 2021 against New Zealand. He has featured in only seven Tests but boasts of an excellent average of 56.73 to go with five half-centuries and even a century as well.

He helped India clinch crucial victories in Bangladesh en route the team’s pursuit of a spot in the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC).

In the first Test, he entered the crease at a delicate stage when the score stood at 112-4. Together with Cheteshwar Pujara, Iyer struck an integral partnership and notched 86 runs in the process to help take the team to a respectable total of 404.

He followed it up with another fantastic knock of 87 in the second game in Dhaka. The Mumbai batsman came in with four wickets down and the team still trailing the home side by 133 runs. He forged a formidable partnership with Rishabh Pant, dominating the Bangladeshi spinners in their own backyard and helping India attain an important 86-run lead in the first innings.

Double century in whites against Australia

Iyer has previously asserted his dominance against Australia in whites, which was a practice match in the lead up to the 2017 series between the two sides in India. Playing for India A, the batsman had hammered 202 including 27 boundaries and seven sixes at the Brabourne Stadium against an Australian bowling unit that included their frontline spinners like Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keffe.

Will he replicate that performance in New Delhi again? Let us know by tweeting at @cric_blog.

AU-W vs BD-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Match 8 | AUS-W vs BAN-W Dream11 Prediction Today | Cape Town Pitch Report

The mighty Australian women’s team will take on Bangladesh in the 8th game of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. Australia won their first game against New Zealand by 97 runs while Bangladesh was defeated by Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in their first match.

The Australian women’s team is by far the strongest side in the competition. They have excellent depth in their squad and all the players are capable of winning matches on their own. They scored 173 runs and bundled out the White Ferns for just 76 in their first game. They will look to win this game as well and strengthen their position in the points table.

Bangladesh women, on the other hand, were decent in the first game against Sri Lanka. The batters failed to convert their starts into big scores while the bowlers started off well but failed to capitalise. Bangladesh needs to be at their best to give themselves any chance of winning this game.

Australia:

  • Alyssa Healy scored 55 runs in the first game. She is an aggressive opener and can score big when on song. Healy scored 83 runs in the only game she has played against Bangladesh.
  • Beth Mooney got out cheaply in the first game but she is a class batter and has been a consistent performer for Australia. She has a score of 81 runs against Bangladesh in one match.
  • Darcie Brown will trouble the Bangladeshi batters with her pace and bounce. She will be an important bowler for her team. Brown picked up one wicket in the first game.
  • Megan Schutt is one of the best pacers in world cricket. She swings the new ball and is equally effective in the death overs as well. She has three wickets in one match against Bangladesh.
  • It is unlikely that Ashleigh Gardner will get to bat in this match but she picked up 5 wickets in the last match against New Zealand. She is a brute hitter as well if presented with the opportunity.

  • Skipper Nigar Sultana scored 28 runs in the first game. She will be a key batter for her side in the middle overs.

WPL Auction: Top 5 Most Expensive Players

Cricket News: WPL Auction: Top 5 Most Expensive Players | Most expensive players from the WPL 2023 Auction

The inaugural auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) rounded off with the five franchises collectively shelling out Rs 59.5 crore for 87 players in Delhi on Monday 13 February.

Top Indian internationals along with the stars from India’s recent victorious campaign in the U19 Women’s World Cup were the flavour of the day with teams breaking the bank to get them in their squad. Without further ado, let us take a look at the five most expensive picks from the auction.

Top 5 expensive players in WPL 2023

Smriti Mandhana – Royal Challengers Bangalore

Indian batter Smriti Mandhana emerged as the most expensive pick in the auction as the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) paid Rs 3.4 crore to acquire her services. The southpaw averages 27.33 with a strike rate of 122 in 112 T20Is and has represented franchises like the Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Western Storm, Trailblazers, Southern Brave and Sydney Thunder previously.

She has notched 20 half-centuries in the shortest format of the game for India and is arguably the most complete batswoman to have excelled in all formats and all stages from the country. Her topping this chart should not come across as a surprise.

Ashleigh Gardner – Gujarat Giants

25-year-old Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner secured a sum of Rs 3.2 crore to turn up for the Gujarat Giants in the inaugural edition of the WPL. Gardner has an impressive strike rate of 133.62 in the 68 T20Is at an average of 26.73. She has six half-centuries to her name and has also scalped 48 wickets at an economy rate of 6.23.

A gun middle-order bat, Gardner has all the skills to lit up the tournament with her promising skills in all walks of the game. The Gujarat-based franchise is also comparatively lighter in terms of their domestic talents and they will expect their most lucrative pick to do well in those circumstances.

Natalie Sciver – Mumbai Indians

Natalie Sciver was roped in for Rs 3.2 crore by Mumbai Indians – the exact same fee that Gujarat paid for Gardner. The Englishwoman has been one of the stalwarts of the national team recently and she possesses the all-round skillsets to justify that pedigree. Sciver has an average and strike rate of 25.37 and 112.65 respectively in 105 T20Is.

Sciver has also struck nine half-centuries and has taken 78 wickets at an economy of 6.46 in T20Is. She has been around the block in T20 franchise cricket – having represented the likes of Melbourne Stars Women, Perth Scorchers Women, Surrey Stars and also the Trent Rockets Women.

Deepti Sharma – UP Warriors

Deepti Sharma is a vital cog in the Indian national team setup as she is a reliable middle-order batter and has the requisite bowling skills to supplement and add to her contributions with the bat. The UP Warriors paid Rs 2.6 crore to get Sharma in their roster. She averages 26.11 with the bat in 88 T20Is and has multiple notable contributions lower down the order to her name.

The off-break bowler has also taken 97 wickets at an economy of 6.12, helping the Indian side plug the flow of runs and induce dismissals at timely intervals simultaneously. Sharma is the second-costliest Indian pick in the auction – even beating the likes of Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues in the race.

Jemimah Rodrigues – Delhi Capitals

Jemimah’s incredible 56* against Pakistan in the Women’s T20 World Cup came about just at the right time as franchises went absolutely berserk to get her on-board in the auction on Monday.

The batter symbolises everything synonymous with the new-age brand of women’s cricket in India – classy, stylish and full of substance. Rodrigues can be entrusted upon to be a bank with the bat, which is evident from her average of 30.72 in 66 T20I innings.

The 22-year-old induced a bidding war between Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals with the former looking keen to add the local talent to their squad. However, the Capitals managed to get Rodrigues in their side by paying Rs 2.2 crore for her.

SA-W vs NZ-W Dream11 Prediction & Fan2Play Possible 11 Pitch Report: Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Match 7 | SA-W vs NZ-W Dream11 Prediction Today | Paarl Pitch Report

Weighed down by the home advantage? It seemed to be the case for South Africa as they fell to an upset defeat to Sri Lanka on the opening night. Now, with Australia in red-hot form and Sri Lanka winning two from two, there is no room for error.

That is arguably even more so for New Zealand. Thumped at the hands of Meg Lanning’s rampant team, the White Ferns enter this match with a net run rate of -4.850. Given the competitive nature of the group thanks to the surprise element that is Sri Lanka, Sophie Devine’s team simply cannot lose.

So, which team will handle the pressure better? Both sides had hopes of achieving something special before the tournament began, so defeat here can prove devastating.

IND vs AUS 1st Test Twitter reactions: India embarrasses Australia

Cricket News: IND vs AUS 1st Test Twitter reactions: India embarrasses Australia | Reactions from IND vs AUS 1st Test

India thrashed Australia by an innings and 132 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Saturday. A dominant performance from the home side meant that the visitors were bowled out for merely 91 in the third innings courtesy a five-wicket haul by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Earlier, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja starred with five dismissals in the first Australian innings and backed it up with a 70-run knock to help India take a lead of 223 runs. There was a lot of talk about the prevalent playing conditions prior to the game but the Rohit Sharma-led side arguably demonstrated that there was enough on the track for a team that executed their plans properly.

IND vs AUS 1st Test Reactions: Home side hammer visitors at Nagpur

Here are some of the most pertinent reactions on Twitter on India’s convincing and comprehensive win in Nagpur.

Australia are battling their own set of injury concerns in this series. Key players like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood and Cameron Green missed the opening game due to their respective fitness issues. Now, Starc is likely to feature in the second game in Delhi that begins from February 17.

However, the team made headlines on the first day itself with the omission of middle-order bat Travis Head, whom many considered to be Australia’s batsman of the summer gone by. Cummins instead expressed complete confidence in the XI players that took on the field for this match.

“We were confident it was our best XI this week. We know the quality Trav is. He’s a huge part of this team but we were confident in the 11 guys out there. He’s been really good around the group. He’s been out the back working really hard on his game like he always does,” Cummins said in the aftermath of the loss, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo.
