Will cricket be part of the Olympics?

Cricket News: Will cricket be part of the Olympics? | Cricket using Commonwealth Games for Olympics springboard

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is looking to use its participation in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 as a stimulant to further push its quest of getting involved in the Olympic Games.

ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice explained that the board’s annual general meeting (AGM) was held in Birmingham in order to celebrate cricket’s return to the CWG after 24 years.

“We have declared our ambition to be involved in the Olympic Games. We are assisting the LA 2028 organisers and providing any information will help their assessment of different sports with regards to addition to the Olympic programme. But, at this stage, a decision is due next year,” Allardice was quoted in a report by ESPN Cricinfo.

Cricket in the Olympics will help grow the game

Allardice affirmed that putting cricket in multi-sport events like the CWG, Asian Games and the African Games will help for the growth of the game.

“One, it gives a lot of our member countries a seat at the top table for sporting organisations within their country. Two, the coverage of these games reaches new audiences that may not be traditional cricket audiences,” the senior executive form the ICC further opened up on this issue.

Eight teams will be participating in the women’s T20 event of the upcoming CWG in Birmingham. Barbados will be acting as a representative for West Indies whereas India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka will make up for the other seven sides. All the matches will be played at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. The event will begin from 29th July and the final will be played on 7th August.

The Commonwealth Games Federation had stated that around 90 per cent of cricket’s one billion fans reside in the Commonwealth nations.

They hence believed that the game would find resonance not only in Birmingham but also amongst several fans across the competing countries. The ICC along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) apparently lobbied actively for cricket’s inclusion in the CWG.

ICC set to announce first-ever women’s cricket FTP

Cricket News: ICC set to announce first-ever women’s cricket FTP | ICC to announce Future Tours Programme for women’s cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to unveil the first-ever women’s Future Tour Program (FTP) spanning from 2022-25.

ESPNCricinfo reports that teams will primarily engage in three-match One Day International (ODI) series as per this FTP. These series’ will be a part of the Women’s Championships that will help sides qualify for the 2025 ODI World Cup that will be held in India.

Women’s cricket FTP a huge step in the right direction for the women’s game

“The women’s FTP is going to be published. It’s the first time we have had a long-term plan around women’s series that can give broadcasters and fans a certainty about who is playing who and what time of the year,” Geoff Allardice, chief executive officer (CEO) of the ICC, was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

Allardice added, “It is structured around the ICC Women’s Championships through from 2022-25 with a lead up to the next World Cup which will be staged in India.”

Accordingly, the long-drawn demand of having a clear and persistent roadmap for women’s cricket might finally see the light of day in the coming times. Cricket boards have shied away from increasing the number and regularity of games in female cricket due to reported reluctance from the broadcaster’s end so far.

However, Allardice explained that he heard positive feedback from his interactions with some women’s cricket captains in an ICC-hosted panel discussion in Birmingham on Tuesday.

The players apparently informed him about that their schedules have become busier than before. The ICC CEO affirmed that the growth of women’s T20 leagues across the world along with these international games will bring about a very solid calendar for female cricket in the future.

Regardless of these developments, women’s Tests still continue to be an optional product. Only 10 Test matches have been played in women’s cricket since 2014 and all of them since 2017 have eventually resulted in a draw. “I can’t really see women’s Test cricket evolving at any particular speed,” ICC chairman Greg Barclay had quipped in a chat with the BBC Test Match Special recently.

Where will the World Test Championship (WTC) Final be played?

Cricket News: Where will the World Test Championship (WTC) Final be played? | ICC announces venue for WTC Finals 2023 and 2025

Lord’s will host the finals for the ongoing and next edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2023 and 2025 respectively. The International Cricket Council (ICC) made this decision in its Annual General Meeting (AGM) that concluded in Birmingham on Tuesday 26 July, 2022.

The inaugural final of the competition was initially supposed to be held in Lord’s in June 2021. However, the venue was shifted to Ageas Bowl due to the Covid-19 restrictions prevalent at that point in time.

“It’s June so that rules out a number of other venues and we’ve got to get certainty around where it’s hosted. We’re out of Covid now so subject to arrangements being made and being able to be hosted out of Lord’s I think that’s the intention,” ICC chairman Greg Barclay had told the BBC Test Match Specialsome time ago.

As of now, South Africa and Australia occupy the top-two spots in the WTC 2021-23 standings. Pakistan, India and West Indies follow the table-toppers in the rankings respectively. New Zealand won the first edition of the WTC by defeating India by eight wickets in the first finale of the competition last year.

Changes in ICC Chairperson Election Process

Moreover, the ICC has gone on to make some tweaks in the process of electing the next chairperson of the board. The polls are due to be held in November 2022 and the victor will be decided by a simple majority instead of a two-thirds one. Incumbent chairman Barclay is likely to fight for another term in office that will run from December 2022-November 2024.

Membership Update

The ICC has also received an update regarding the cricket situation in Afghanistan from its working group in addition to the representatives of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). They have put on hold the Ukraine Cricket Federation’s application for Associate membership.

The federation will have to mandatorily fulfil some clauses of the membership criteria, which includes having an appropriate administrative structure and a pathway for women’s cricket as well. Further, Uzbekistan, Cambodia and Cote D’Ivoire have been granted the associate membership status, which takes the count of the total number of members in the ICC to 10, ESPNCricinfo reports.

India, Bangladesh and England set to host Women’s World Cups

Cricket News: India, Bangladesh and England set to host Women’s World Cups | Locations set for T20 World Cups and ODI World Cup until 2027

India has won the rights to host the women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup in 2025, Cricbuzz reports. The T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026 will be held in Bangladesh and England respectively. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is set to be the host nation for the inaugural T20 Champions Trophy in 2027.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has clarified that these countries were awarded the rights on the basis of a competitive bidding process. A sub-committee comprising of Martin Snedden, Clare Connor, Ricky Skerritt and Sourav Ganguly reviewed each bid.

“Accelerating the growth of the women’s game is one of the ICC’s strategic priorities and taking these events to some of our sport’s biggest markets give us a fantastic opportunity to do that and deepen its connection with cricket’s one billion plus fans,” ICC Chairman Greg Barclay was quoted in a report by the aforementioned website.

Women’s World Cups will help accelerate the growth of the game

Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah asserted that India has the necessary infrastructure in place to deliver a successful edition of the Women’s ODI World Cup.

ECB’s interim CEO Clare Connor reminisced Heather Knight lifting the ODI World Cup for England at Lord’s in 2017. He explained that women’s cricket has developed by leaps and bounds since then with a greater number of girls taking up the sport at various professional levels.

“We’re seeing right now the positive impact that the Women’s Euros is having for football, and hosting this global cricket event will give us another incredible opportunity to inspire even more girls to pick up a bat and ball,” Connor further explained.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh will be hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the second time. The tournament was played over there back in 2014 and Australia had emerged victorious in that edition of the competition. Moreover, the women’s T20 finals will be extended to 12 teams from the current 10 from 2026 onwards.

The Women’s Champions Trophy is a new format and Sri Lanka will host the inaugural edition of the six-nation tournament in 2027. But it remains subject to their own qualification for the same. Accordingly, three of the four major women’s ICC tournaments set to be played till 2027 are likely to be hosted in the Indian sub-continent.

Will India women win the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal?

Cricket News: Will India women win the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal? | India aiming to win gold at 2022 Games

Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has expressed excitement about participating in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) as cricket returns to the international multi-nation tournament after 24 years.

The 26-year-old mentioned that the Indian squad will strive to win the gold medal in the Games that will commence in Birmingham from 28 July.

We are aiming for gold – India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana

“Really excited to be part of the Commonwealth games. I think it is something very new for me and our team. We’ve never experienced going out and playing a tournament where other sports are also involved. So, I’m definitely looking forward to it,” the southpaw was quoted in a report by CricBuzz.

“We all know the feeling because we’ve all watched the Commonwealth and Olympics, when the Indian flag goes higher and we hear the national anthem… everyone knows that feeling and definitely we are aiming for gold. I don’t think we’ll look for just a podium finish because when the flag goes higher and the national anthem plays, that’s the best feeling,” Mandhana explained to the aforementioned website.

Commonwealth Games 2022 format

Eight sides will be participating in the women’s event with the teams being segregated in two groups of four countries each.

England automatically qualified for the Games as they are hosting the upcoming edition of the CWG. The next five teams, i.e., Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan qualified on the basis of their standings in the ICC Women’s T20 Rankings.

West Indies could have taken the next spot but their place was to be determined by a regional qualifier as the team is made up of a group of nations. However, the qualifiers could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic and their spot was taken by Barbados as they were the winners of the most-recent Twenty20 Blaze that took place in 2019.

A Commonwealth Games Qualifier (CWQ) was held at the Kinrara Oval in Malaysia to select the eighth team for the tournament. Sri Lanka won that tournament undefeated and are now set to compete in Group B with the likes of England, South Africa and New Zealand.

Group A: Australia, Barbados, India, Pakistan

Group B: England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka

The top-placed team from both the groups will play against the second-placed side of the opposite group in the Semi Finals. The losers of the Semi Finals will contest each other in the third-place playoff for the bronze medal.

The final will be conducted on 7th August. India’s campaign will begin against Australia on 29th July.

Cricket last featured in the CWG as a 16-team men’s tournament in Malaysia back in 1998. South Africa, Australia and New Zealand had clinched the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. Women’s cricket will continue to feature in CWG 2026 that will be conducted in Victoria in Australia.

Context is a big talking point in white-ball cricket these days, particularly in the aftermath of Ben Stokes’ retirement from ODIs. T20 Internationals are often a point of discussion, but with a T20 World Cup around the corner, there is always a sense of importance about these matches with the aim to gain important form and confidence.

England and South Africa have played some thrilling T20Is over the years. In early 2020, the two teams played memorable contests, with the Proteas winning by one run followed by England’s two-run win two days later.

Later that year, England swept South Africa 3-0 in a series behind closed doors. There will be no quiet atmosphere this time around as England need to arrest a slide in white-ball cricket and the Proteas look to rediscover their excellent form from 2021. With both teams possessing great firepower – most notably in the two captains – we could be in for thrilling T20 cricket.

ENG vs SA 1st T20 Possible Playing 11

Jonny Bairstow is expected to play despite having swelling in his knee in the lead up to this match. Also, England might have to choose one between Phil Salt and Harry Brook, as well as Sam Curran and David Willey. Ben Stokes is rested.

Life after Kyle Coetzer officially begins for Scotland. The former captain recently announced his retirement from T20Is, passing the baton on after an excellent career leading Scotland to bigger and better things on the field.

However, there is quite a big distraction hanging over the heads of everyone in Scotland cricket. A shocking indepndent report revealed Cricket Scotland to be institutionally racist, with 448 examples of racism found in the Changing the Boundaries report by Plan4Sport.

Indeed, what promised to be a nice occasion with the visit of an established Full Member nation is bathed in institutional turmoil. Now, the players will need to put all that aside and deliver against New Zealand, as the series serves as fantastic preparation for T20 World Cup later this year.

The Black Caps come into the series off the back of an efficient 3-0 series win in Ireland. Glenn Phillips was particularly brilliant, but contributions throughout the lineup would have been most pleasing, and they will be aiming for more of the same.

SCO vs NZ 1st T20 Possible Playing 11

Scotland: 1. George Munsey, 2. Ollie Hairs, 3. Matthew Cross (wk), 4. Richie Berrington (c), 5. Calum MacLeod, 6. Michael Leask, 7. Chris Greaves, 8. Gavin Main, 9. Mark Watt, 10. Safyaan Sharif, 11. Alasdair Evans

New Zealand: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Finn Allen, 3. Dane Cleaver (wk), 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Daryl Mitchell, 6. James Neesham, 7. Michael Bracewell, 8. Mitchell Santner (c), 9. Ish Sodhi, 10. Lockie Ferguson, 11. Blair Tickner/Jacob Duffy

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Scotland:

  • George Munsey is the only Scotland player to strike at over 140 in T20Is (146.31). In nine T20s at Grange Cricket Club, Munsey has struck 192 runs at an average of 24.00 and strike rate of 148.84.
  • Richie Berrington has the most runs of any player in T20s on this ground. The new skipper has struck 251 runs in eight innings at an average of 41.83 and strike rate of 121.84. This includes four 30+ scores.
  • However, Berrington comes into this series in poor form in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 tournament. After his 107* vs USA in late May, Berrington made scores of 13, 15, 1, 3, 0 and 4*.
  • Calum MacLeod has a key role to play as an experienced member of the Scotland team. He has just one 30+ score in nine T20s on this ground (overall average of 21.00), so how he fares here will be interesting to see.
  • All-rounder Michael Leask struck a brilliant 42* off 20 balls against New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Also, Leask has the most wickets (13) at Grange Cricket Club at an impressive average of 15.08 and economy of 6.53.
  • Alasdair Evans also has 13 scalps in nine matches on this ground (avg. 20.08, econ. 7.25).
  • Safyaan Sharif took 2/28 vs New Zealand in last year’s World Cup, which included the dismissal of Daryl Mitchell.

New Zealand:

  • Martin Guptill struck 93 off 56 balls against Scotland back in November 2021. What made the knock so impressive is that it was played during the day in hot Dubai.
  • Guptill scored 15 off 8 against Sharif, 38 off 16 against Evans and 19 off 12 against Greaves that day.
  • Glenn Phillips produced two man of the match performances in the recent three-match series vs Ireland. Overall, he struck 148 runs at an average of 148 and strike rate of 132.14.
  • James Neesham smashed 53 runs in the Ireland series at a strike rate of 220.83. The all-rounder also took two wickets.
  • Lockie Ferguson was in fine form in Ireland. The pacer took five wickets in two matches at an economy of 4.50.
  • Ish Sodhi dismissed Munsey and Berrington in a spell of 2/42 against Scotland in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The legspinner had a good series against Ireland, where he took six scalps in three T20Is.

Other Stats and Facts

  • This will be third T20I between Scotland and New Zealand. The Black Caps won the other two meetings (in 2009 and 2021).
  • This will be the first time the two teams meet in a T20I outside a World Cup.
  • Daryl Mitchell found his mojo in the last T20I against Ireland with a 32-ball 48.
  • Gavin Main comes into this series in good form. He took eight wickets in his last three ODIs and also scored 64* vs Nepal.

Grange Cricket Club Edinburgh Pitch Report and Weather

Scotland and Zimbabwe played out three competitive T20Is on this ground in September 2021. The average first innings score in that series was 151.33, with the team batting first winning two of the three matches.

A partly cloudy day is forecast with a top of about 19 degrees celsius. No rain is forecast.

Cricket News: Which broadcaster will host Australian cricket in India? | Which broadcaster will show Australia matches in India?

Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that Disney Star has bagged the media rights to broadcast Australian cricket throughout India and other Asian territories.

The seven-year agreement will begin from 2023 onwards as Star will televise the international games played in Australia along with the men’s and women’s versions of the Big Bash League (BBL). Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) are the present right holders of the same.

Star the host broadcaster for Australia matches in India after bagging the IPL rights

Star’s recent victory of the TV broadcast rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) sparked hopes within the CA that it will bring about extensive cross-promotion of the BBL.

Nick Hockley, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CA, expressed that Disney Star is synonymous with cricket in India. He gleefully talked about the excitement of working with the broadcaster to ‘showcase the outstanding cricket played in Australia every summer’.

“The magnitude of this association is testament to the enduring rivalry and respect that exists between Australian and Indian teams, the excitement and popularity of WBBL and BBL, and the high regard of Australian cricket in India and global markets more broadly,” Hockley was quoted in a report by CricBuzz.

He added, “There was significant interest in our rights and we are very grateful to our current rights holder Sony for their partnership which will continue throughout this season.”

On the other hand, Disney Star will be delighted at securing these rights as they lost out to the Reliance Industries-backed Viacom 18 in the digital broadcasting race for the upcoming cycle of the IPL in the media rights auction last month.

“Disney Star has been delighting millions of Indian fans by showcasing marquee cricket across our linear and digital platforms,” Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star, was quoted in an official report by the CA.

Gupta added, “Some of the most memorable moments for Indian fans have been produced in Australia and we look forward to elevating many more such moments with our unique brand of story-telling, programming, local activations and tech-enabled experiences in association with Cricket Australia.”

Meanwhile, CA is embroiled in a legal tussle with its home broadcaster Channel Seven back in Australia. The free-to-air television network kicked off a course case against the CA whilst citing several breaches in their agreement.

Tim David can win Australia another World Cup – Ponting

Cricket News: Tim David can win Australia another World Cup – Ponting | Ricky Ponting says Australia should pick Tim David

Australia legend Ricky Ponting says the defending T20 World Cup champions should pick Tim David for this year’s tournament. The former captain, now commentator and Head of Strategy at Hobart Hurricanes, believes David is the kind of player that can get Australia over the line in their title defence.

While Australia did win last year without David, a number of teams will be aiming for improved displays down under in October. So, Australia need to look to improve themselves, and Ponting believes the big hitter could be the final piece of the puzzle.

“If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team,” Ponting said. “If he’s playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he’s an out and out match-winner.

Tim David can be like the Andrew Symonds of 2003 – Ricky Ponting

Ponting compared David’s hitting to the late Andrew Symonds, who tragically passed away earlier this year. Specifically, the former captain looked back on Symonds’ incredible 2003 World Cup campaign – a tournament that Symonds came into under lots of pressure but had Ponting’s backing.

“He’s [David] the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He’s not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad,” Ponting said.

“I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like an Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup. You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity they’re a chance of winning a tournament for you. That’s how I’d be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim’s over the last two years.”

David should have played more in IPL 2022 – Ponting

Tim David has been terrific in T20s around the globe, including the IPL where he delivered spectacular performances. Mumbai Indians dropped him after just two matches, but he then showed what he is capable of.

“He’s been incredible in almost every tournament that he’s played around the world, the last 12 or 18 months,” Ponting said. “He was probably a little bit unlucky not to play more in the IPL this year to be honest, with the way that he started with Mumbai and then didn’t come back until right near the end and played some match-winning knocks then.”

For Australia, they have the task of fitting him into the XI. The likes of Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade have previously spoken highly of David, but where he slots in is cause for debate.

On paper, Steve Smith’s place looks most under threat. Smith, before the Sri Lanka series earlier this year, was told to shed the ‘anchor’ tag and play with total freedom. However, Australia will need to make a call as to who could play that role better in a big tournament – Smith or David.

The 2022 men’s T20 World Cup will kick off on October 16 as Sri Lanka take on Namibia. Australia’s first match will be against New Zealand on October 22 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
