Matthew Hayden rips into CA & Justin Langer critics

Cricket News: Matthew Hayden rips into CA & Justin Langer critics | Matthew Hayden launches attack on Cricket Australia & Langer critics

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has launched a passionate defence of his best friend and former opening partner Justin Langer.

Langer, who is under pressure according to reports due to a string of poor results this year, received a vote of confidence this week by Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Nick Hockley. Hockley stood firm, pointing to Langer’s efforts ‘in raising the culture, values and behaviours’ of the Australian cricket team since he took the job in difficult circumstances back in 2018.

However, Hayden took aim at CA claiming they are focusing too much on Langer rather than the performances of the players. Speaking to SEN’s The Sporting Capital, Hayden said, “CEO of Cricket Australia carefully listen to the fact that (Langer) has got character personified. He is a man that has to leave his wife and four beautiful kids and go off to work and listen to some of the rubbish that’s getting spoken.”

“Even this facetious discussion among senior players just last night; about them deciding Justin Langer’s future. What about meeting about the fact you’re No.3 in Test cricket and No.3 in ODI rankings, and No.6 in T20 rankings?

“Waste more energy and time thinking about that, than discussing a bloke who’s a legend of the game and so passionate about Australian cricket and culture. He’s worth listening to and I’m very disappointed.

Matthew Hayden defends Langer, calls out critics and writer Malcolm Conn

Hayden, in his defence of Langer, pointed to how the Australian coach helped turn the culture around after the ball tampering scandal in Cape Town.

“Our break in the cycle was when our national team was caught and shamed, and in came Langer who now, with a very long memory to that occasion, has turned that culture around,” said Hayden.

“The game’s come a long way since Langer took over because he has reinvigorated that sense of playing for the baggy green.”

Cricket News: Matthew Hayden spoke of the role Langer has played since the ball tampering scandal.

Hayden took particular offence to an article written in The Sydney Morning Herald by cricket writer Malcolm Conn. In the article, Conn wrote of his experience working with Justin Langer as the Australia men’s media team manager in 2019. He recalls the difficulty of working with the Australian coach, and how Langer can make a big fuss of even the smallest issues.

In the article, it is written, “players are being worn down by the volatile, high-stress environment he inhabits as coach, and his folksy, clichéd motivational homilies.”

“As one player told the Herald and The Age: ‘It becomes draining and affects everything.'”

Hayden labelled this as disrespectful and frustrating.

“It’s really frustrating me this – one of the guys in particular that I’m very disappointed with is (cricket writer) Malcolm Conn,” said Hayden.

“From the inner sanctum of the dressing room, he shot holes in Langer’s character in his article two days ago. That was when he was employed by Cricket Australia, and from the inner sanctum. This is a bloke that sang the team song.

“If he is listening out there, Malcolm and I have punched on over the years and we’ve had a fantastic working relationship – but I have to say that this ‘loose lips sinks ships’ kind of mentality is really frustrating.

“A lot of the content coming out about this is downright disrespectful to a bloke that’s played over 100 Test matches.”

Can’t judge Langer with key stars out – Hayden

Australia were embarrassed across 10 T20Is in West Indies and Bangladesh. The latest performance was a 62 all-out horror show – Australia’s lowest-ever score in T20Is.

However, Hayden questioned the culture at the top as to how Australia isn’t building more depth. Also, he pointed to how seven of Australia’s 15-man World Cup squad weren’t even available on those tours, which makes judging Langer on these results quite harsh.

“I beg the same question to our current CEO who is now from the ivory tower making claims about how the IPL is going to be fantastic preparation for the T20 World Cup – which we are ranked sixth in the world, just above Bangladesh who hammered us. He has to be accountable to where he needs to be and where his players need to be,” said Hayden.

“When they choose the World Cup squad and seven of those players aren’t on the current tour, and we’re judging Justin Langer on the performance of the team. But if you haven’t got seven assets to your team, any organisation crumbles.

“In 2005, we didn’t have Glenn McGrath for The Ashes and we lost that series heavily.”

Babar Azam and selector in disagreement over Shoaib Malik

Cricket News: Babar Azam and selector in disagreement over Shoaib Malik | Pakistan captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Wasim disagree over Shoaib Malik

According to reports out of Pakistan, skipper Babar Azam and chief selector Mohammad Wasim are in disagreement regarding the inclusion of Shoaib Malik in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Babar is reportedly keen to have Malik’s services in the 11 as a result of Pakistan’s middle order struggles in recent times. Wasim believes that Malik won’t benefit the team due to his age (39). However, there is a bit of conjecture around Wasim’s stance due to the fact that he has selected older players in the squad before, including 40-year old Mohammad Hafeez who played in Pakistan’s recent 1-0 series victory over West Indies.

Babar Azam keen to have Shoaib Malik to help Pakistan’s middle order woes

In 14 T20Is this year, only Fakhar Zaman has scored a half-century outside of the Babar Azam-Mohammad Rizwan duo. If Babar and Rizwan don’t quite fire, concerns rise further about Pakistan’s ability to post or chase down competitive totals.

Pakistan is undoubtedly a threat to the T20 World Cup title if they get things right. Shoaib Malik remains a key contributor in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he struck 351 runs in 13 matches in 2021 at a strike rate nearing 150. Plus, he struck 240 runs in seven innings in the recent Kashmir Premier League (KPL), certainly prompting skipper Babar Azam to call for his services.

Pakistan recently lost a T20I series 2-1 in England before beating West Indies 1-0 in a rain-affected series. Their bowling attack, especially in the UAE, has the potential to cause teams trouble. However, much still depends on Babar and Rizwan to provide great starts, with an inconsistent and unreliable middle order at hand.

If Pakistan can sort this, they will be mighty tough to beat.

Why Virat Kohli, the captain, deserves great praise

Why Virat Kohli, the captain, deserves great praise | Why India captain Virat Kohli deserves praise for India’s Test rise

As Mohammed Siraj bowled James Anderson with just about eight overs to go on the final day, Indian skipper Virat Kohli ran around in ecstasy at Lord’s, better defined by the Englishmen as the ‘Home of Cricket’.

This was the second time that the Indian team had breached the most iconic cricket ground in Britain, and they had done it not only in style but some sheer substance.

One cannot say that India thoroughly dominated this contest and claimed the bragging rights eventually. Instead, they were down and out to an extent on the fourth day, but yet never lost hope and showed tremendous grit and resilience to claw their way back into this contest.

A team synonymous to Virat Kohli, the captain

In some ways, these are characteristics synonymous to captain Kohli as well. And these are traits that have been associated with him right from the beginning of his career.

Kohli was, perhaps in his own admission, never the most talented of batsmen to begin with. However, he managed to scale up the ladder and reach the top of world cricket through the incredible spirit, character and perseverance that he developed gradually over the course of his career.

Similarly, he took over the reins of this Test team in uncomfortable circumstances in the middle of another series defeat in Australia.

Seven years later, he has helped transform the side into a world-beater; a consistent performer in both home and away conditions. More importantly, he has built a unit that manages to put in collective performances and does not rely on individual brilliance to achieve great feats.

Cricket News: Why Virat Kohli, the captain, deserves great praise | Why India captain Virat Kohli deserves praise for India's Test rise
Virat Kohli is going through a century drought, but he is not letting that impact his captaincy.

Just fathom this; followers of the game in India really go hard on criticism even in the slightest of slipups committed by the Indian side in foreign conditions. That’s the level of expectations that one harbours from this unit in the current times. It is a significant leap from the back the times when the team toured abroad and returned back satisfied having noted a single odd victory sometimes.

Kohli plays a key role in building a strong pace unit

And, undoubtedly, a large chunk of this credit should be laden upon Kohli’s work towards putting together a top-notch, arguably amongst the best ever pace batteries seen in world cricket.

He along with the senior leaders and management have overseen the introduction of blue-eyed boys like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, the revival of Ishant Sharma and immense improvement of Mohammed Shami. Umesh Yadav has become a bankable gun for testing conditions in India whereas Shardul Thakur has propped up as an unexpected game-changer with both bat and ball.

The mere fact that India could produce such a lethal pace attack was improbable until some time ago. That’s an indisputable legacy that Kohli has created, step by step. It began with our fast bowlers excelling first at home and then proving their worth in every single difficult overseas condition.

Cricket News: Why Virat Kohli, the captain, deserves great praise | Why India captain Virat Kohli deserves praise for India's Test rise
Mohammed Siraj has been a breath of fresh air and is thriving under Virat Kohli the captain.

Virat Kohli has helped drive a culture of better fitness

Another remarkable contribution from the skipper’s end has been towards a holistic development and growth of the fitness culture in the team. The seeds for this were sown in the captaincy of MS Dhoni in the previous tenure. But one can argue that Kohli’s time has seen the rounding up of a large transition that allowed him to develop a pipeline of players who would rank amongst the fittest athletes in the sport worldwide.

The Indian cricket team’s schedule is currently jam-packed like never before. And there are certain players who are certainties in the XI regardless of the format. Add to that the important IPL commitments and it ensures that the players remain at the peak of their physical well-being throughout the course of the year, over and again.

Gone are the times when mainstay Indian cricketers had to pull out of important tours owing to unexpected injuries. This squad has formidable stars raring to go all guns blazing consistently. If one falls, they prop up with another equally proficient individual. This has created a culture of healthy competition, keeping the players on their toe as there is always a replacement in place for the under-performing ones.

Simultaneously, Kohli has done well to back his trusted lieutenants throughout their thick and thins, barring some exceptions.

Over the years, the captain has repeatedly stressed upon the key role that the duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara play in the Test setup. The way these two players weathered the storm on the fourth day of the Lord’s Test was a thing for the ages in the red-ball game. When the Indian team’s back was against the wall, they stood up and demonstrated incredible grit and patience to ensure that the team gradually climbs its way into the game.

More importantly, they have done this on multiple occasions over the years and have rightly earned the skipper’s recognition and respect for the same.

Another interesting facet was the timely introduction of senior pro Rohit Sharma into the Test XI. Over time, it became imminent that Sharma had become too good a player to be left out of squad of any format of the game. Kohli tackled that opportunity by slotting Sharma in the opener’s slot, a role in which he has excelled in white-ball cricket since 2013.

The way the seasoned statesman has responded to the challenge and owned his position is another classic tale of the right captaincy call at the right time; also, a testament to Sharma’s own class as a batsman, something that seems to have improved by leaps and bounds with experience.

Johannesburg, Trent Bridge, Adelaide, Melbourne, Lord’s. These are big victories, absolutely big if looked in the backdrop that India never collected these many victories in overseas conditions so consistently in the past. And to think of the fact that there are more such wins to come in the following years…it’s a facet of Virat Kohli’s career that will live on long after he hangs he boots as well.

Deservedly so!

Australia announce T20 World Cup squad

Cricket News: Australia announce T20 World Cup squad | Australia announces their T20 World Cup squad with key inclusions and omissions

Australia has made some big calls in selecting their T20 World Cup squad. Josh Inglis, the talented and uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman, has earned his first international call-up in Australia’s 15-man squad for the showpiece tournament.

Inglis makes the squad on the back of a terrific Vitality Blast campaign with Leicestershire. The keeper-batsman smashed 531 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of nearly 176. He replaces Alex Carey and Josh Philippe, who have both been dropped, as the backup wicket-keeper option to Matthew Wade.

National selector chair George Bailey was full of praise for Josh Inglis. “Josh has been on our radar for some time with his performances in white ball cricket and more recently in the Vitality Blast where he topped the run charts,” said Bailey.

“He offers the squad flexibility in the batting order with his adaptability, counterattacking ability and power striking. He is a player we are excited about for the future,” Bailey continued.

Australia T20 World Cup squad

Australia’s stars, who were missing in the tough tours of West Indies and Bangladesh, have been named. Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner and Steve Smith are part of the 15-man contingent, as is Aaron Finch who is confident of recovering in time for Australia’s quest to win the T20 World Cup for the first time ever.

Carey, Philippe, along with with Moises Henriques, Ashton Turner and Andrew Tye have been left out after Australia slumped to terrible defeats in West Indies and Bangladesh, including a 62-all out horror show in the final T20I in Dhaka.

Nathan Ellis, who took a hat-trick on T20I debut in Bangladesh, along with Dan Christian and Daniel Sams, have been named as travelling reserves.

Australia’s squad: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins (vc), Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa. Travelling reserves: Dan Christian, Nathan Ellis, Daniel Sams

Joe Root moves into 2nd spot in ICC Test batting rankings

Cricket News: Joe Root moves into 2nd spot in ICC Test batting rankings | England captain Joe Root moves up to 2nd place in Test batting rankings

England captain Joe Root has overtaken Australian duo Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to move into second spot in the ICC batting rankings. Only New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is ahead of Root, and given the magnificent form the England skipper is in, one feels he may top the rankings soon.

Root has been outstanding in 2021. He has amassed 1,277 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 67.21, including an unbelievable five centuries out of six 50+ scores. His latest was a masterful 180* at Lord’s, which wasn’t quite enough to lead England to victory as India produced a near-perfect fifth day to seal the Test.

Joe Root up to 2nd in the ICC Test batting rankings

Root has risen two places to second in the batting rankings. Two Tests ago, Root was in fifth place, but two glorious centuries has catapulted him ahead of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Virat Kohli.

Incredibly, Root has scored more runs in this series to date (386) than England’s second-highest run-scorer in 2021 (Rory Burns with 363). If he continues his form, he will move to top spot in the rankings for the first time since August 2015 after helping England regain the Ashes. Given he is only eight points behind Kane Williamson, first place seems an inevitability.

Also, Root will be hoping to continue his form to help England get back into the series against India. Given the fragility of the England lineup and sheer reliance on the England captain, one feels that more big scores are a necessity if the home side is to have any hope of winning the series.

As he aims to continue his fine batting form, Root will also look to make up for a poor fifth day as captain. He and England let things slip badly on a “bizarre”, “poor” and “horrible” fifth morning of Test cricket, characterised by questionable tactics against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

Fan2Play vs Dream11: What’s the difference? | Comparison between Fan2Play and Dream11 – What is the difference between the two?

Fantasy cricket players are always on the mission to win. And rightly so, as fantasy cricket is a very popular way to try make some money thanks to strong cricketing knowledge.

However, with popularity comes great competition. Platforms such as Dream11 have millions of players participating, which can make winning on a regular basis quite challenging.

As a result, other platforms have come onto the scene to provide users with opportunities to play and win. One such provider is Fan2Play, which is an innovative and out-of-the-box version of fantasy cricket.

In this article, we will compare Fan2Play with Dream11, and discuss the key differences between the two.

Dream11 is exactly that. You create a team of 11 players based on strong research and insight in the attempt of winning in any particular contest.

With Fan2Play, there is a bit of a twist. The platform provides classic 11-player fantasy, but it also offers a number of “challenges” where you can compete against other fantasy players with 2, 3 or 4-player fantasy teams making it India’s quickest fantasy game.

For example, in a 2-player challenge, instead of creating an 11-player team, you can pick the two players who you think will perform best in the match.

Key features:

  • There is no credit limit in a 2/3/4 player challenge. Simply pick the players who you think will perform best.
  • Challenges are 1v1, and you can decide the challenge amount. As a result, your chances of winning on Fan2Play are up to 50% higher compared to other platforms.

Aaron Finch and Steve Smith on track for T20 World Cup

Cricket News: Aaron Finch and Steve Smith on track for T20 World Cup | Star batsmen Finch and Smith expected to be fit for T20 World Cup

Australia’s star batsmen Aaron Finch and Steve Smith are on track to be fit for the T20 World Cup. Both are feeling quite positive in their recovery from respective injuries, with focus on trying to deliver Australia’s first T20 World Cup title in a couple of months’ time.

Smith, who is recovering from an elbow injury, said last month he would prioritise the Ashes if forced to make a choice. However, he is tracking well according to skipper Aaron Finch due to the fact he isn’t overworking his elbow in batting practice. Also, Smith is reportedly set to make a return via next month’s IPL.

Finch is undergoing rehab after recent knee surgery. The Australian captain felt niggling pain in pre-season camp in Brisbane, before getting worse during the tour of West Indies. He had surgery almost immediately after completing two-week quarantine in Melbourne, which gives him the opportunity to be fit right before the showpiece tournament.

Despite the 10-week recovery timeframe and his wife due to give birth to their first child just before the World Cup, Finch is optimistic that his experience will serve him well in the UAE.

Aaron Finch and Steve Smith on track to feature in T20 World Cup

Australia are set to name their squad for the tournament in the coming days. Finch is confident of being available and making an impact.

“I’m confident of that (being fit for the World Cup),” said the Australian captain.

“It will be come down to pretty minimal match practice which I think being older and being around for quite a while plays into my hands a bit, having (previously recovered from) some injuries where you don’t have a lot of lead time into a series.

“I think that will help me. The surgery went as well as it could have and I’m walking around with no pain, which is the most important thing at this stage.”

The skipper also touched on Steve Smith’s fitness. Just as he was optimistic about his situation, he was also optimistic about Smith’s recovery from the elbow problem.

“It seems to be going really well. I know that he’s been building up his batting time over the last couple of weeks – I know that would have been difficult to have a time limit on his net times,” Finch said on Wednesday in his interview with cricket.com.au.

“He’s going really well”, Finch continued. “The last time I spoke to him he wasn’t having any pain batting so that was a real positive. He’s going to be such an important part of our campaign.”

Australia have lost 5 straight T20I series

Australia will certainly be hoping Finch and Smith are available to shore up the batting. The Aussies lost 8-2 across recent tours of West Indies and Bangladesh, which included their lowest-ever T20I score of 62 in the fifth and final T20I against the Tigers.

Australia have lost their last five T20I series, with significant concerns about the batting depth. The addition of Finch and Smith gives Australia a much better chance of competing for the T20 World Cup trophy.

60% capacity likely in IPL 2021 phase 2 – reports

Cricket News: 60% capacity in IPL 2021 phase 2 – reports | Times of India reports that stadiums will be filled to 60% capacity in the UAE

The second stage of IPL 2021, which is set to begin on September 19 in the UAE with a showpiece fixture between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, is likely to host crowds.

If it does indeed go ahead, it will be the first time that crowds will be present at an IPL tournament since 2019. IPL 2020, won by Mumbai Indians and also hosted in the UAE, went ahead behind closed doors. The first half of IPL 2021 was also conducted behind closed doors but was soon postponed due to the COVID-19 situation in India.

Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) keen to host fans in stadiums for IPL 2021 phase 2

According to reports, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) are working with the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) and the UAE government to host matches at 60% capacity. Gulf News reported that ECB secretary Mubashir Usmani is working at gaining consent via protocols to ensure a safe environment for fans and players in these times of the pandemic.

“As hosts, ECB will work closely with the authorities to seek approval on what protocols need to be followed. This includes fan attendance. We will then discuss it with the BCCI as well as the ICC to assess their spectator requirements. We want our expat and Emirati sports-loving fans in the UAE to be able to watch the action from the stands,” said Usmani.

The remaining 31 matches of IPL 2021 will be played across the span of 27 days, with the final to take place on October 15. Soon after the IPL, the T20 World Cup will also take place in the UAE. With plenty of cricket to be played at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, it will be interesting to see how the pitches will play in the showpiece international tournament.

Ranked: Top 5 players from 2nd England vs India Test

Cricket News: Ranked: Top 5 players from 2nd England vs India Test | Ranking the top 5 players from ENG vs IND Lord’s Test

Lord’s, the Home of Cricket, was gatecrashed by a superb Indian team. The test was perfectly set up from an Indian perspective with the Day 1 partnership between KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma after being sent in with Kohli (as usual) losing the toss. Rahul again showcased his second-coming as a Test cricketer and has certainly sealed that spot along with Shara for the near future.

But what ensued on the third evening and what followed it was something that surprised fans and the cricketing world. After a barrage of bouncers by Jasprit Bumrah aimed at England’s number 11 James Anderson, there were some words exchanged as the players walked off the field. Much was said on social media about the tactic used by India to a number 11, but hey, it is Test match cricket.

On day four, everyone knew the tempers were high and both teams were on edge from the get-go. England struck early with wickets of Rahul, Sharma and Kohli to leave India reeling at 55/3. Fortunately for India, the under-pressure Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship and put on a vital 100-run partnership before falling to Wood and Ali respectively.

The crucial Rishabh Pant showed little resistance on day five, but the real and unexpected blow to England came via Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. At the end of day four, and after Pant’s dismissal, England looked all set to clean India’s tail quickly. But, Shami and Bumrah had other plans.

As soon as they walked out, something switched for the England bowlers and their bizarre fielding and bowling tactics left a lot to be desired. In the end, Shami went on to score a 50 supported by Bumrah (34*) and India set a target of 272 in 60 overs for England. The stage was set on the last day and Indian bowlers reaped the rewards of putting in the efforts on a slow day five pitch and snapped a victory from what looked like a sure defeat 24 hours earlier.

Top 5 players from 2nd England vs India Test at Lord’s

5. Cheteshwar Pujara/Ajinkya Rahane

Two out-of-form batters who were potentially playing for their spots in the team. Pujara and Rahane certainly showed that class always shines through. That brilliant 100-run stand for the fourth wicket, before Pujara succumbed to an unplayable delivery from Wood, paved the way for India to post a respectable and almost unachievable target on day five. Only time will tell whether this innings will do any good for their confidence in the next few innings, but Indian fans will be mighty pleased with their effort.

4. Mohammed Shami/Jasprit Bumrah

This was definitely the match-changing partnership for India. Coupled with their bowling prowess, Bumrah and Shami did not let the English batters breathe at all, nor did they let the English bowlers breathe with a partnership that included some Pollard-esque shots but also some Pujara-esque defence.

Shami got a 50 – his second in Tests – while Bumrah supported him from the other end with a well-made 34. But it was Bumrah’s slower ball to Robinson that will be etched in the memory of the cricket fans for a long time. Magnificent performances.

3. Mohammed Siraj

India have found a new gem in the fast bowling department. In only his seventh Test match, the fire Siraj showed throughout the Test match and his career to date adds so much quality to the already power-packed bowling lineup.

He can bowl the one that jags back and also the one that just nips away. He grabbed an 8-for in the Test, but most importantly, he was always steaming in no matter what time of the day it was. Siraj has certainly shown the world what he is capable of.

2. Joe Root

The only reason Joe Root isn’t ranked first is due to his captaincy flaws on the fifth day. If it wasn’t for his brilliant batting, England would have lost the Test on day four itself. He paved the way for a perfect day five finish with a sublime 180 in the first innings with some support from Bairstow (57). It was due to that partnership that England ended achieved a lead. Joe Root is in sublime form this year and India need to find a way to get rid of him early.

1. KL Rahul

Carrying on his form from the first Test, Rahul got his name on the Lord’s honours board with a masterful 129 on day one in tough batting conditions. His 126-run partnership with Rohit Sharma at the top gave India a platform and helped them put a respectable total on the board. All Indian fans would be backing KL Rahul to maintain his current run of form in the next three Tests.

England slammed for “poor”, “bizarre” tactics

Cricket News: England slammed for “poor”, “bizarre” tactics | Spotlight on England and Joe Root after poor tactics against Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami

When England dismissed key man Rishabh Pant early on day five, the home side became clear favourites to take out a fascinating Lord’s Test match.

However, England saw their chances evaporate within 40 minutes, courtesy of having mistaken Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah for prime Vivian Richards and Sachin Tendulkar. One-dimensional bowling, questionable field placements and a poor overall mindset gave India a massive boost, as they went on to win the match by 151 runs.

No one could have believed that India would win by such a margin given Pant was dismissed with the lead standing at 167. England then fell into the trap of returning serve to Bumrah in particular, after the India fast bowler peppered James Anderson with bouncers on the third evening.

The overuse of the bouncer, in conjunction with up to six fielders in boundary-saving positions, allowed Bumrah and Shami to rotate strike with ease. With every passing run, England’s chances of victory diminished further, which was a major waste given the position they were in thanks to Joe Root’s fine hundred and excellent bowling before the Bumrah-Shami stand.

England captain Joe Root takes responsibility

When questioned in the post-match presentation, skipper Joe Root said, “A lot on my shoulders, as captain you take responsibility, tactically we could have done things differently – we went from a position where we could win to being behind.”

England were shellshocked by the time it was their turn to bat. They had worked so hard to put the game in their grasp, but they let go of that advantage in almost an instant. Both England openers were out for a duck for the first time ever in a home Test, and the home side was always playing catch up.

India, in such a pumped up mood, are hard to stop. And England had no answers.

Fans, pundits slam England tactics

The likes of Michael Vaughan and Geoffrey Boycott led the chorus of discontent among England fans, as the Indian supporters lapped it up. Shane Warne described the tactics as “horrible.”

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, though capable, have not scored runs on a consistent basis at Test level. In fact, India’s tail was seen as a major point of concern ahead of this series. So, for England to show so much respect with numerous fielders out on the boundary was quite the scene.
