Over the last 10 years, ODIs have often been met with the word ‘context’. That word fully applies to this upcoming match, held in a city (Chennai) that experiences plenty of rain in December.

Despite an extra two T20Is providing more value given a World T20 is less than a year away, this is a chance for certain players to make a mark. The likes of KL Rahul for India and Hayden Walsh for West Indies will be keen to stake their claims for regular berths in their respective ODI teams.

Key Players to Watch/Stats

Virat Kohli is the fan’s dream. He gives plenty to talk about, particularly vs West Indies. He has amassed 2146 runs in just 35 innings, with 870 in his last nine knocks at 174.
Mohammed Shami has 32 wickets in 15 matches vs West Indies, at an average of 21.00. Also, India would be tempted to pick Ravindra Jadeja given his familiarity with Chennai, plus given he has 38 wickets in 26 matches vs Windies.
Rohit Sharma has 12 50+ scores vs West Indies, but has surprisingly converted just two to centuries. Also, he has scored just 74 runs in five ODIs at Chennai.
Shai Hope is averaging 60.54 in ODIs in the past two years. Against India, he has 471 runs in 14 matches at 42.81.
Shimron Hetmyer starred in India last year, scoring 106, 94, 37, 13 and 9 in the ODI series.
There is a case for India to play Kuldeep Yadav, who has 21 wickets in 12 matches vs West Indies.

Key to an India win

Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the series. So, the in-and-out KL Rahul gets a chance to impress at the top, just as he did in the recent T20I series. With Virat Kohli an imperious figure against West Indies, a strong start from the openers can spell trouble for the Windies.

Also, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who requires consistent cricket, is out with another injurt setback. Shardul Thakur has been brought into the squad, but with the Chepauk track often suiting spinners, a good approach from India might be to choke the Windies’ scoring with finger and wrist spin.

Can West Indies get the better of Virat Kohli and his fellow top three counterparts? To stand a significant chance, the Windies need to get into India’s middle order as early as possible, which places the onus on the powerplay bowlers to build pressure and take wickets.

Also, how will West Indies’ naturally attacking batsmen fare against India? Shai Hope has proven to be a foil, given his old-fashioned batting of late, so who can provide the adequate support to ensure the score and partnerships keep building? Will the exciting middle order flourish or flounder?

Pitch and Conditions

There has been a lot of rain in Chennai in the lead up to the match, meaning the ground has been covered for significant periods. The forecast for match day should hopefully allow for a full match, with the spinners tipped to make an impact.

The MI vs CSK rivalry is one of the most incredible rivalries in cricket. The IPL 2019 Final was just another chapter in the amazing book that is MI vs CSK, and you can bet there are many more amazing chapters to come.

But, here we are not talking about any match in particular. Hotstar has revealed the views on their platform for every IPL team’s matches during last season. Like in the IPL 2019 Final, Mumbai Indians have edged the Chennai Super Kings again, by the smallest of margins.

MI vs CSK views

Mumbai Indians’ matches got a total of 138.2 million views, edging CSK who got 138.1 million views. They were followed by Delhi Capitals and the Kings from Punjab.

Chennai was on top of the views list in 2018.

RCB was surprisingly on the bottom of the list, considering their fan base. But they might be watching more on their TV sets compared to mobile phones.

Mumbai got a decent increase compared to the 2018 season. CSK is having consistent views on their matches. DC and KXIP have also gained viewership compared to 2018 with SRH and KKR going down on the list.

Although Mumbai gains the top spot in overall views, CSK still has the most number of views by the female audience, which is fantastic to see.

West Indies are ranked 10th at the ICC World T20 rankings. They have an overall winning percentage of just 46.05%. But, they are the most successful team in T20 World Cups, winning two out of six tournaments. In fact, they are the only team to win the T20 World Cup twice (2012 and 2016).

So, what is it about the Windies when it comes to T20 tournaments? Here, we look at a few deciding factors that have helped them to achieve this feat:

Experience

The Windies players are very experienced in T20s. No T20 league is successful without them (including the IPL and BBL). They play most of the T20 leagues around the globe and their players know how T20 is played.

The likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russel, DJ Bravo, Sunil Narine and many more are the life of T20 Franchise Cricket.

Their young players also get the experience of T20 at the very early stages of their careers; some of them have even started their careers by announcing themselves in T20 cricket.

Domestic Structure

Although their domestic structure may not be as strong as some other countries in the longer formats, they have their own Caribbean Premier League. The CPL is arguably the biggest T20 league after IPL and BBL, which provides local players to showcase their talent to the world.

Many big names of Windies cricket like Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Fabian Allen, Keemo Paul, Hayden Walsh Jr., Alzarri Joseph and Rahkeem Cornwall came through CPL.

Importantly, when you combine these young players with their experienced campaigners, a very strong T20 side is shaped.

Natural Game

The natural game of the Windies is the power game. They like to deal in boundaries, which suits T20 cricket. Their openers attack from the first ball and other batsmen are also not afraid to play their shots even if 3-4 wickets are down.

Players like Ewin Lewis, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Kieron Pollard and Shimron Hetmyer can intimidate any bowling lineup. Indeed, Brathwaite did so in 2016, sealing the Title in unbelievable fashion in 2016.

Players for Every Role

West Indies have a great batch of players for every situation and every position.

While they have some explosive batters as mentioned, they also have a fantastic bowling lineup for T20s. With the likes of Cottrell, Holder, Narine, Hayden Walsh Jr., Kharry Pierre and Alzarri Joseph, they can go past any batting lineup on their day. Also, their fielding is world class.

Despite their issues with the Windies board, they were able to get their best squad for the T20 World Cups with the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and all the other senior players to form a very strong squad to play in the T20 World Cups.

Captaincy

Darren Sammy is a champion leader in T20 franchise cricket. All franchises want him to captain their side. He played an important role in the Windies winning two T20 World Cups under his captaincy.

Now, Kieron Pollard is managing the captaincy duties and is doing quite well. West Indies would hope that he also performs well and wins them their third trophy in the T20 World Cup next year in Australia.

Backtrack four years. New Zealand, World Cup Finalists, who also enjoyed a strong home record, travelled to Australia with the hope of achieving a first ever series win downunder.

But, as is the case now, Trent Boult had an injury worry. The Black Caps, World Cup Finalists again in 2019, have had a wonderful year across formats. But, Australia at home is a different beast, and if Boult is indeed missing, New Zealand are left with a hole to fill.

The pace of Lockie Ferguson could help, but with a short turnaround after a decent-length flight, along with scorching 40C temperatures, New Zealand have a test of character awaiting them.

Key to an Australia win

David Warner is imperious at home. His 335*, the highest score by an Australian against an active Test nation, is a reminder of how strong he is at home. He put the Black Caps to the sword four years ago, and if he can do so again, Australia will be mighty hard to beat.

And, when you add Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, all of whom have plenty to offer (Smith the best since Bradman according to many), Australia’s top four can set the game up nicely.

Also, a key factor in Australia’s home success is their fantastic attack. With height and pace the key attribute of their quicks, coupled with the guile and control of Nathan Lyon, Australia have made a habit of grinding teams down with the ball. New Zealand have the patience, so a superb contest awaits against the likes of Latham, Williamson, Taylor and Watling.

Key to a New Zealand win

Despite their deserved number two ranking, New Zealand start as outsiders. To achieve what they haven’t since 1985/86 in Australia – a series win – the bowlers have a significant role to play.

Can a mix of Tim Southee’s subtle movement, Neil Wagner’s underrated persistence and either Trent Boult or Lockie Ferguson unlock an early passage to Australia’s untested middle order so far this season? With the Perth track expected to have some pace and carry with the possibility of breaking up, consistency and skill from the Black Caps will be key.

However, New Zealand’s batting can be their key avenue to getting settled in the series. The form of Jeet Raval is the biggest concern, but with Tom Latham, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and BJ Watling all established players, the Black Caps will be well served having at least two batsmen playing the role of Cheteshwar Pujara last year, with the likes of Taylor and de Grandhomme (if fit) to move the scoring when needed.
