India vs South Africa Predictions: 5 to keep an eye out for

India vs South Africa Predictions: 5 to keep an eye out for. 5 big predictions for the India vs South Africa Test series

After a plethora of one-day and T20 cricket since the Ashes, Test cricket makes a return in high-profile fashion.

India return home for Test cricket after some wait, with the last assignment being a very easy 2-0 series win over West Indies in October 2018. South Africa, who suffered a 3-0 defeat in difficult conditions in 2015, kick-start their World Test Championship campaign with arguably the most challenging road trip in world cricket.

Great players, including AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn, have retired. Some are under injury clouds. Indeed, South Africa start the series as rank outsiders, but, at the same time, it is a chance for players to enhance their reputation. The chance to really kick-start their Test careers and form the basis of something special over the coming months. A great opportunity awaits to hand the hosts a great challenge.

India also have questions to answer. Rohit Sharma returns to the Test fold, this time as opener, which has divided opinion. Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the world’s best bowler, has suffered an injury setback. Spin, as always, will have a key role to play, so India start as overwhelming favourites despite the questions in their camp.

India vs South Africa Predictions

The three-match Test series, beginning in Visakhapatnam, will be South Africa’s ultimate test of spin. If the Proteas believe it is only their batsmen who will feel the pressure, they would be wrong, as their spinners need to hold their own in conditions that will require plenty from them.

So, who will step up? What will the answers be to some of the most pressing questions? What about the series scoreline? Can South Africa challenge India?

Below are five key predictions for the upcoming India vs South Africa series.

1. Leading run-scorer: Virat Kohli (India)

Virat Kohli is a very competitive person. He was dethroned as Test cricket’s number one batsman by Steve Smith in an incredible Ashes campaign. So, expect a big response from Kohli after an under-par series against West Indies by his lofty standards.

Also read: Is Steve Smith the best batsman since Don Bradman?

Also, in 2014, Virat Kohli had a very poor tour of England. Four years later, he was simply outstanding. In 2015, Kohli had a decent series against South Africa, without setting the world on fire as billions know he can. His 200 runs at 33.33 had him fifth among batsmen in that series.

However, in the years since, he has comes leaps and bounds in Test cricket, focused on improving his game as much he can. Four years and 3,755 runs on, Kohli will look to replicate what he did in South Africa and England in 2017: take centre stage in a big series.

2. Leading wicket-taker: Ravichandran Ashwin (India)

India have enjoyed plenty of success in Test cricket at home over the past 5-10 years. One man that comes to mind as part of this journey is Ravichandran Ashwin, who is outstanding in home conditions.

234 of his 342 wickets have come in India, at a superb average of 22.68. With conditions expected to suit spin once again, expect Ashwin to have a major say, particularly after being left out of India’s team for the two Tests in the Caribbean recently.

Ashwin led the way in 2015 with 31 wickets, and will lead the way again for India. His mix of straight balls (horizontal seam) and sharp turners (over spin) will be difficult for the Proteas’ batsmen to handle. He, along with partner in crime Ravindra Jadeja, will be the two to watch out for, along with India’s much-improved pace attack despite the absence of Bumrah.

India vs South Africa Predictions: R Ashwin will have a big series.

3. Aiden Markram: His coming of age

Aiden Markram burst onto the international scene in 2017 as South Africa’s next big thing. A player touted with great leadership qualities after guiding the U19 team to glory in 2014, Markram made a great start to his career before some bumpy moments along the way.

One of those bumpy moments was in Sri Lanka in 2018. In his first tour of Asia as a Test cricketer, Markram struggled against spin, scoring just 40 runs in four innings.

Now, he is set for just his third Test away from home. However, his form in the lead up to this series has been outstanding, hitting two straight centuries (161 and 100) against India A and Indian Board President’s XI respectively.

Prediction: This will be the series where Aiden Markram goes to another level. Can he make 250 runs in the three Tests? I think he will.

4. Rohit Sharma will do enough to keep his place as opener

Rohit Sharma has never opened in a Test match. Moreover, he often bats in the middle order in First Class cricket. So, the decision to open with him in Tests was always going to raise eyebrows.

However, Rohit will do enough to keep his place as opener in this series, despite his duck in the practice game. His battle against Kagiso Rabada will certainly be a key one, but as the new ball moves less for seamers in India than it does in SENA, Rohit will put enough runs on the board to keep his place for India’s series in New Zealand, which will certainly test him further.

His excellent home record (eight 50+ scores in 14 innings) should hold him in good enough stead to avoid a Jason Roy-like situation so soon.

India vs South Africa Predictions: Rohit will do enough.

Series result: India 3-0 South Africa

Rain permitting, we should expect a result in all three Tests. Despite the Proteas producing some encouraging play in the lead up to the Test (Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj), as well as still possessing fine players (Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar and Kagiso Rabada), India will still prove too strong at home.

In conditions expected to turn, the combination of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have 376 wickets between them in India, will be very difficult for an inexperienced Proteas lineup to handle. While South Africa will have their moments, India look a much more rounded side to perform well in these conditions in this series. After all, the better team in a game will almost always go on to win. India are better in these conditions.

Which way do you think this series will go?

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 3: SIN v ZIM Preview Dream11

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 3: SIN vs ZIM Preview Dream11 Prediction. Singapore vs Zimbabwe T20I Preview Dream11 Prediction

Less than 24 hours after being on the receiving end of a Paras Khadka special, Singapore have to dust themselves off and go again. Their preparations for the World T20 Qualifier didn’t start too well, suffering a heavy defeat against Nepal, the side they beat comfortably back in July to reach the World T20 Qualifier.

Indeed, they will be out for an improved showing against Zimbabwe. Quite unconvincing at times against Nepal, the Zimbabweans got home in the end thanks to Richmond Mutumbami and Ryan Burl’s reguard action. Their tendency to lose quick wickets was on show, and like Singapore, will be out for a better showing.

Key to a Singapore win

Singapore didn’t quite capitalise on their strong start in the powerplay vs Nepal. A string of dot balls in the overs following the powerplay hurt their momentum, perhaps falling short (151) of what they could have reached (170+). The form of skipper Timothy David is a plus, and if he can get more proactive support from his top order partners, Singapore are capable of putting pressure on Zimbabwe.

Also, it was a nightmare night in the field vs Nepal. The lack of variations and yorkers was a disappointing aspect of Singapore’s bowling, often bowling in the slot with such short straight boundaries at the Indian Association Ground. With Zimbabwe’s top order failing badly in their opener against Nepal, Singapore have the opportunity to bounce back and remind Zimbabwe of their shortcomings. Can Janak Prakash have another solid outing, and more importantly, who will support him?

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 3: SIN vs ZIM Preview Dream11 Prediction. Singapore vs Zimbabwe T20I Preview Dream11 Prediction

Key to a Zimbabwe win

Zimbabwe won their opening game, but they were far from convincing. Three ducks in their top four doesn’t often translate to victories, but their steady bowling display and middle order under pressure saw them home. To improve as a T20 team, the Zimbabweans need greater consistency across stages of the innings, beginning with the top order, of whom plenty rests on in this clash.

Their victory against Nepal stemmed from their steady bowling display. To restrict any side to 132 on a decent batting track and small boundaries is a fair effort. The bowlers again will play a key part in the quest for victory, and one feels that the wicket of Timothy David will be crucial given how the remainder of Singapore’s top order struggled a little for fluency against Nepal.

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 3: Ryan Burl has proven to be a key player in recent times.

Possible Playing 11

Singapore: 1. Rohan Rangarajan, 2. Surendran Chandramohan, 3. Timothy David (c), 4. Manpreet Singh (wk), 5. Janak Pranah, 6. Vinoth Baskaran, 7. Navin Param, 8. Anatha Krishna, 9. Selladore Vijayakumar, 10. Aryaman Sunil, 11. Sidhant Singh

Zimbabwe: 1. Brian Charl, 2. Regis Chakabva, 3. Tinotenda Mutombodzi, 4. Sean Williams (c), 5. Timycen Maruma/Peter Moor, 6. Ryan Burl, 7. Richmond Mutumbami (wk), 8. Wellington Masakadza, 9. Neville Madziva, 10. Tony Munyonga, 11. Tendai Chatara

Pitch and Conditions

The warm, humid conditions means that there is a chance of rain. The pitch played quite well in the Singapore vs Nepal game, with a century and just four wickets taken across 36 overs.

Stats and Facts

  • This will be the first meeting between Zimbabwe and Singapore in T20Is.
  • Zimbabwe have won their past two T20Is.
  • A win for Singapore will put them equal on two points with both Zimbabwe and Nepal at the halfway stage of the competition.

AUS-W vs SL-W 1st T20I Preview Dream11

AUS-W vs SL-W 1st T20I Preview Dream11 Prediction. Australia Women vs Sri Lanka Women 1st T20I Dream11

The world’s premier team, Australia, begin their blockbuster home season. Finishing with the World T20 in February/March, in which the Women’s team is hoping for a world record crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, another huge opportunity awaits Meg Lanning’s team to write another great chapter in their amazing story.

First on the horizon is Sri Lanka. The sub-continent team begin as rank outsiders, especially given Australia’s merciless 6-0 drubbing of West Indies in the Caribbean’s unrelenting heat and humidity. Nonetheless, this is a chance for the Sri Lankans to test themselves against the world’s best, ensuring they gain experience and confidence ahead of the World T20 beginning in a few months’ time.

Key to an Australia win

Australia’s magnificent batting on paper should mean a difficult outing for Sri Lanka’s bowlers. However, the challenge for the Aussies will be to hit the ground running straight away after plenty of time spent overseas in recent times. Alyssa Healy, as always, remains a huge threat at the top, and with Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning hitting the ball beautifully with centuries in the Caribbean, Australia’s top four can set the game up.

Also, the variety and depth in Australia’s attack gives skipper Lanning plenty of options to turn to. With Sri Lanka a side often unable to score rapidly, Australia’s bowlers can put the squeeze that can turn into wickets. The Aussies were able to rip through a quality England side earlier in 2019, and will be backed to do the same against Sri Lanka.

Key to a Sri Lanka win

To cause an almighty upset, Sri Lanka need a Chamari Atapattu special. With nearly 4,000 international runs under her belt, the Sri Lankan captain has a key role to play in helping her side get through the powerplay and then into their innings. What kind of support can she get from the likes of Yasoda Mendis, Hansima Karunaratne and Shashikala Siriwardena to help set a platform? Then, who can play a key role in finishing the innings strongly?

Also, can Sri Lanka’s medium pacers build pressure on Australia’s magnificent top order? Sri Lanka’s best bet will be to force as many dots as possible, luring the Aussies into forceful strokeplay which can create wicket-taking opportunities. The likes of Udeshika Prabodhani possess quite a bit of experience, which is very much needed in this one.

Sri Lanka: 1. Chamari Atapattu (c), 2. Yasoda Mendis, 3. Hansima Karunaratne, 4. Shashikala Siriwardena, 5. Oshadi Ranasinghe, 6. Harshitha Madavi, 7. Dilani Manodara (wk), 8. Nilakshi de Silva, 9. Ama Kanchana/Anchini Kulasuriya, 10. Sugandikha Kumari, 11. Udeshika Prabodhani

Pitch and Conditions

North Sydney Oval is known for its fine batting pitch and small boundaries. The forecast is fine and sunny.

Stats and Facts

  • Australia have won all meetings against Sri Lanka in ODI and T20I Cricket (eight ODIs, two T20Is).
  • Australia recently took out the Ashes and beat West Indies 6-0 across the ODI and T20I formats on the road.
  • Sri Lanka has lost each of its past nine internationals.

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 1: NEP v ZIM Preview Dream11

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 1: NEP vs ZIM Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. Nepal vs Zimbabwe T20I Dream11 Prediction

Note: This match will be broadcast on Singapore Cricket’s YouTube channel.

The Singapore T20I Tri-Series kicks off on Friday. The two sides, Nepal and Zimbabwe, who play the tournament opener, will be wondering just how different 2019 could have been.

Nepal missed out on qualification to the World T20 Qualifier after losing the Asia Region Final to Singapore in July. Nevertheless, this is an opportunity for Nepal to make a mark in T20I Cricket.

They come up against Zimbabwe, who recently enjoyed their best moment of 2019 thanks to Hamilton Maskadza’s magnificent farewell against Afghanistan in Chattogram. Otherwise, it has been a tough year, unable to participate in the upcoming World T20 Qualifier due to their ICC-imposed suspension. Will they prove they are steps ahead of Nepal in this match?

Key to a Nepal win

Paras Khadka, Nepal’s inspirational captain, has been a prolific run scorer throughout his career to date. As his nation’s leading T20I run scorer with 507, he has a vital role to play in giving Nepal a strong avenue into their innings. Pawan Sarraf also has a key role to play, enabling the likes of Rohit Paudel, Dipendra Singh Airee and Sompal Kami to build on a strong platform against Zimbabwe’s mix of youth and experience.

With the ball, eyes will be on Sandeep Lamichhane. The talented leg-spinner has made a mark in T20 Leagues around the globe, and will be key today against a side that can struggle against spin. His performance in his last T20I (vs Singapore) would have been a let down for him, so he needs to lead the way today. However, much also rests on the likes of Sompal Kami, who has 23 wickets in 21 matches, against a Zimbabwe lineup missing the experience of Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza and Craig Ervine.

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 1: Skipper Khadka will be key.

Key to a Zimbabwe win

Much of Zimbabwe’s T20 struggles originate from their batting, often unable to string together complete batting performances across all stages of an innings. It was often the case in the recent Bangladesh Tri-Series, where they only won their last match thanks mainly to Hamilton Masakadza. However, Masakadza (retired) is no longer around, and with Taylor and Ervine also unavailable, it is time for some of the fringe players – such as Brian Chari and Regis Chakabva to make a mark at the top, along with skipper Sean Williams. With the likes of Tinotenda Mutombodzi and Richmond Mutumbami showing good form in Bangladesh, it is vital that Zimbabwe’s top order give them a platform to play off.

Also, the experienced Kyle Jarvis is unavailable for this series. The likes of Richard Ngarava and Wellington Masakadza have been drafted in, which places onus on the experienced Tendai Chatara to lead the attack well. However, Chatara alone won’t be enough, as Zimbabwe will need to bowl well as a unit against a side that has four T20s worth of experience at the Indian Association Ground in Singapore. Importantly, can the spinners, including Ryan Burl and Sean Williams, outplay Nepal’s?

Singapore T20 Tri-Series Match 1: A happy birthday for Williams?

Possible Playing 11

Nepal could look at playing Sundeep Jora. The 17-year old became the youngest player to score a T20I fifty earlier in 2019.

Nepal: 1. Paras Khadka (c), 2. Pawan Sarraf, 3. Dipendra Singh Airee, 4. Aarif Sheikh, 5. Sundeep Jora, 6. Rohit Paudel, 7. Binod Bhandari (wk), 8. Karan KC, 9. Sompal Kami, 10. Sandeep Lamicchanne, 11. Abinash Bohara

Zimbabwe are set for quite a few changes from their last T20I against Afghanistan.

Zimbabwe: 1. Brian Chari, 2. Regis Chakabva (wk), 3. Sean Williams (c), 4. Peter Moor, 5. Tinotenda Mutombodzi, 6. Ryan Burl, 7. Richmond Mutumbami, 8. Wellington Masakadza, 9. Neville Madziva, 10. Tendai Chatara, 11. Daniel Jakiel/Tony Munyonga

Pitch and Conditions

Scores of 180+ have been achieved in three of the past five games at the Indian Association Ground. However, whoever wins the toss won’t have a straightforward decision as there are thunderstorms predicted around the game’s start time. Expect a delayed start and a pitch with a little moisture in it. It could be a bowl-first situation.

Stats and Facts

  • This match will be broadcast on Singapore Cricket’s YouTube channel.
  • This will be the first time Nepal and Zimbabwe meet in an international.
  • Nepal have played four T20s at the Indian Association Ground in Singapore (two wins, two losses). This will be Zimbabwe’s first match at this ground
  • Zimbabwe have won just two of their past 18 T20Is.
  • Nepal lost their last T20I heavily to Singapore (82 runs).

The neutral could look at this series and wonder what all the fuss might be about. After all, another ODI series awaits, and until the ODI League starts next year, there will be numerous questions as to the context of matches.

However, this remains different, despite the weather playing spoilsport in international cricket’s return to Karachi. It is more than just an ODI series. More than Pakistan’s quest to build on their excellent finish to the World Cup. More than just cricket.

It is about hope. Another opportunity to show the world that cricket can return permanently in Pakistan. It has been a barren 10 years for their passionate fans, starved of international cricket after that incident in 2009. Sri Lanka will be without several of their top players, but that will do little to ruin the atmosphere in Karachi. If all goes well and the series is played without incident, Pakistan can then hope to build on just the 12 international matches played in the country since 2009.

It is indeed a huge series for the people of Pakistan, in Misbah-ul-Haq’s first series as selector/coach. The weather, this time, looks to be clear.

Key to a Pakistan win

The absence of young gun Shaheen Shah Afridi is a bit of a downer. His bout of dengue means we have to wait to see one of the World Cup’s star bowlers in action again, along with Hasan Ali’s (who is out with back spasms) quest for redemption.

Despite this, Pakistan still possess a capable attack, headlined by Mohammad Amir, who like Shaheen, lit up the World Cup during the group stage. An opportunity could also await the teenage fast bowling sensation Mohammad Hasnain, who, along with Wahab Riaz, can provide a threat to the weakened Sri Lankan batting at all stages of the innings. With the spin duo Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim able to both attack and contain, early wickets might be very difficult for Sri Lanka to recover from.

Also, Pakistan fans will get more of a glimpse of the brilliant Babar Azam in the flesh. Boasting an average of over 53 in 72 ODIs, Babar further enhanced his reputation with a fine World Cup campaign. With Sri Lanka missing key bowling personnel, Pakistan’s top three can form a great platform that their hard-hitting middle order can build on. Can Fakhar Zaman repay the faith after a poor World Cup campaign?

Pakistan v Sri Lanka 2nd ODI: Will Babar go big?

Key to a Sri Lanka win

After so much rain washed out the first match, this would certainly ruin the mood further in Karachi. Sri Lanka, missing so much experience, need to hold their own with the ball in what is expected to be good batting conditions. The likes of Isuru Udana, Lahiru Kamara and Nuwan Pradeep will have a key role to play this series against Pakistan’s top order. Indeed, if Sri Lanka are to keep Pakistan quiet, it begins with getting the better of their top three, including the prize wicket of Babar Azam.

Also, the Sri Lankan batsmen have an opportunity to make a mark on what looks an excellent batting surface in Karachi. The absence of key players such as Kusal Perera, Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne leaves a big hole. However, young players have a chance to impress, letting the selectors know that they should be in the plans for future ODI assignments. Can the likes of skipper Lahiru Thirimanne, Danushka Gunathilaka and Avishka Fernando ensure a strong start that the middle order can build on?

Pakistan v Sri Lanka 1st ODI: Lahiru Thirimanne will lead the SL side.

Pitch and Conditions

It is very hot in Karachi at this time of year. The weather is forecast to be about 35 degrees, with some cloud cover expected throughout the day. The forecast looks much more promising for the second match, delayed by one day to give the groundstaff two full days to prepare the ground.

Possible Playing 11

Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali are out of this series with dengue and back spasms respectively. Mohammad Hafeez was not picked, so it could present an opportunity for Asif Ali in the middle order.

Pakistan: 1. Imam-ul-Haq, 2. Fakhar Zaman, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Haris Sohail, 5. Asif Ali, 6, Sarfaraz Ahmed (c & wk), 7. Imad Wasim, 8. Shadab Khan, 9. Mohammad Amir, 10. Wahab Riaz, 11. Mohammad Hasnain

Key Sri Lankan players opted not to travel to Pakistan for this tour. So, it will be quite a new-look Sri Lankan team.

Sri Lanka: 1. Lahiru Thirimanne (c), 2. Danushka Gunathilaka, 3. Avishka Fernando, 4. Sadeera Samarawickrama (wk), 5. Shehan Jayasuriya, 6. Dasun Shanaka, 7. Angelo Perera, 8. Wanindu Hasaranga, 9. Isuru Udana, 10. Nuwan Pradeep, 11. Lahiru Kamara/Lakshan Sandakan

Stats and Facts

  • This will be just the 13th international match in Pakistan since March 2009.
  • Pakistan have won their last four ODIs, which were in the World Cup.
  • Sri Lanka, after losing their first eight ODIs of 2019, have won seven of their last 11 matches.
  • Babar Azam averages 58.33 in seven ODIs vs Sri Lanka. Imam-ul-Haq made his debut against Sri Lanka in 2017 and scored a century.
  • The nine Sri Lankan players who opted out of this ODI series represent 862 matches of experience for Sri Lanka.

In front of a vocal, sizeable crowd in Surat, India snuck home in nervy fashion to take a 1-0 series lead in their best of five series against South Africa. Unfortunately, rain had the full say second time around, completely washing out the second match.

In regards to the cricket, the Indians were well placed for a total larger than their eventual 130/8 in the opening T20I. They recovered from Lizelle Lee’s fast start to then choke the South African batswomen through spin. The starts for India, Mignon du Preez’ superb lone hand and shaky fielding were the themes of a tight first match. Who will take out the third T20I?

Key to an India win

Five of India’s top six reached double figures in the opening T20I. Only skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (43) made a score of note, which puts onus on the likes of the experienced Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues to set the best possible platform for the Indian middle order. Given that the South African made crucial fielding blunders under pressure in the first match, the Indians would be well advised to make the running and force South Africa to respond well.

However, it was a fine night out on the bowling front for India’s spinners. Expected to play a key role against non-Asian opposition on the slow, low Surat track, Radha Yadav, Harmanpreet Kaur, Poonam Yadav and player of the first match Deepti Sharma delivered, combining for eight of the 10 wickets to fall. Can they again build pressure on South Africa, forcing shots in the air and across the line?

Key to a South Africa win

The South Africans have to believe they can bounce back. They were right in the contest for much of the first T20I, with key fielding blunders and a loss of regular wickets at crucial times costing them dearly. Apart from the excellent Mignon du Preez, the South Africans were either too early into their shots or too quick to play across the line against the spinners. Good use of the feet, whilst looking to hit straight, will be the way to go. Can the likes of Lizelle Lee, Laura Wolvaardt and du Preez form the rock of South Africa’s batting?

But, there were positives with the ball for South Africa. Shabnim Ismail, a consistent performer, was wonderful once again in the first T20I. With India’s top order bar Shafali Verma containing plenty of experience, Ismail will again be key in making inroads up top, along with her ability to take wickets at the death. South Africa bowled quite well as a unit first time out, and will need to do so again to restrict the Indian lineup.

Possible Playing 11

15-year old Shafali Verma couldn’t score on her T20I debut. India should give her another chance, meaning Harleen Deol waits her turn. Also, Pooja Vastrakar might be lucky to keep her place after conceding 18 off her one over in the opening T20I.

India: 1. Shafali Verma, 2. Smriti Mandhana, 3. Jemimah Rodrigues, 4. Harmanpreet Kaur (c), 5. Deepti Sharma, 6. Veda Krishnamurthy, 7. Pooka Vastrakar, 8. Radha Yadav, 9. Taniya Bhatia (wk), 10. Shikha Pandey, 11. Poonam Yadav

On a pitch aiding spin, Nonkululeko Mlaba didn’t have the best debut. However, like India, South Africa should persist with the team that gave it a red-hot go in the first match.

South Africa: 1. Lizelle Lee (wk), 2. Tazmin Brits, 3. Laura Wolvaardt, 4. Nadine de Klerk, 5. Mignon du Preez, 6. Sune Luus (c), 7. Nondumiso Shangase, 8. Shabnim Ismail, 9. Ayabonda Khaka, 10. Tumi Sekhukhune, 11. Nonkululeko Mlaba

Pitch and Conditions

There is a chance of rain once again in Surat. In the first T20I, the pitch was quite low and slow, suiting spinners and seamers who bowled nice and straight.

Stats and Facts

  • India have won four of the past five completed matches vs South Africa.
  • Harmanpreet Kaur will play her 98th T20I match. She has 134 runs at an average of 33.50 in seven matches vs South Africa.
  • Smriti Mandhana in T20Is in 2019: 7 matches, 273 runs, average: 39.00, SR: 142.93.
  • Mignon du Preez is set to play her 93rd T20I. Her 59 in the first T20I was a total bigger than all her previous three innings combined in 2019 (34).

Why it is wrong to pick Shikhar Dhawan over KL Rahul in T20Is

Written by Sparsh Telang and Charbel Coorey

India’s drawn T20I series against South Africa in September 2019 was a bit of a roadblock in their preparations for the 2020 World T20. After all, they were the hosts, and despite missing some key bowling personnel, their top three alone had more T20I experience than the entire South Africa squad.

However, India, with their 5-0 series win in New Zealand in early 2020, went a long way to answering many of their questions. One of them was the much-thought about number four slot, which Shreyas Iyer made a great case to make that position his.

However, another talking point is the opening position; there is little reason to play Shikhar Dhawan over KL Rahul when T20I cricket is back underway, and this article will explain why.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Download-CricBlog-E-Book-1-1024x473.jpg

Comparing both records

Shikhar Dhawan did have a passable series against South Africa in September 2019 and then against Sri Lanka in January 2020. However, Dhawan’s overall T20I statistics are quite mediocre.

Shikhar Dhawan in T20Is:

Innings – 59
Runs- 1,588
Average – 28.35
SR – 128.27
50s – 10
100s – 0

The 33-year-old has 10 half-tons in 59 innings, making it one in every 5.9 matches; not quite as prolific as should be the case for one of India’s finest ODI openers. At the same time, Dhawan doesn’t even have a breathtaking strike-rate to hide behind.

In fact, Dhawan has been a below-par batsman in the shortest format of the game for the majority of his career. Since 2013, Dhawan has never averaged above 25 in T20Is in a calendar year, except for 2018. In 12 innings in 2019, Shikhar Dhawan didn’t score a 50, with a very low strike-rate of 110.56.

Why it is wrong to pick Shikhar Dhawan over KL Rahul in T20Is. KL Rahul vs Shikhar Dhawan: Who should India choose in T20Is?
Should Shikhar Dhawan be India’s Plan B in T20Is?

Contrast this to KL Rahul. The Kings XI Punjab opener, of whom no player has more IPL runs since 2018, has a fine T20I record, boosted further by a superb run of form in late 2019-early 2020.

Innings – 38
Runs – 1,461
Average – 45.65
SR – 146.10
50s – 11
100s – 2

In contrast to Dhawan, KL Rahul’s average in a calendar year has never dropped below 36. Moreover, he crosses 50 in every 3.4 innings, with a terrific strike-rate to boot.

So, when Shikhar Dhawan missed cricket due to injury in late 2019 and India decided to rest Rohit Sharma in January, KL Rahul justified his fine record and took full advantage. His incredible run of form from the November series against Bangladesh through to the January/February series in New Zealand was highlighted by his superb ratio of half-century to innings, scoring six 50+ scores in 14 innings during this period. Overall, he slammed 562 runs in 14 innings at an average of 46.83 and strike rate of 143, surely putting to bed the idea of playing Shikhar Dhawan over KL Rahul when everyone is fit and raring to go.

Alternative solutions, should KL Rahul not open

Beyond any doubt, KL Rahul is a superior option to Shikhar Dhawan in T20Is. It is quite extraordinary that one of India’s best T20I batsmen has been consistently in-and-out of the side. He indubitably should be a part of the eleven in the shortest format of the game, no matter be it in the middle-order, since batting position doesn’t affect KL Rahul’s class in T20s: He averages 41.15 whilst opening, 33.12 at No. 3 and 87.00 at No. 4.

Another thing that India might consider doing is sending Kohli to open at play KL Rahul at No. 3. In the last seven years in the IPL, Kohli has scored 3773 runs from exactly 100 innings – he hit more runs and more hundreds than any other player in the tournament. Out of the 100 innings he batted, 55 came as opener where he scored runs at an average of 52.21 and SR of 143.63.

—–

So, will it be KL Rahul to open the batting by the time the World T20 comes around? It would certainly be unfair to keep Rahul on the sidelines in T20Is before the tournament, and then have pressure placed on him to perform right away on the big stage.

However, it is in India’s best interest to have Shikhar Dhawan as a back-up opening batsman in the shortest format of the game. In terms of the numbers and ability, KL Rahul should definitely be preferred over Dhawan.

Will Guyana Amazon Warriors break their CPL duck?

Guyana Amazon Warriors, captained by Pakistani Shoaib Malik, have had quite the CPL journey so far. The Warriors have enjoyed great consistency in CPL cricket, reaching the playoffs in all six campaigns leading into the 2019 season. However, they have finished runners up on an incredible four occasions, with their performance in 2016 particularly disappointing.

Now, CPL 2019 sees the Warriors set to reach the playoffs again after a fantastic first half of the season where they won each of their first six games. So, will 2019 be the year where the exciting Warriors finally lift the CPL Title? In this article, we make the case why this is the year that the Warriors finally go all the way.

Great mix of experience and youth added to the squad in 2019

The addition of the likes of Shoaib Malik, Afghan legspinner Qais Ahmed, Brandon King and World Cup centurion Nicholas Pooran has added another dimension to the Guyana team in 2019.

In particular, the experience of Malik has made an impact on the Warriors. His strong CPL 2019 campaign to date has ensured that Guyana can enjoy crucial runs from its middle order, on the back of strong starts from the hard-hitting top order.

Will Guyana Amazon Warriors break their CPL duck? CPL 2019. CPL 2019 Opinion. Shoaib Malik
Shoaib Malik’s experience has been great for Guyana Amazon Warriors

Long, balanced batting lineup

In the Warriors’ huge win over Jamaica Tallawahs, Australian Chris Green, who is a fair T20 batsman, came in at number eight. Such an in-depth batting lineup can hold the Warriors in fine stead when the big games roll around, as they have several players that can step up when required throughout the innings.

Also, Guyana’s mix of power and finesse is a key factor as to why they are CPL 2019’s form team. Brandon King and Chandrapaul Hemraj have been in the runs so far, giving the Warriors the fast starts that the middle order can play off. With the experience of Malik sandwiched hitting ability of Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford and Keemo Paul, it could very well be that this is the year that Guyana’s batting truly fires in the big games.

Magnificent spin attack

Big totals are a common theme in CPL cricket. After all, the power on display is magnificent. So, teams with potent, capable bowling attacks will have big roles to play come the big matches.

Guyana is a team with an attack that can deliver when it counts.

Headlined by Imran Tahir, part of Chennai Super Kings’ run of success in IPL cricket, the Warriors have both a wicket and run-limiting option throughout the innings. Add to Tahir the miserly Chris Green, who has made a career out of bowling overs in the powerplay, as well as new addition Qais Ahmed, who has made a positive start to his CPL 2019 campaign.

Indeed, with seamers often going the distance so far in CPL 2019, quality spin can be key in building pressure. Guyana have perfected this so far, limiting teams to low scores in a high-scoring tournament to date. They have it in them to continue to do so when the playoffs come around.

Will Guyana Amazon Warriors break their CPL duck? CPL 2019. CPL 2019 Opinion. Shoaib Malik
The experience and quality of Imran Tahir is a huge advantage for Guyana Amazon Warriors

Previous experience will spur them on

Four lost finals in six years can be hard to take. Several players in this Guyana side have experienced defeat in a Final, including Hetmyer, Rutherford, Green and Tahir. However, the Warriors look determined to right the wrongs this time around, as they look to learn from their shortcomings from previous campaigns.

Past experience in big games can very well give the Warriors an edge in this season’s CPL.

Ban T20 Tri-Series Final: BAN v AFG Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. Bangladesh vs Afghanistan T20 Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

When it comes to international cricket’s fledgling rivalries, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan is one to keep an eye on. With a number of closely fought ODI battles, Afghanistan’s Test win on Bangladesh soil, followed closely by Bangladesh’s T20I fightback, the stage is set for an interesting Tri-Series Final.

In the end, the two sides expected to reach the Final did so. Zimbabwe disappointed until their final match, where Hamilton Masakadza had the perfect farewell. However, what might not have been expected was Bangladesh topping the table considering their mostly barren run in T20Is over the past few years, in contrast to Afghanistan who had entered this series with 10 straight wins under their belt. Shakib Al Hasan delivered the goods in the pre-Final rehearsal a few nights ago, as Rashid Khan, worryingly, is in doubt due to a hamstring injury picked up in the same game.

Key to a Bangladesh win

Despite three wins in four matches, Bangladesh aren’t without their issues. The lack of input from their openers is an area for concern, as is the ill-discipline on show from experienced players. Shakib, after a poor first three games, hit form with a fine knock last time out. He has to deliver again. Indeed, if he can walk in after a solid opening stand this time around, he and Bangladesh’s middle order can be tasked with finishing well rather than rebuilding. Can Liton Das in particular convert attractive play to a substantial score?

However, what will be really pleasing for Bangladesh is how their bowlers have fared in the past two games. After Afghanistan’s openers set a strong platform last time out, Bangladesh combined as a unit to stifle the progress of the dangerous Afghan middle order. The form of Mustafizur Rahman is a key area of focus, but if the likes of Mohammad Saifuddin and Shafiul Islam continue their good form, both the Fizz and spinners can create wicket-taking opportunities.

Key to an Afghanistan win

It has been a tournament of two halves for Afghanistan when it comes to their batting. The first two games saw them lose early wickets, with the middle order left with a recovery job. To paint a picture, Afghanistan were 19/3 in their first meeting against Bangladesh. They finished with 164/6. In their second meeting, they fell from 75/0 to 138/7.

After two games, the trio of Asghar Afghan, Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi had 250 runs between them off 162 balls. The next two games? Just 27. Such a fall has hurt Afghanistan after openers Rahmanullah and Hazratullah have put on an 83 and 75 run-stand in the past two games respectively. Can the Afghans get things right across all stages of the innings this time?

Also, with Rashid Khan set to be hampered with injury if he does take the field, much rests on Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb ur Rahman in the spin department. However, the seamers have a crucial role in building pressure, which can reap rewards as the Bangladeshi batsmen are prone to poor shot selection. Can the likes of Naveen-ul-Haq, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib deliver the goods?

Possible Playing 11

The form of Liton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Sabbir Rahman is a concern for Bangladesh. However, the Tigers might guard against too many changes for a Final.

Bangladesh: 1. Liton Das, 2. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 3. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Sabbir Rahman, 7. Afif Hossain, 8. Mosaddek Hossain, 9. Mohammad Saifuddin, 10. Shafiul Islam, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

Afghanistan will be sweating on the fitness of Rashid Khan. He was still able to bowl last game with his injury, but went the distance by Shakib in a crucial over in the run chase.

Afghanistan: 1. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2. Hazratullah Zazai, 3. Asghar Afghan, 4. Najibullah Zadran, 5. Mohammad Nabi, 6. Gulbadin Naib, 7. Shafiqullah, 8. Rashid Khan (c), 9. Karim Janat, 10. Naveen-ul-Haq, 11. Mujeeb ur Rahman

Pitch and Conditions

The Final will be held in Mirpur after the second half of the league stage was played in Chittagong. Teams batting first won two of three matches at SBNS this series. There is a good chance of rain in the evening in Dhaka.

Stats and Facts

  • After 12 straight T20I victories, Afghanistan have now lost two matches in a row.
  • Bangladesh’s win in the last T20I was just their second against Afghanistan in six meetings against them.
  • Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi and Najibullah Zadran have scored just 27 runs between them in the last two T20Is. The corresponding figure from the first two T20Is was 250.
  • Bangladesh only won their first multi-team tournament earlier this year, after beating West Indies in the Ireland Tri-Series Final before the World Cup.

India v South Africa 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. IND vs SA 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

South Africa’s sub-continent assignment was expected to be a challenging one. Expectations turned to reality as they fell to a convincing defeat in Mohali, after the rain played spoilsport in Dharmasala. A complete turnaround is needed at the traditionally high-scoring ground that is the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

India, only challenged by Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma’s threatening stand, were mostly in cruise control in the first T20I. The bowlers were miserly as much as Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in particular were irresistible, producing a clinical performance as part of their World T20 preparations. Indeed, they are favourites to take this series 2-0.

Key to an India win

Imagine the foothold India could get in the match if they dismiss Quinton de Kock early? de Kock, who knows the ground well thanks to his time in the IPL, will be out to build on his strong showing in Mohali. So, Washington Sundar and Deepak Chahar, who are quickly becoming India’s T20I powerplay experts, have a key role in building the pressure on South Africa early. Then, with the Proteas’ middle order needing to be more effective than Mohali, India can look to limit the boundaries again in the middle overs.

Also, the Virat Kohli cover drive and flick is something to behold. The Indian skipper went past an average of 50 once again in T20Is, making him the only player in world cricket to average at least 50 in all three formats. More runs await at a ground he knows so well as RCB captain, and with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma at the top, India can bank on a strong start. However, can Rishabh Pant play the breakthrough innings he needs in T20I cricket to keep the momentum going for India?

Key to a South Africa win

Quinton de Kock is a huge key, but he needs his teammates to deliver, too. His dismissal in Mohali then saw a significant drop in the run rate, of which 41 runs were scored in the next 41 balls. So, who else will step up this time? Can Reeza Hendricks emulate the kind of form he showed for South Africa A in the lead up to this series? Will Temba Bavuma again help set a platform, of which Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller and the all-rounders can finish off better than the first T20I?

Also, Kagiso Rabada returns to the ground where he took 4/21 in IPL 2019. However, a strong India side at home presents a different challenge than a struggling RCB side. He was largely ineffective in Mohali, which put South Africa well behind the eight-ball in defending an under-par score. With the Proteas’ spinners and all-rounders displaying some semblance of control at times in Mohali, can they pick up at least two of India’s top three early to put pressure on India’s middle order?

Junior Dala has a good record vs Rohit Sharma in T20s (three dismissals in seven balls). He could get a chance ahead of Anrich Nortje or perhaps one of the spinners, given that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium can be a graveyard for slow bowlers.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (c & wk), 2. Reeza Hendricks, 3. Rassie van der Dussen, 4. Temba Bavuma, 5. David Miller, 6. Andile Phehlukwayo, 7. Dwaine Pretorius, 8. Bjorn Fortuin/Junior Dala, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Anrich Nortje, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

Pitch and Conditions

Batsman can hit through the line at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The shorter boundaries makes life difficult for spinners, of which South Africa in particular could look to avoid. Unfortunately, though, rain is expected to have a say in the match.

Stats and Facts

  • Junior Dala has dismissed Rohit Sharma three times in three T20s.
  • Rishabh Pant has been dismissed for seven single-digit scores in his last 10 T20Is innings.
  • Quinton de Kock has scored 384 runs in 10 T20s in Bengaluru.
  • Virat Kohli has ample experience at this ground: 75 IPL T20s, 2,346 runs with three centuries and 16 fifties.
  • David Miller has scored just 103 runs in six IPL innings on this ground.
