Ban T20 Tri-Series Match 2: AFG vs ZIM Preview Dream11

Ban T20 Tri-Series Match 2: AFG vs ZIM Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11

Heartbreak continues to follow Zimbabwe. In what has been a tough year, Hamilton Masakadza’s team squandered a great opportunity to begin the Bangladesh T20I Tri-Series with a win. They were well in control after Ryan Burl’s big hitting and the seam bowlers’ excellent start, before succumbing to Bangladesh youngsters Afif Hossain and Mosaddek Hossain to make it 14 defeats in their last 17 T20Is.

And it doesn’t get much easier. Just 24 hours later, they will play Afghanistan, arguably favourites to take out this Tri-Series with 10 straight T20I wins to their name. The Afghan spin attack, headlined by skipper Rashid Khan, is their major trump card, and it remains to be seen if they can make a strong start to pile the pressure on Zimbabwe after two games. Coming off a landmark Test win just under a week ago, Afghanistan’s confidence will be sky-high.

Key to an Afghanistan win

Zimbabwe’s poor finish with the ball is an opportunity for Afghanistan. In Hazratullah Zazai, Afghanistan have a true T20 specialist at the top, striking at 209.3 in his five T20Is to date. However, he and the Afghanistan top order will have to overcome Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara, who ripped through the Bangladesh top order to leave them reeling in the powerplay. If they can, then a hard-hitting middle order can be very difficult to stop.

Also, how well will Afghanistan’s spinners cope in greasy conditions? Both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe struggled to execute their plans in the death overs of the series opener, which puts onus on Afghanistan to perform better at this stage. Mujeeb ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi have been superb as a spin trio in Afghanistan’s run of T20I victories, and they will be asked to deliver 12 strong overs that the seamers can build on.

Key to a Zimbabwe win

Ryan Burl has been a shining light in a tough 2019 for Zimbabwe. His power hitting – which included 30 off a Shakib Al Hasan over – said that he is not willing to pay anyone respect. However, more is required from the experienced players, including Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine and Sean Williams, who were all out cheaply against Bangladesh. If they again slip to 60-odd for five or worse, they might not be able to recover this time around. How well will they handle Rashid Khan and his spin partners? Can Zimbabwe keep the scoreboard ticking without losing regular wickets?

Also, Zimbabwe’s fielding is cause for improvement. Ryan Burl and Hamilton Masakadza took stunning catches outside and inside the ring respectively, but outside that, the Zimbabweans gave away crucial runs under pressure. To win here, they need to be clinical in the field, with Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara hitting excellent areas in the powerplay overs to make inroads. Can Zimbabwe then build on any good periods of play?

Pitch and Conditions

Showers are often lurking in Dhaka at this time of year. However, like the T20I Tri-Series opener, the rain should stay away for most of the night. The pitch for the first game had something in it for everyone: lower order batsmen could hit through the line, seamers found some nip and spinners got the ball to stop in the track and turn occasionally.

Stats and Facts

  • Afghanistan have won their past 10 T20Is.
  • Also, Afghanistan have won their past five T20Is against Zimbabwe.
  • Rashid Khan vs Zimbabwe: Seven matches, 11 wickets, average: 15.91.
  • Mohammad Nabi was man of the match in each of Afghanistan’s two wins over Zimbabwe in 2018.
  • Ryan Burl has scored 49*, 53 and 57* as part of his last five innings for Zimbabwe in the T20I and ODI formats. He has often come in with his team in trouble in recent times.

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe are two sides who know each other well. After all, these two sides coming together is one of world cricket’s more frequent rivalries.

However, they meet now with stability the main agenda item. Inconsistency and external factors have plagued their fortunes, where both sides have struggled for T20 form over the past few years.

Six wins in their past 22 T20Is since the beginning of 2017 makes sorry reading for Bangladesh. They are still yet to decode the format as well as they have in ODIs, with their often shot-a-ball approach failing them time and time again. Couple this with a bad Test defeat to Afghanistan, a reluctant captain and a bowling attack that is constantly changing in personnel, and things don’t always look too rosy for the Tigers. A win here will calm things down a little, just as Shakib wanted in the Afghanistan Test.

In the opposite corner, Zimbabwe are down and out for the count. But, they will not remain down for long. Their desire to continue to play on, despite the ICC suspension in place, is an incredible display of love for the game. However, just as the case off the field, Zimbabwe have struggled on it, winning just three of their past 16 T20Is, which included a run of 11 straight losses before beating Netherlands in June. Will it be they who kick off the Tri-Series with a win and begin Hamilton Masakadza’s farewell in style?

Key to a Bangladesh win

Spin has been a major weapon in Bangladesh’s arsenal against Zimbabwe at home in all formats. Shakib Al Hasan is the team’s leading wicket-taker against Zimbabwe in T20Is with 12, and the likes of Taijul Islam have also enjoyed success against their rivals on home soil. Spin will again be key, along with Bangladesh’s pace stocks, spearheaded by Mustafizur Rahman, who was in the wickets in the recently concluded World Cup. Can Bangladesh make a strong start in the powerplay, where they can often struggle in white-ball cricket, then backed by strong middle and death-over periods?

However, batting is an area Bangladesh have struggled with in T20Is. Their lack of strike rotation is an area for improvement if they are both qualify and compete in the World T20 main stage next year, with boundary, dot or out currently a common theme in their batting. With Tamim Iqbal still rested, Liton Das is one to watch out for after a solid year in 2018, along with Soumya Sarkar who simply must start converting his starts into something more substantial. A good start then sets things up for Bangladesh’s experienced middle order to build on.

Key to a Zimbabwe win

It has been a very glum 2019 for Zimbabwe. Along with watching the World Cup from the sidelines after heartbreak in 2018, they struggled in Europe vs Netherlands and Ireland before the news of their suspension. However, after originally opting out of Bangladesh for this Tri-Series, Zimbabwe then decided to do what it takes to keep cricket alive in the country. Can they translate this incredible attitude to the batting crease, putting aside all distractions to overcome Bangladesh’s attack that is often potent in home conditions? Can Hamilton Masakadza overcome his recent poor form to get Zimbabwe off to a flyer, with the likes of Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine to follow?

Also, much rests on Zimbabwe’s bowling attack. Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara have both enjoyed some success against Bangladesh in the past, and both will be key particularly in the powerplay and death overs. In between, Zimbabwe’s group of spinners, including the all-rounders, have a key role to play in building dot ball pressure against the Bangladeshi batsmen who love to deal in boundaries.

19-year old all-rounder Afif Hossain has been in good touch for Bangladesh’s emerging teams in 2019. He could lineup ahead of Mosaddek Hossain.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch in Mirpur has been good for batting in T20Is in recent years. However, there is a strong chance of rain which could influence the decision at the toss.

Stats and Facts

  • Hamilton Masakadza’s 1529 runs in this format are the most by a Zimbabwean. However, Craig Ervine has been Zimbabwe’s best over the past year, with 211 runs at 70.33.
  • Zimbabwe won the last T20I they played in Dhaka, in a thrilling last-over finish.
  • Shakib Al Hasan has the most runs and wickets for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in T20Is (185 runs at 37.00 and 12 wickets at 17.50).
  • Zimbabwe won their tour match vs BCB XI by seven wickets. Brendan Taylor top scored with 57*, and Timycen Maruma finished beautifully with 46* off 28 balls.

Ashes 2019: England v Australia 5th Test Preview Dream11

England v Australia 5th Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. ENG vs AUS 5th Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

Just as we began to take it all in, we are back at it again.

England’s quest for a remarkable Ashes turnaround – courtesy of the brilliant Ben Stokes – didn’t quite materialise at Old Trafford. Their slow start to the Test put them behind the eight-ball, resulting in their seventh loss in the past 10 Ashes Tests. James Anderson stated his dissatisfaction with the pitches, but truth be told, they have been outplayed for much of the series.

Australia’s Ashes 2019 campaign was a shot at redemption. The banned trio were back, and Tim Paine’s men aimed to become the first Australian side since 2001 to retain the Ashes in England. Two of the banned trio have underwhelmed, but the performance of the third – Steve Smith – has left us all in awe and has been a key difference between the teams. Australia’s bowlers have too been outstanding, and will now look to match what England achieved on Australian soil in 2010/11: a 3-1 win.

Key to an England win

“We’re fully focused on doing everything we can to finish the series 2-2”, said Joe Root, England’s under-fire captain. However, if England are to save this series, Root has to deliver more than he has. There is a case that the captaincy has burdened him, with his average plummeting from 52 to 40 since taking over the reigns. His three half centuries have been combined with three ducks – including two golden – representative of both he and England’s inconsistencies in this series. He needs a big knock if England are to level the series.

England v Australia 5th Test: Tough going for Joe Root

Also, Jason Roy has been put out of his misery, now asked to watch the action rather than have his stumps castled. England perhaps missed an opportunity to draft in the likes of Ollie Pope and Dominic Sibley, but if England’s top four, which now includes Ben Stokes, can deliver the start they have so often lacked in the series, they will be held in good stead. With Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler in need of runs, a strong start, as well as strong batting options in Sam Curran and Chris Woakes behind them, might be just what they need.

Also, another criticism of Joe Root has been his inability to stick to a plan long enough, as former Australian captain Ian Chappell pointed out in his usual ‘no mucking around’ style during the fourth Test. Steve Smith continues to be the thorn in England’s side, but England need not play into his hands by changing their plans constantly. The fourth-fifth stump line is where England have often beaten Smith in this series, which speaks towards sticking to that line. Indeed, with David Warner, Marcus Harris and Australia’s middle order (bar Marnus Labuschagne) underwhelming, England can make significant inroads if they get the better of Australia’s instatiable run-scoring beast.

England v Australia 5th Test: Where England need to persist against Steve Smith

Key to an Australia win

There is an argument that Steve Smith is performing at a higher level now than pre-one year ban. His ability to overcome difficult periods to get Australia into winning positions has been a thing of beauty, pounding England into oblivion with 998 balls faced and 671 runs scored in just five innings. He returns to The Oval, where he has made two centuries in as many Tests there – in 2013 and 2015. All eyes will undoubtedly be on him again.

Also read: Is Steve Smith better now than pre-Cape Town?

England v Australia 5th Test: Just can’t get enough.

But, Australia’s batting outside Smith has been a worry. Smith has scored 32% of Australia’s runs, despite missing three innings, with only Marnus Labuschagne holding his own. On a ground where he has enjoyed runs before, David Warner has the chance, with the Ashes retained, to make a score. His record against Broad is dire, but how he handles movement in the air will be crucial as the pitch is expected to be good for batting. Indeed, if he gets going, the likes of Labuschagne and Smith become even more dangerous, with support from the middle order.

Also, Australia’s pace attack has been simply brilliant. Their performance at Old Trafford was outstanding, with Pat Cummins’ delivery to Joe Root and Josh Hazlewood’s to Jos Buttler etched in Ashes folklore. There is a chance the superhuman Cummins might be rested for this match, and if he is, the attack must work as a unit on a good batting pitch. With Mitchell Marsh brought into the XII, his overs will be mighty important right away. Can the Australians find movement in the air throughout the Test as they did at Old Trafford?

Jason Roy has been axed by England. Ben Stokes will move to four as he won’t bowl, with Sam Curran and Chris Woakes back.

England: 1. Rory Burns, 2. Joe Denly, 3. Joe Root (c), 4. Ben Stokes, 5. Jonny Bairstow (wk), 6. Jos Buttler, 7. Sam Curran, 8. Chris Woakes, 9. Jofra Archer, 10. Jack Leach, 11. Stuart Broad

Travis Head, who averages 42.70 after 12 Tests, is a little unlucky to be left out. Mitchell Marsh is set to take his place. Also, Peter Siddle is a good chance of playing, and it could be for Pat Cummins who has had a big workload.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Marcus Harris, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steven Smith, 5. Matthew Wade, 6. Mitchell Marsh, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Pat Cummins/Peter Siddle, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Nathan Lyon, 11. Josh Hazlewood

Pitch and Conditions

A brown and flat-looking pitch is on the menu at The Oval. The first day is expected to be overcast, followed by sunny weather heading into the weekend.

Stats and Facts

  • David Warner has scored 79 runs in eight innings in Ashes 2019. Steve Smith’s lowest score is 82.
  • However, Warner scored 85 in his last innings at The Oval, getting through a tough early period.
  • Steve Smith has 671 runs in just five innings this series. The next best is Ben Stokes with 354.
  • Stuart Broad averages 36.47 with the ball in 11 Tests at The Oval. However, he has been excellent this series, with 19 wickets at 26.
  • Joe Root at The Oval: Six matches, 514 runs, average: 51.40.

Steve Smith: Australia’s insatiable run-scoring beast | Is Steve Smith the Best Since Bradman?

Who will win the Ashes?“, pondered two nations and millions of fans ahead of one of the most anticipated Test series on the cricketing calendar. By the time the Edgbaston Test was over, the question quickly turned to “how the hell do you get Steve Smith out?”

Mostly in the UK. Australian fans were simply loving it.

The question of how to get Smith out was also very prevalent in the 2017/18 series, where Smith plundered the England attack to all parts. However, there is an argument to Steve Smith’s brilliance in Ashes 2019: he has come back an even better player since serving his one year suspension in the fallout of Cape Town.

https://twitter.com/ESPNcricinfo/status/1170381433862574083?s=20
Just another match for Smith.

Why Steve Smith is better now than when he left the game temporarily

It is a big statement to make. After all, the man began his one year suspension with 6,199 Test runs in 63 Tests, at a remarkable average of 61.38.

However, he, along with other Australian batsmen, were beneficiary of a change in Australian conditions over the past five years. With cricket grounds now forced to share with other sporting codes more than ever before, the rise of drop-in pitches has made life very pleasant for batsmen in Test matches in Australia.

To paint a picture, David Warner, who has three ducks in a row in Ashes 2019, has scored 2,745 runs at 65.36 in Tests in Australia between 2013/14 and 2017/18. Usman Khawaja, who was dropped for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, averages nearly 53 at home. Also, Mitchell Marsh, who is considered a no-go zone for many given his struggle to repay the faith, scored two centuries in the 2017/18 Ashes. England looked toothless with the Kookaburra ball on benign surfaces, which included the awful MCG track, reported by the ICC.

However, the key difference with Smith, particularly in Ashes 2019, has been his ability to overcome challenging circumstances and conditions. With the top three struggling, he has often played the role of opener, weathering the England storm and holding fort strongly.

The same couldn’t be said of his 2015 campaign, where Smith, despite his excellent numbers, struggled on pitches offering more assistance for the bowlers. When he scored big, others did too. Fast forward four years, and Smith has almost single handedly kept the Urn in Australia, displaying such an insatiable hunger for runs that England fans who started the summer booing the man could then not help but applaud him.

A truly staggering performance.

https://twitter.com/CricCrazyJohns/status/1169648934475583489?s=20
Just too good.

Steve Smith’s incredible Ashes 2019 campaign

There aren’t enough words or superlatives to describe Steve Smith right now. Three innings was all it took to replace Virat Kohli as Test Cricket’s premier batsman, who himself had outstanding series in South Africa and England last year. However, if you thought Kohli’s 593 runs in a low-scoring series in England was great (which it was), then Smith’s 671 runs in five innings is something truly out of this world. All in the face of adversity, coming back from a ban.

The best part about it? It was far from easy, but Steve Smith made it look so. From Plan A, B all the way to Z, England tried absolutely everything to get better of the world’s premier Test batsman. They thought they had done so when Jofra Archer felled him at Lord’s. But, Smith stood firm, adjusting the way he would play the short ball, courtesy of trademark hours and hours of practice between matches.

Not bad for a guy who started his Test career as a legspinner who batted at eight.

Hope for us all!

However, Smith’s exploits go beyond how he responded to the Archer challenge. Beyond how he doesn’t get tired of batting. Beyond his love for the game. Every batsmen participating in this Ashes series loves the game, but none possess the mental strength and insatiable hunger Smith has, even if their technique looks better to the eye. Smith was faced with difficult situations, where it was just him standing in the way of total England dominance as the others fell like nine pins. The ball was doing quite a bit, too, which Smith would struggle with at times pre-one year ban.

At Edgbaston, Smith led the way as he rescued Australia from the depths of 122/8. He followed it up with a second innings century for good measure, after Australia lost early wickets while still trailing England on the first innings. Lord’s came around and another century was beckoning, fighting his way against some of the best fast bowling you’ll see from Jofra Archer. He may have copped a bad knock, but he then delivered the ultimate knockout blow at Old Trafford with his third Ashes double century.

Joe Root will surely go to bed at night for the next week thinking of Steve Smith’s backside. England executed their plans and found success against every other batsman (bar Marnus Labuschagne), but when it came to Smith, they simply had no answer. They beat the bat at times on the fourth/fifth stump line, but on occasions where Smith would just shuffle across to work the ball to leg, England felt that off-stump wouldn’t be enough to get this man out.

Surely, just surely, he will eventually miss a straight one. Not on Steve’s watch.

As he continued to plunder runs, Jack Leach’s no ball sucked the life out of Old Trafford. It takes a special player to suck the life out of a cauldron, and Steve Smith did just that.

Also, spare a thought for Pat Cummins, whose performances in this series would take centre stage in most other series. But, not when Smith is in this mood.

Is Steve Smith the best batsman since Bradman?

The burning question. Is Steve Smith the best player in the last 70 years?

The statistics say he is. An average close to 65 after 67 Tests is extraordinary. Even more extraordinary is his record in the first innings of Tests since 2013. In 34 innings, Smith has plundered 3,142 runs at an average in excess of 100. This is 787 runs more than the next best – Joe Root – who has played 12 innings more than Smith. In addition, Steve Smith has the highest average in away Test wins in history, with 108.6. Sir Don Bradman is next with 96.8. Ridiculous.

Steve Smith: Australia's insatiable run-scoring beast. A look at Steve Smith, one of Australia's best ever. Ashes 2019.
Extraordinary numbers.

However, while I won’t argue with anyone who believes Smith is the best since Bradman, players of yesteryear who encountered some of the world’s greatest bowlers, particularly without a helmet, should always be held in very high regard. The likes of Sir Vivian Richards, Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar and more can never be forgotten. More recently, the likes of Steve Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, AB de Villiers and Ricky Ponting played some of the greatest bowlers ever on sporting pitches.

It is very tough to compare players across eras. However, when doing so, statistics should form part of the discussion, not all of it. One thing is for certain, though – Steve Smith is one of the all-time greats. Who knows just where this man could finish up by the end of his career.

I’ll answer the Bradman question then.

Ashes 2019: England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings. ENG vs AUS 4th Test Player Ratings

For the first time since 2001, Australia have retained the Ashes on English soil. Captain Tim Paine, labelled all kinds of names after a horror finish to the third Test, has outdone the likes of Ricky Ponting in having success on English soil.

However, Ponting and even Clarke would have loved to have Steve Smith in this kind of form. Not in recent memory has one man dominated a series like this, especially when you consider the man has missed 1.5 Tests. He has transformed boos into rapturous applause, with all associated with England appreciative of such brilliance but sick of the sight of him at the same time. From Plan A to Z, Smith had all the answers, then backed up by a pace bowling attack that put on a clinic. The Urn remains in Australia – utter joy in the Aussie camp!

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Great reaction

The equation was simple for England: get bowled out for less than 100, then win the Test! After all, they have won both Tests in which they were bundled out for under 100 this summer, and lost the rest, except for Lord’s. In all seriousness, this is a series of missed opportunity for England, who often stood up to the fight when it was too late. Old Trafford was another example of this, starting the match so slowly and then always playing catch up as a result.

In this article, I will rate each player out of 10 from Australia’s win in the final hour at Old Trafford.

England

Rory Burns: One of England’s best at eating up deliveries, Burns’ early dismissal in the second innings was a dagger blow. His first innings fight gave England a foothold in the game. 6.5

Joe Denly: Thrown into the opener’s role to protect someone whose gap between bat and pad is wide enough to drive a truck through, Denly held his own in the second dig. Caught twice at short leg in the match. 6

Joe Root: Name: Joe Root. Age: 28. Occupation: Figuring out how to get Steve Smith out. It could be time Root is relieved of the captaincy to just focus on his batting, preferably in the number four spot. To be fair, there is not much most could do with such a great delivery first up in the second innings. However, the poor conversion rate and lack of patience with Plan A to Steve Smith still haunts him, along with becoming the first England captain to score three ducks in a Test series. Who could have possibly thought that bowling on Smith’s hip with three men out on the leg side would work? 6.5

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Tough going for Root.

Jason Roy: The absolute scenes when Jason Roy, who swapped with Joe Denly to bat at four, still faced up before Denly in the second innings. 20’s and 30’s don’t win you Test matches, just as leaving a huge gap between bat and pad isn’t the recipe to a big innings. Intruders will always rob you if you leave the door open: Jason Roy has now been bowled three times in a row this series. 5

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings. ENG vs AUS 4th Test Player Ratings
England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Huge gap between bat and pad.

Ben Stokes: Has the sun set on the glorious summer of Stokes? Indeed, it is very unfair for England to continue to pin their hopes on this man, who without him would have been staring at the prospect of not winning a single Test in a home Ashes series. A tough match with bat and ball for Stokes. 4

Jonny Bairstow: Bairstow’s lack of impact has also been a significant factor in England’s Ashes campaign. Again, unconverted starts is the sorry story. 5

Jos Buttler: Buttler had Australia nervous with fighting efforts, particularly in the second dig. However, just as Simon Jones’ ball to Michael Clarke in 2005 is written in Ashes folklore, so too is Josh Hazlewood’s beautiful inswinger to Buttler to leave survival to the tail. 6

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: 2019 vs 2005.

Craig Overton: What a brilliant fight by Craig Overton, taking the game right till the final hour. It took a fine piece of bowling by Josh Hazlewood to dismiss him. His technique and commitment is something that some batsmen from both sides can learn from. 7

Jofra Archer: One of the biggest enigmas from this Test. A long summer rendered it understandable that his pace was down in the first innings. However, the pace was cranked up to 90mph+ in the second innings, after bowling 27 overs in the first. The change in intensity was too late. The big opportunity was when Australia were two down for not many, with Smith in early on the first day. England and Archer missed the boat then. 4

Stuart Broad: Broad is all over Warner like a bad rash. Eight balls is all it took in this Test to dismiss Warner twice. All in all, Broad has had a fine series, moving the ball at good pace. 8

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings. ENG vs AUS 4th Test Player Ratings
England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Bunny alert

Jack Leach: Leach scored the most important run in Ashes history at Headingley. He then conceded the most important run in the very next Test. However, he bowled well in periods, to go with more compact, organised batting. He has become a fan favourite. 6

Australia

David Warner: When you did no work in the group assignment but still got an A. It is incredible that Australia have retained the Ashes with Warner in such poor form. 0

Marcus Harris: Has not taken his opportunity with both hands with the bat. Not much better when it comes to reviewing. When it comes to celebrating, though, it is different story! 2

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Marcus Harris – Gold.

Marnus Labuschagne: One of Australia’s heroes in this series. It is such a brilliant story. The man would not have played a single minute had Smith not been felled at Lord’s. His half century on the first day was crucial, along with his wicket on the final day to remove Jack Leach. His place is locked and loaded for the Aussie summer. Baby Smudge! 8

Steve Smith: What can we say about this guy? Had Smith not missed 1.5 Tests in this series, Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 974 runs in a single series would have been under serious threat. Whatever England have thrown at him, he has had an answer. And man, did they try everything they could. There is an argument that he has come back even better since his ban, overcoming challenging circumstances and conditions to bury England. After giving everyone an eight month head-start, Smith now leads the run scoring chart in Test cricket in 2019. His series reads: 142, 144, 92, 211, 82. And not once did a bowler get him out on account of fine bowling. Rather, he was hitting out looking for quick runs. The key difference between the two sides. Absolutely extraordinary. 10

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: What a series.

Travis Head: Another player in the Australian lineup who can go to another level. He often gets in, batting at least 20-30 balls before getting out. The next Test at The Oval will be a big one for Head. 4

Matthew Wade: His shot in the first innings was worthy of getting the axe. However, his second innings century stand with Steve Smith was a big positive in Wade’s match. Before that, sledging Jofra Archer might have been his only highlight. 5

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Careful Wade, don’t be that guy.

Tim Paine: The first Australian captain since 2001 to retain the Ashes in England. Say what you want about Paine, but he deserves praise here after he was rightly criticised after Headingley. He managed the bowlers well, with a number of inspired bowling changes, most notably Marnus Labuschagne to Jack Leach in the final hour. A half century was icing on the cake. 8

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings. ENG vs AUS 4th Test Player Ratings
England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Tim Paine has done well.

Mitchell Starc: Australia got exactly what they expected out of Starc in this Test. He can bowl loose balls, followed by a jaffer out of nowhere. Batsmen can never relax against him, and that is a fine quality to have. He was third best behind Cummins and Hazlewood, but three of his four wickets were absolutely crucial in the context of the match: Ben Stokes once and Jonny Bairstow twice. This was coupled with a fine half century to flatten England further on day two. 8

Pat Cummins: Just brilliant. He showed why he is the number one bowler in the world, running in tirelessly. He was unrelenting on the England batsmen. The ball to Joe Root is written in Ashes history, but he never let up all Test. If he could get through Chittagong two years ago, then Old Trafford was never going to stop him. 10

England v Australia 4th Test Player Ratings: Pat Cummins. All heart.

Nathan Lyon: The cut/callus on Lyon’s finger hindered him on the final day. However, his very straight bowling throughout the Test was cause for frustration. After throwing the ball wider outside off-stump, he reaped some long-awaited rewards. Importantly, though, he didn’t let England get away too quickly. 6

Josh Hazlewood: Hazlewood’s run up and rhythm is so smooth that it is worth the price of admission on its own. Like Cummins, Hazlewood confirmed his world class status with relentless bowling, particularly on the third evening where he took three wickets in a spell that turned the game well and truly in Australia’s favour. It was fitting he took the final wicket. 10

So, as an Aussie fan, this moment is one to savour. Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and the bowlers should be proud of their efforts, led well by Tim Paine in overcoming the disappointment of Headingley.

However, England, like Australia, need to look at some changes after this series. Joe Root looks burdened by the captaincy, and it is better for everyone if he can just focus on his batting. At 28, Root is now heading into the peak years as a Test batsman; England need to let him focus on that.

SL vs NZ 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11

SL vs NZ 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11. Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 3rd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

No one could have possibly imagined that a T20I series could cause such a span of injuries that both sides have had to scramble for replacements.

Indeed, it is a real shame for Sri Lanka that the series is over. With the likes of Martin Guptill injured, Ross Taylor just about fit, Tom Bruce carrying a knock and Lockie Ferguson ruled out, they could have really fancied themselves to take the series, despite their own injury worries. Instead, they will be fighting for pride, looking to avoid their fourth straight T20I loss at home: only once before have they lost so many in a row in their own den.

Key to a Sri Lanka win

Sri Lanka have had their moments. However, it is has been in the crunch periods where they have fallen short. Finishing was their strong suit in the opening T20I, but a let down in the following game, reaching 161/9 after being well-placed at 108/2 in the 14th over. In what has eluded them so often in limited overs cricket over the past four years, Sri Lanka need a complete batting display, beginning with more from Kusal Perera, who has underwhelmed in New Zealand’s tour. Can the likes of Avishka Fernando and Niroshan Dickwella build on their efforts from the last game, with the likes of Dasun Shanaka and Isuru Udana finishing well?

SL vs NZ 3rd T20I: Will Lasith Malinga have a better outing?

Also, one more high-performing bowler would have been enough to take out the first T20I. Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan and Isuru Udana took 4/70 combined in 11 overs, which is significant when you have Lasith Malinga up your sleeve in a 160+ chase. However, the remaining bowlers couldn’t quite have the same impact, again putting onus on Sri Lanka’s ability to deliver as a unit in the field.

Key to a New Zealand win

Colin de Grandhomme has been outstanding for New Zealand in recent times. His strong form has held his side in good stead, delivering crucial middle order runs in the absence of Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor last game. However, can New Zealand get more out of their top order? Colin Munro, in his favoured format, is yet to fire, and there is no better time than a pressure-less third T20I to deliver. With players in good form in the middle order, a strong powerplay from New Zealand can be huge.

Also, Tim Southee has really warmed to the captaincy. His bowling in white-ball cricket has left a lot to be desired over the past 18 months, but this series has seen him find a new lease of life. With 4/38 in eight overs combined this series, the likes of Seth Rance and Scott Kuggeleijn – both in the wickets last time out – have a crucial role to play in supporting their captain and spinners.

Pitch and conditions

Rain is a possibility but the forecast of mostly cloudy makes a full game likely. Another even battle between bat and ball should be expected on a Pallekele surface that has had something in it for everyone.

Possible Playing 11

Kusal Mendis’ leg injury from his collision with Shehan Jayasuriya could even rule him out of the upcoming Pakistan tour. Jayasuriya is also likely to miss out through injury in this one. Also, pace bowling all-rounder Lahiru Madushanka could get the nod for a seamers’ position.

Sri Lanka: 1. Danushka Gunathilaka, 2. Kusal Perera (wk), 3. Avishka Fernando, 4. Niroshan Dickwella, 5. Dasun Shanaka, 6. Wanindu Hasaranga, 7. Isuru Udana, 8. Lahiru Madushanka 9. Akila Dananjaya, 10. Lasith Malinga (c), 11. Lakshan Sandakan

Martin Guptill is out for New Zealand. Tom Bruce is in doubt with his own leg knock. Hamish Rutherford has been flown in as cover should Tom Bruce fail a fitness test. However, Ross Taylor is set to go after missing the second T20I.

New Zealand: 1. Hamish Rutherford/Tom Bruce, 2. Colin Munro, 3. Tim Seifert (wk), 4. Colin de Grandhomme, 5. Ross Taylor, 6. Daryl Mitchell, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Scott Kuggeleijn, 9. Seth Rance, 10. Tim Southee (c), 11. Ish Sodhi

Stats and Facts

  • Lasith Malinga remains one away from 100 wickets in T20Is.
  • Ross Taylor batting at number five and six in T20Is: average: 38.18, strike rate: 131.39. His numbers are very similar in T20Is in Sri Lanka, averaging 39.28 and striking at 135.
  • Sri Lanka have now lost their past five T20Is to New Zealand.
  • Colin Munro’s longest streak without reaching 20 in T20Is is three matches. He is currently on a run of two. Big one coming?

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Test Preview Dream & MyTeam11. BAN vs AFG Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

As pace headlined India’s big win in West Indies and continues to do so in the ongoing Ashes series, spin is expected to take centre stage in Chattogram.

One of international cricket’s fledgling rivalries reignites with the first ever Test between the two nations. Bangladesh are set to play their first Test since their difficult New Zealand tour, and their first home Test since beating West Indies 2-0 nearly a year ago. Afghanistan are set to play their third, after winning their last match against Ireland in March. With spin to play a key role, the toss could be crucial, as both sides possess fine spin options.

Who will take out bragging rights?

Key to a Bangladesh win

Bangladesh have enjoyed greater success in Tests in recent times, especially at home. The shift from flat pitches to turning ones over the past five years has benefited the home side, winning Tests against the likes of Australia, England and West Indies. However, Afghanistan have the spinners to cause problems, so patience and discipline – often missing in Bangladeshi Test batting – has to be on show in grinding the Afghans down. With Tamim Iqbal on leave, eyes will be on Bangladesh’s experienced stars, along with how well the youngsters, including Shadman Islam, can perform.

Also, it is likely Bangladesh will play four spinners, including Shakib. The Bangladesh skipper, along with Nayeem Islam, Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took all 40 wickets in two Tests against West Indies last year. The pressure they build up on Afghanistan’s batsmen will be key, testing their opponents’ patience. Will the spinners force Afghanistan into get-out-of-jail shots to release the pressure?

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Test Preview Dream & MyTeam11. BAN vs AFG Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction
Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Test: Shakib will be key as always.

Key to an Afghanistan win

Afghanistan’s first Test against India in 2018 was a huge learning curve. The spinners, including now skipper Rashid Khan, bowled as if it were a one day game, struggling to build any sort of continuity. As Bangladesh is a team that often looks to hit its way out of trouble, a focus on bowling tight lines with assistance from the pitch can hold Afghanistan in fine stead. Couple this with Afghanistan potentially playing three wristspinners, and their occasional variations can prove mighty effective. So, it is up to Rashid Khan to employ good attacking fields to new batsmen.

However, the big question is how Afghanistan’s batting will cope with Bangladesh’s battery of wily spinners. The uncapped Ibrahim was a standout in Afghanistan A’s tour of Bangladesh last month, with 482 runs including a century and three fifties. Also, Afghanistan do possess a middle order capable of occupying the crease, as shown at times in the recent World Cup. The likes of Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Asghar Afghan and Mohammad Nabi will be tasked with building partnerships and ensuring Bangladesh don’t get on a roll with quick wickets.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Test Preview Dream & MyTeam11. BAN vs AFG Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction
Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Test: Big test for Rashid Khan as captain.

Pitch and conditions

Unfortunately, rain is forecast on all five days in Chattogram. The high humidity is likely to cause a few thunderstorms, with play set to be interrupted throughout the Test. In regards to the pitch, it is expected to turn from early in the Test.

Possible Playing 11

Tamim Iqbal’s absence means Soumya Sarkar could partner Shadman Islam at the top. Shakib Al Hasan will skipper the side, but reluctantly. Bangladesh need a future plan in this area.

Bangladesh: 1. Soumya Sarkar, 2. Shadman Islam, 3. Mominul Haque, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim, 5. Shakib Al Hasan (c), 6. Mahmudullah, 7. Liton Das (wk), 8. Mehidy Hasan, 9. Taijul Islam, 10. Nayeem Hasan, 11. Abu Jayed

Mohammad Shahzad, Wafadar Momand and Waqar Salamkheil are unavailable in Bangladesh. They could be replaced by Ibrahim Zadran, Zahir Khan and Qais Ahmed. This will certainly be a big test for Rashid Khan, leading Afghanistan in just their third Test.

Afghanistan: 1. Ihsanullah, 2. Ibrahim Zadran, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Hashmatullah Shahidi, 5. Asghar Afghan, 6. Mohammad Nabi, 7. Ikram Alikhil (wk), 8. Rashid Khan (c), 9. Yamin Ahmadzai, 10. Qais Ahmed, 11. Zahir Khan

Stats and Facts

  • This Test will not count to the World Test Championship.
  • Mominul Haque in Chattogram: 15 innings, 1,001 runs, average: 83.42.
  • Taijul Islam needs one wicket to become the third Bangladeshi to achieve 100 Test wickets after Mohammad Rafique and Shakib Al Hasan.
  • Afghanistan won their last Test, vs Ireland back in March.

Match Prediction

If the weather is kind enough to allow a result, it could very well be that the team who bats first will win. Bangladesh lost heavily to Zimbabwe at home last year when asked to bat second, and I feel Afghanistan also need the security of a first innings score on a turning pitch.

Ashes 2019: England vs Australia 4th Test Preview Dream11

Ashes 2019: England vs Australia 4th Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. ENG vs AUS 4th Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

10 days have passed since one of the greatest Tests ever. Like the players, we as fans have had the chance to recoup, recover and reset for take four in an Ashes series already compared to the great 2005 series.

So, what on earth does Manchester have in store for us? England, courtesy of Ben Stokes, who is having one of the most incredible summers anyone can remember, are alive by the skin of their teeth. Their memorable win in Headingley was their first win in nine Ashes Tests, of which they hope will be a springboard for more success as they look to regain the Urn. They can certainly hope so, given they have not lost a Test at Old Trafford since 2001. Changes have been made, including one final attempt to help Jason Roy find his feet at Test level. Will England make it 2-1 with one Test to play?

Changes are also the case for Australia. Steve Smith, the best Test batsman in the world, is back, just as he returns to the number one ranking. His presence is huge, giving Australia that all-important resistance they still lacked in Headingley. Usman Khawaja, captain in Australia’s tour game in Derbyshire, has made way, placing pressure on Marcus Harris to ensure he performs. But, there is no pressure greater than that on Tim Paine, who was centre of Australia’s horror hour that meant the Ashes are still up for grabs. Australia still have two chances to retain it, but the time is now.

Key to an England win

“There is still ample time to get him out”, replied a determined Jofra Archer, after Steve Smith claimed he doesn’t quite have the wood over him yet. It sets us up for another riveting battle. A battle you’d want to fast forward time for, all part of an Ashes series that is simmering up beautifully. Indeed, the Archer-Smith battle will be key, but how England continue to expose Australia’s batting lineup will be just as important. It was Marnus Labuschagne who stood tallest in Headingley for Australia, and his form also makes him a crucial wicket. With inconsistency rife throughout Australia’s lineup – including the openers, England’s attack – that has a balance of control and fire, can look to pick up crucial little victories throughout the Test.

Ashes 2019: England vs Australia 4th Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction. ENG vs AUS 4th Test Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction
Image: AP/Twitter. England vs Australia 4th Test: Bring it on.

But, which England will show up with the bat? Will it be the one who folded for 67 all out? Or the one who dug in to achieve their highest ever successful fourth innings run chase in history? England’s commitment to wearing Australia down – the kind Joe Root wants to achieve again – will be vital as Australia continue with their four-man attack strategy. Joe Denly, now an opener, needs to combine well with Rory Burns who has batted for well over 500 balls this series. If Joe Root and Jason Roy can build on a good start, Ben Stokes becomes even more of a worry for Australia, along with the likes of Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow.

Key to an Australia win

Runs for Steve Smith are vital. Indeed, had it not been for Smith in the opening two Tests, Australia would have found themselves 2-0 down. However, this places onus on the others to deliver more. Marnus Labuschagne, with three consecutive half centuries, has been superb, but who else will put their hand up for the long haul? Who will be willing to withstand periods of sustained pressure, giving an hour or two to England’s bowlers when needed? David Warner did that on the opening day in Headingley, but his duck in the second dig made it five single figure scores in six innings this series. Marcus Harris, of whom the selectors decided to keep in the side ahead of Usman Khawaja, also has to repay the faith. Indeed, Australia’s batting recovery starts at the top, with the middle order tasked with outplaying England’s.

England vs Australia 4th Test: Steve Smith will be key again for Australia.

Also, the makeup of Australia’s bowling attack is still in the air. Will Mitchell Starc finally get a run? If so, he will be required to hit his straps straight away, placing pressure on England through pace. Australia’s bowlers, after dismissing England for 67 in Headingley, had periods of inconsistency in the second innings which ultimately cost them the match. How Australia fare with the new ball is key, and Josh Hazlewood in particular has been superb. Can Australia place immediate pressure on Joe Root and Jason Roy? How well will they stick to their guns when England’s middle order looks to get on top? Along with the seamers, Nathan Lyon has a crucial role to play after a tough final day at Headingley, on what is expected to be a dry Old Trafford pitch.

Pitch and conditions

The pitch at Old Trafford is said to be mostly free of grass, with a few little cracks. Surely, despite the overcast conditions, the team winning the toss would bat first to get the chance to bowl last on it. In terms of the weather, Friday looks most threatening in terms of rain, with a chance of afternoon showers on days one and two.

Australia have named their 12-man squad. Usman Khawaja has been dropped, and either Peter Siddle or Mitchell Starc will take the final spot.

Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Marcus Harris, 3. Marnus Labuschagne, 4. Steven Smith, 5. Travis Head, 6. Matthew Wade, 7. Tim Paine (c & wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Peter Siddle/Mitchell Starc, 10. Josh Hazlewood, 11. Nathan Lyon

Stats and Facts

  • England are unbeaten in Tests at Old Trafford since 2001 (11 Tests).
  • However, England’s last Ashes win at Old Trafford was in 1981.
  • Australia’s loss at Headingley was their first in Ashes cricket since 2015 (eight match unbeaten run).
  • No English ground has a higher scoring rate in Tests than Old Trafford in the past 10 years: 3.46.
  • Steve Smith and Pat Cummins are ranked number one batsman and bowler in Tests respectively. The last time Australia had both the number one batsman and bowler was in March 2006 (Ricky Ponting and Glenn McGrath).

Match Prediction

Weather is set to play a part, but not as much as Lord’s (hopefully). I predict there will be a result, and given it remains to be seen how Australia recover after the Headingley horror, England start favourites. Head says England in this one. Heart says Australia still have plenty going for them.

Jamaica. Take two in the series after a very one-sided first Test. What could we expect?

Well, what we got early was Sunil Gavaskar trying to speak like a Jamaican on commentary on the first morning. After a 318-run pummelling in the first Test, one might have had to wonder if that was to be the main highlight this match could provide.

West Indies v India 2nd Test Player Ratings: What a time to be alive.

Indeed, like the first match, superb individual achievements headlined the Test, with India winning very comfortably. Hanuma Vihari put to bed any questions about who should bat six, turning the attention of Rohit Sharma tragics to the opening slot instead. Jasprit Bumrah then produced another spell of magic, becoming the third India bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket.

For West Indies, joy was at a premium. Jason Holder and Kemar Roach led the way with fighting efforts right through the Test, and Rahkheem Cornwall held his own on debut.

This article will go through each player and rate them out of 10.

West Indies

Kraigg Brathwaite: Stop the press. Kraigg Brathwaite’s 10 might have stunned many in the first innings, comfortably the top scorer in the top five. However, when an opening batsman’s highlight is dismissing the opposition’s number nine who just smashed a half century, things don’t look very rosy. 2

Jason Campbell: Suited to the limited overs formats. You get the feeling Jason Campbell will offer too many chances in Test cricket. Like Jason Roy for England. 2

Darren Bravo: A real shame that Darren Bravo was victim of delayed concussion. He looked good in the second innings, but a big score wasn’t to be. 4

Shamarh Brooks: Excellent fight in the second innings gave his team and fans something to cheer about. However, his lackadaisical effort in getting back to his crease right after making 50 was like taking candy off a baby. 6

Roston Chase: Victim of Jasprit Bumrah’s hat-trick ball. To be fair, there was not much he could do about such an outstanding inswinger. His luck didn’t improve in the second dig, given out on a marginal LBW call. 3

Jason Holder: It was Jason Holder v India for a significant amount of the first two days. His superb five-for came at a cost, looking weary as he played a shot he’d never want to see again. All-in-all, he again showed why he’s rated the number one all-rounder in Tests right now. 9

Jermaine Blackwood: The second concussion replacement in Test history. Like the first – Marnus Labuschagne – Jermaine Blackwood showed fight that some of his teammates could learn from. 6

Shimron Hetmyer: One of those teammates is this guy. Four slips and a short extra cover were waiting for Shimron to play a loose drive in the second innings, after riding his luck in the first. He obliged, providing Ishant Sharma with a lovely little early Christmas gift. “Hetmyer needs some sense knocked into him” were the words on commentary. No one can disagree. 3

West Indies v India 2nd Test Player Ratings: Fair.

Jahmar Hamilton: Last minute debut for Jahmar Hamilton with Shai Hope ruled out through injury. He was pretty safe behind the stumps, but that’s where the joy ended. 3

Rahkeem Cornwall: West Indies need a good spinner in Test cricket, and they have one. Cornwall should have played in Antigua, and showed why with a consistent effort right throughout this Test on a pitch not offering too much turn. 6.5

Kemar Roach: Deserved many more wickets in the first innings after bowling his heart out. Roach picked up three second innings dismissals – including Virat Kohli first ball – but it was all too late for the Windies. 7

Shannon Gabriel: If bowling half-vollies was an Olympic sport, Shannon Gabriel would be the record Gold Medal holder. He struggled for consistency in the heat, which places emphasis on his fitness. 2

KL Rahul: His 63-ball six, when India started their second innings 299 ahead, shows Rahul is concerned about his spot in the side. Also, he needs to rectify his tendency of leaving the ball too late. After a series of missed opportunities, should India stick with KL Rahul? 2

Mayank Agarwal: Promising first innings fifty. Like the case in Australia, though, Agarwal had the chance to go big. A solid outing, nonetheless. 6

Cheteshwar Pujara: More was expected of Cheteshwar Pujara after his magnificent series in Australia at the turn of the year. 4

Virat Kohli: India thumping West Indies might not grab the attention of other teams around the world. However, Kohli’s two dismissals showed where sides need to bowl to India’s great batsman – the coveted fourth stump line. He was cantering to a first innings century, before Holder got him with a beauty. A second innings duck is as rare as they come for India’s now most successful Test captain both overall and overseas. 7

Ajinkya Rahane: Loves the Windies, does Rahane. A very solid series that he will need to build on next month against South Africa at home, where he has not enjoyed the best of times in his Test career. 7

Hanuma Vihari: Normal people might like enjoying their favourite song on repeat. Me? I’d like to watch Hanuma Vihari’s straight drives on repeat. He dedicated his first Test century to his late father, which was a great touch along with justifying the selectors’ decision to pick him at six. His second innings fifty was icing on the cake. 10

West Indies v India 2nd Test Player Ratings: A great game for Vihari.

Rishabh Pant: Batted with great maturity on the opening evening, and it was a shame from India’s perspective he was out first ball on day two. Pant took some fine catches behind the stumps – the highlight being an inside edge off Rahkeem Cornwall, diving full length to his left to grasp it. 7

Ravindra Jadeja: Apart from giving fans and commentators near heart attacks with his front foot no balls, Jadeja had another solid outing. 7

Ishant Sharma: “We have an opening conundrum?” asked Ishant post match. “Put me there.” His first innings half century was the stuff of dreams, making the Windies pay for missing two golden run out opportunities. His controlled bowling once again highlighted how much he has improved in the past few years. 8

Mohammed Shami: Fell below Ishant Sharma in the batting order, and showed why with a duck. But, his 150 Test wickets indicate more the value he provides to this India team. 7

Jasprit Bumrah: Freak of nature. Need I say more? Yes, here. 10

So, there we have it. A very comprehensive win for India over West Indies once again, stretching their unbeaten run over the Caribbean men to 23 Tests, dating back to 2002. India now lead the World Test Championship table with 120 points, while the Windies are glad this series is over.

SL vs NZ 2nd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11. Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2nd T20I Preview Dream11 & MyTeam11 Prediction

Pallekele was rocking and the pitch was turning. Sri Lanka’s T20I fortunes, haunted by a lack of success in their past 10 matches, could just get the kick it needed in front of a bumper crowd. However, missed opportunities and big overs were costly, as New Zealand’s calmness came up trumps in a closely fought opening T20I.

The series is on the line for the home side, who need Lasith Malinga to lead from the front as the entrusted skipper just over a year out from the World T20. For New Zealand, a T20I series win to go with a Test win in foreign conditions might send them home quite satisfied.

Key to a Sri Lanka win

Sri Lanka did a lot of things right on Sunday. One was how they used Kusal Mendis, tasking him with opening the batting, where all five of his T20I fifties have now been scored from. Their finishing, courtesy of Dasun Shanaka and Isuru Udana, was of the highest order, lifting Sri Lanka to a very competitive 170+. This was without Kusal Perera or Avishka Fernando firing, which presents a world of opportunity for Sri Lanka in this match.

However, Sri Lanka’s bowling and fielding was a let down. Granted, the ball was slippery, but seasoned international cricketers should be able to execute better in key situations. Kasun Rajitha, if fortunate enough to get another chance, has to limit bowling both sides of the wicket. Dasun Shanaka, after juggling a catch to dismiss Martin Guptill, then dropped a crucial one off Ross Taylor. Lasith Malinga, who started so well, ended with 15 off the penultimate over to all but end the game. If the Sri Lankans are to level the series, they have to build better on good periods of play, given they had New Zealand in quite some trouble early in the chase on Sunday.

SL vs NZ 2nd T20I Preview: Malinga will be a threat again.

Key to a New Zealand win

It was vintage Ross Taylor. Powerful slog sweeps, delicate leg glances and high intensity batting gives New Zealand’s middle order a very steely look. As their middle order insurance, Taylor at five can give the top order – who were poor last time out – the freedom to go very hard right away. The question here, though, is whether the likes of Colin Munro can overcome the Malinga threat, and whether Martin Guptill and Tim Seifert can find greater fluency. With Colin de Grandhomme in fine touch, closely followed by the capable Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner, New Zealand can look to win all stages of the innings.

However, despite the victory, it was far from perfect for New Zealand. Lockie Ferguson’s thumb injury has reduced their squad to just 13, which means they might stick with Seth Rance. Rance, who went for 58 in four wicketless overs on Sunday, struggled to bowl in accordance with the conditions. With a team effort needed to stem Sri Lanka’s attacking lineup, New Zealand’s lesser experienced bowlers need to work well with their more experienced options, given the likes of Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner were excellent last time out.

Pitch and conditions

The Pallekele pitch had something in it for everyone on Sunday. Turn, some bounce for the seamers and big hitting were on the menu in an exciting contest. A similar pitch is expected in this one, with a rain threat looming, too. The team who wins the toss might want to bowl first, as bowling second looked challenging with the wet ball.

Possible Playing 11

Sri Lanka shouldn’t make too many changes. One they may make is Kasun Rajitha out for another seamer – perhaps Lahiru Kamara.

Sri Lanka: 1. Kusal Mendis, 2. Kusal Perera (wk), 3. Avishka Fernando, 4. Niroshan Dickwella, 5. Shehan Jayasuriya, 6. Dasun Shanaka, 7. Wanindu Hasaranga, 8. Isuru Udana, 9. Akila Dananjaya, 10. Lasith Malinga (c), 11. Kasun Rajitha/Lahiru Kamara

Lockie Ferguson’s injury means New Zealand might stick with Seth Rance after a tough outing. An option they do have is replacing the seamer with Todd Astle, but two legspinners in these conditions is risky.

New Zealand: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Colin Munro, 3. Tim Seifert (wk), 4. Colin de Grandhomme, 5. Ross Taylor, 6. Daryl Mitchell, 7. Mitchell Santner, 8. Scott Kuggeleijn, 9. Seth Rance, 10. Tim Southee (c), 11. Ish Sodhi

Stats and Facts

  • Lasith Malinga is now the all-time leading wicket taker in T20Is. He is on 99 wickets.
  • Ross Taylor batting at number five and six in T20Is: average: 38.18, strike rate: 131.39. His numbers are very similar in T20Is in Sri Lanka, averaging 39.28 and striking at 135.
  • Sri Lanka have lost nine of their past 10 T20Is. They have also lost their past four to New Zealand.

Match Prediction

The first game was so difficult to predict. Indeed, it turned out to be a close match.

The second should also be a close one, with the chasing team perhaps to be favoured. New Zealand’s reliability might just pip Sri Lanka’s inconsistency again.
