Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11

New year, same Hurricanes?

Hobart Hurricanes have been the standout side in BBL08. They have won four games out of four, overcoming a few challenges along the way, and are now well placed for a semi finals finish. However, a couple of talented sides are starting to find their feet, so the Hurricanes can’t start to take it a little easy.

One of the sides on the improve is Sydney Sixers. They are on a winning streak of two after an indifferent start to BBL08, headlined by a confidence-boosting win against Brisbane Heat on New Year’s Day. There is arguably no bigger challenge right now than playing the Hurricanes in Hobart, so can the Sixers go to another level?

Key to a Hobart Hurricanes win

Hobart Hurricanes’ batting was likely to hold them in good stead in BBL08, with their bowling a concern. However, the bowlers have been key in helping the Hurricanes sit pretty at the top of the table. Riley Meredith has been a shining light, along with the improved Clive Rose and versatile D’Arcy Short. James Faulkner has proven to be a good pickup so far, and will be key at the top along with Jofra Archer in targeting a Sixers’ top order that has largely struggled in BBL08.

Also, will Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short continue their strong form at the top? The Hurricanes’ bowling has helped them win games, but there is little doubt that these two have been central to their excellent start. A key to victory will be another good start, followed by a strong middle order headlined by George Bailey and Ben McDermott, who are dangerous players.

Key to a Sydney Sixers win

New Year, new Sydney Sixers. The top order finally put on a good show, which was crucial to victory against Brisbane Heat. Moises Henriques played his first substantial innings of BBL08, with good support from Justin Avendano. These two will be key again for the Sixers, along with the out of form Joe Denly and in form Jordan Silk, who both need to contribute against an attack that looks far more composed than the struggling Brisbane Heat.

Also, can the Sixers breakthrough Hobart Hurricanes’ in form top order? D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade are second and fourth respectively on the BBL08 runscoring charts, and the Sixers need to limit the damage as much as possible. Steve O’Keefe will be key in the powerplay overs, along with Ben Dwarshuis, Tom Curran and Sean Abbott. Can the Sixers pick up a really good win away from home against the league leaders?

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11 Prediction
Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11: Tom Curran has been strong in BBL08

Possible Playing XIs

Hobart Hurricanes have named an unchanged squad. They will likely play the same XI that thrashed Perth Scorchers.

Hobart Hurricanes XI: 1. Matthew Wade (c & wk), 2. D’Arcy Short, 3. Alex Doolan, 4. Ben McDermott, 5. George Bailey, 6. Simon Milenko, 7. James Faulkner, 8. Johan Botha, 9. Clive Rose, 10. Jofra Archer, 11. Riley Meredith

Sydney Sixers have also named an unchanged squad, and will also likely stick with the same team that beat Brisbane Heat.

Sydney Sixers XI: 1. Joe Denly, 2. Justin Avendano, 3. Moises Henriques, 4. Daniel Hughes, 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Josh Phillipe (wk), 7. Tom Curran, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Steve O’Keefe, 10. Ben Dwarshuis, 11. Ben Manenti

Dream11 Prediction

Two sides in good form. Below is my Dream11 Team with a few pointers.

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11
  • Matthew Wade is in fantastic form (fourth highest run scorer in BBL08).
  • D’Arcy Short is proving to be a fine all-round option. He is my captain.
  • Moises Henriques hit form, and Justin Avendano provided good support vs the Heat. He provides good value.
  • James Faulkner and Tom Curran are good picks as the all-rounders.
  • All four of Jofra Archer, Riley Meredith, Steve O’Keefe and Sean Abbott have been in the wickets in BBL08. Archer in particular is due a couple of wickets.

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Hobart Hurricanes 4, Sydney Sixers 4
  • Hobart Hurricanes have won all four of their games this season.
  • Sydney Sixers have won their last two matches.
  • D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade are both in the top four run getters in BBL08.

Prediction

This promises to be a cracking matchup.

Sydney Sixers have shown their quality in the last two matches, but Hobart Hurricanes at home might just get the job done. I’m expecting a close game, with the result to just go in favour of the Hurricanes.

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview + Dream11

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview + Dream11

Preview co-written by Abdul Shakoor – @AbduShakoor_

The scene is set for the second Test between the green-machines at beautiful Newlands. Pakistan will have to find a way to counter South Africa’s magnificent pace attack. When they were on 101/1 in the second innings in Centurion, trying to extend the lead, the middle order once again bewildered and collapsed. It resulted in a lead of 148 which was not enough against side with Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla, who found his form at the right time.

However, Pakistan’s bowling has been in a great spell of late. Mohammad Amir found his groove in the first Test, and Mohammad Abbas will be fit for this one. South Africa, whilst 1-0 up in the series, can improve with the bat. Can Pakistan avoid going 2-0 down?

Key to a South Africa win

Hashim Amla has found his form back after a dip, scoring a beautiful and composed fifty for the Proteas at Centurion. He’s been accompanied by a brave left-hander, Dean Elgar, who after copping some blows showed his guts and passion. Those two again hold the key for a good score, along with Aiden Markram and Faf du Plessis who were well below par in Centurion.

Du Plessis, alongside his opposite number, booked a pair but it didn’t affect his team much because of a steady middle order, courtesy Temba Bavuma and de Bruyn (who might be out of this one). They partnered really well which took the match in their favour.

With Vernon Philander returning, South Africa has been tempted to go with a full pace attack – too hot to handle. Duanne Olivier might look like his Protea-fellow, Merchant de Lange, but was not, by any means, expensive. He utilised his height to go through the Pakistan’s batting lineup and bagged some crucial scalps. Rabada and Steyn too are a great combo to have and can really go in tandem. So their bowling attack will be very crucial and can prove hefty. Will Keshav Maharaj miss out?

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview + Dream11
South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview + Dream11: Duanne Olivier was outstanding.

Key to a Pakistan win

Pakistan’s batting has been their biggest problem. Sometimes, the bowling can cancel it out, but it’s very hard to win if your middle order is weak. Pakistan’s middle order has to step up the game and the under pressure Sarfraz has to deliver apart from his vocal cords. Azhar Ali got out on a double-minded sway at a bumper. He is a good middle order batsman and has to play an innings of authority, along with Asad Shafiq, also under pressure. Haris Sohail has been ruled out of the series with the injury and Sarfraz has confirmed the same top six for the second encounter.

Pakistan’s bowling will be enlightened by the addition of Mohammad Abbas who has been a great find for Pakistan. With his inclusion in the second Test, Pakistan might look to go similar to the opposition – a full pace attack – as spin might not bore fruit. Amir and Abbas at the top of the bowling hold the key for Pakistan to help getting some early wickets. And, without a doubt, the young Shaheen will come into play at the first bowling change.

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview + Dream11: Sarfraz Ahmed is under pressure.

Predicted Playing XIs

Duanne Olivier and Vernon Philander will both play. However, will South Africa go with an all out pace attack? Dale Steyn, Keshav Maharaj or Theunis de Bruyn could possibly miss out.

South Africa XI: 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Theunis de Bruyn, 5 Faf du Plessis (c), 6 Temba Bavuma, 7 Quinton de Kock (wk), 8 Vernon Philander/Dale Steyn, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Keshav Maharaj, 11 Duanne Olivier

Mohammad Abbas returns for Pakistan, and either Hasan Ali or Yasir Shah could be the one to make way. Sarfraz Ahmed has confirmed the same top six will be in action.

Pakistan XI: 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Shan Masood, 4 Azhar Ali, 5 Asad Shafiq, 6 Babar Azam, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 8 Mohammad Amir, 9 Yasir Shah, 10 Shaheen Afridi 11 Mohammad Abbas

Dream11 Prediction

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Preview + Dream11

Stats and Facts

  • Vernon Philander, apart from his bowling abilities, has scored 289 runs for South Africa in 2018. He needs one wicket to reach 50 at Newlands, where he averages 16.55 with a strike rate of 35.10.
  • Pakistan have lost each of their three Tests at Newlands.
  • Pakistan have lost three of their last four Tests.

Prediction

You’d be very brave to pick Pakistan in this one.

They look a side under pressure, and I expect their poor record in South Africa to continue. South Africa to win.

Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers Preview + Dream11

Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers Preview + Dream11

One sluggish pitch to another? Not quite.

BBL08 has been filled with slow pitches, and the move from Marvel Stadium to Geelong might be excellent timing for this one.

Melbourne Renegades meet the side they have already beaten in BBL08. Their win over the Strikers in Adelaide before Christmas was impressive, but they crumbled badly against the Sydney Sixers on a Marvel Stadium pitch where strike rotation was challenging but crucial. Then, they suffered a big loss on New Year’s Day against the Melbourne Stars. Will the Renegades get back to winning ways?

Adelaide Strikers indeed got back to winning ways after two straight losses. Their victory against Sydney Thunder on New Year’s Eve, while not perfect, was much needed to get their season back on track. Alex Carey and Colin Ingram were back in the runs, and the bowlers held their nerve in the final overs which was encouraging. Will they get revenge over the Renegades?

Key to a Melbourne Renegades win

The Renegades’ batting has been the central cause of their demise in their two defeats. The top order has been inconsistent, with the allrounders required to get the side out of tricky situations. The likes of Tim Ludeman, Cameron White and Tom Cooper are yet to fire like fans know they can, and the time is now to arrest the slide. A strong platform paves the way for a strong middle order to take advantage.

Also, the Renegades seamers, expect Usman Khan Shinewari, were ineffective at the MCG. They need to show their Marvel Stadium form in Geelong to get the better of the Strikers top order. With the likes of Kane Richardson, Jack Wildermuth and Dan Christian showing glimpses of good form in BBL08, fans can hope for an improved showing.

Key to an Adelaide Strikers win

Rashid Khan is set to play against Melbourne Renegades. It is another example of his strong character, given the sad passing of his father just a few days ago. He was effective against the Thunder, supporting the likes of Peter Siddle, Michael Neser and Ben Laughlin really well. Will the Strikers attack cause more pain for the Renegades batting on what could be a slow track?

Also, of equal importance, can the Strikers batting lineup deal with the conditions effectively? Alex Carey and Colin Ingram, along with Jake Weatherald, will be key at the top, but can the middle order play with greater freedom than on display vs Thunder? Strike rotation will be crucial in Geelong, and it will help to have at least one set batsman at the crease throughout the innings.

Predicted Playing XIs

Melbourne Renegades have brought Joe Mennie into the 13-man squad.

Melbourne Renegades XI: 1. Sam Harper, 2. Mackenzie Harvey, 3. Cameron White, 4. Tom Cooper (c), 5. Mohammad Nabi, 6. Daniel Christian, 7. Beau Webster, 8. Jack Wildermuth, 9. Cameron Boyce, 10. Kane Richardson, 11. Usman Khan Shinwari

Peter Siddle is unavailable due to commitments with Australian Test team. Wes Agar comes into the Adelaide 13-man squad.

Adelaide Strikers XI: 1. Alex Carey (wk), 2. Jake Weatherald, 3. Colin Ingram (c), 4. Matthew Short, 5. Jono Wells, 6. Jake Lehmann, 7. Michael Neser, 8. Rashid Khan, 9. Cameron Valente, 10. Ben Laughlin, 11. Billy Stanlake

Dream11 Prediction

A good batting pitch is expected in Geelong, similar to the Sri Lanka T20I a couple of years back. Below is my Dream11 Team with a few pointers.

Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers Preview + Dream11 Prediction
Melbourne Renegades vs Adelaide Strikers Preview + Dream11
  • Mackenzie Harvey has made a good start to his BBL08 campaign and offers good value.
  • Cameron White is due for runs, just as Ben Laughlin is due for wickets, especially at the death.
  • Rashid Khan is my VC, Alex Carey C.
  • Dan Christian has top scored for the Renegades twice in the last three innings.
  • Top order and middle order options key on what is expected to be a decent track.

Stats and Facts

  • Both these sides have already met in BBL08. Melbourne Renegades won in Adelaide.
  • Adelaide Strikers have won four of their last six matches against the Renegades.
  • Rashid Khan has taken 13 wickets in his last seven T20 matches.

Prediction

Adelaide Strikers to win off the back of a strong top order showing.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Preview + Dream11

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Preview + Dream11

New year, same old ODI problems for Sri Lanka?

They begin 2019 with a tough test, away to New Zealand. The Black Caps last played a home ODI in March last year, and will be raring to go with the World Cup fast approaching. They have won eight of 11 ODIs at home to Sri Lanka since the beginning of 2015, and with a squad many consider capable of reaching the World Cup Semi Finals, the time is now to flex their muscle.

Will 2019 prove to be a source of comfort for Sri Lanka in the ODI format? Their last two years have been nothing short of horrendous, losing 33 of 44 completed matches. Worse, the last time they won a live ODI (non-dead rubber) was nearly a year ago, where they beat Bangladesh in a Tri-Series Final also involving Zimbabwe. Lasith Malinga is at the ODI helm, and has a big role in getting Sri Lanka off the mat. Can they make a good start to 2019?

Key to a New Zealand win

New Zealand, perhaps luckily due to rain, drew their most recent ODI series against Pakistan. However, there were plenty of positives to take from that series. Ross Taylor continued his magnificent run of ODI form over the last few years, and will be key here, along with Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson at the top. One player who hasn’t quite decoded the ODI format is Colin Munro, who is capable of providing a rapid start to help set the tone. Will New Zealand’s top order help set a strong platform for the middle order to launch?

Another significant positive was the form of Lockie Ferguson. Ferguson took 11 wickets in three ODIs at 12.82 in the UAE against Pakistan, and will be a massive threat to Sri Lanka’s uncertain lineup. Also, Matt Henry was in excellent form in red ball cricket in 2018, and could be called upon to make inroads to the Sri Lankan lineup, along with Trent Boult. Kane Williamson will be hoping that Ish Sodhi and Jimmy Neesham can bowl in the middle overs with Sri Lanka under the pump.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Preview + Dream11: Ross Taylor has been in fine form for New Zealand in ODIs over the last few years.

Key to a Sri Lanka win

A big problem for Sri Lanka in ODI Cricket is the regular loss of top order wickets. They suffered badly at the hands of South Africa and England in their most recent assignments, and in both those series, the middle order was left with big recovery jobs. Kusal Mendis had a good year in Tests in 2018, and will be key for the tourists here, along with the likes of Kusal Perera, Niroshan Dickwella and Thisara Perera, who all possess talent.

Also, can Sri Lanka get the better of New Zealand’s top order? Lasith Malinga is capable of early wickets, and if he can fire, that might just spur the team on. Dushmantha Chameera, Thisara Perera and Lakshan Sandakan are also capable of wickets, but must bowl with effective control as they can tend to go on the expensive side.

Predicted Playing XIs

Tim Seifert is set to make his ODI debut with Tom Latham rested for this series. Also, with Tim Southee not quite at his best in ODIs over the last couple of years, Matt Henry could be given a chance.

New Zealand XI: 1. Martin Guptill, 2. Colin Munro, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Henry Nicholls, 6. Tim Seifert (wk), 7. James Neesham, 8. Ish Sodhi, 9. Matt Henry/Tim Southee, 10. Trent Boult, 11. Lockie Ferguson.

Sri Lanka’s most in form batsman, Angelo Mathews, has succumbed to another hamstring injury. Now, Lasith Malinga and the team management will have to decide on a lineup that delivers the best result.

Sri Lanka XI: 1. Kusal Perera, 2. Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3. Sadeera Samarawickrama/Dinesh Chandimal, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Asela Gunaratne, 7 Dasun Shanaka, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Lakshan Sandakan, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Lasith Malinga (c)

  • Ross Taylor’s last four ODI scores in New Zealand: 181*, 10, 113, 59. He has averaged less than 55 just once in the last five calendar years.
  • Kusal Mendis is in good touch.
  • Colin Munro is capable of getting the Black Caps off to a flyer.
  • Lockie Ferguson is a good pick. Both Matt Henry and Tim Southee are risky options given only one is likely to get the nod.

  • This will be Lasith Malinga’s second ODI as captain.

Prediction

Mount Maunganui hosts an exciting New Zealand side looking to get its World Cup preparations in order.

They should be too good for Sri Lanka. I predict they will win off the back of strong top order performance.

Australia vs India 4th Test Preview + Dream11

Australia vs India 4th Test Preview + Dream11

“If India don’t win this series, they’ll never win in Australia.”

This statement held true at the start of the series, and it undoubtedly holds true now. Virat Kohli’s men were so dominant at the MCG that anything other than an India win in Sydney will be a surprise. However, both sides have made changes to their squads, and a big key will be how well the replacement players justify their selection.

Australia’s selections at times this series has mirrored some of their batting efforts. Yes, it is slim pickings on the domestic scene right now, but when two players – Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell – average over 40, they should be in the side. Nevertheless, there is a series to save, and a record to upkeep, so the Australians have to put in a much better showing than the Melbourne shocker.

India will indeed never get a better chance to win a series in Australia. They were dominant right through the Boxing Day Test, and even with a couple of changes, will be looking for the same efficiency. The toss could prove crucial in this Test, but they are capable of hurting Australia even if they bat second, such is the quality of their main performers. The two Sharma’s – Rohit and Ishant – are out, but India still have enough talent to deliver the goods. Will the drought finally end?

Key to an Australia win

The ICC rated the MCG pitch as “average”, but that could have easily been mistaken for Australia’s batting effort. Lack of belief and temperament was on show in the Boxing Day Test, highlighted by a dreadful 151 all out followed by eight double figure scores in the second innings for just the one half century.

Australia is crying out for a hundred. No player has scored a century yet in this series, which has been central to their demise in comparison to the strong Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. Usman Khawaja will likely open the batting with Aaron Finch said to be dropped, and has a good record in the position, on show in his excellent series in the UAE in October. He has been a disappointment, and must step up, along with Shaun Marsh, Marcus Harris and Travis Head, who have all shown promise without great substance. Also, can Marnus Labuschagne prove to be a great selection?

However, batting is not only the headache for Australia. Three of Australia’s bowling quartet averaged more than 40 against top six batsmen in 2018, with Pat Cummins the shining light. Cummins will be key again with bat and ball, but Australia needs greater impact from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who are under par at the moment. Can they get the ball swinging with both new and old ball on a pitch expected to take turn? Can Nathan Lyon repeat his heroics from Perth? What control can Marcus Labuschagne bowl with? Will it be the Test Australia’s bowlers get the better of India?

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is gone, but stopping India from winning their first series down under should be cause for huge motivation for Australia.

Key to an India win

The loss of Ishant Sharma, one of the most improved bowlers in the last two years, is a blow for India. However, Jasprit Bumrah as the leader of the attack is an exciting prospect for India, which is incredible to think given he made his Test debut just less than a year ago. He has been relentless, having the ball on a string, and finally rewarded with the huge wickets in Melbourne.

However, while Mohammed Shami has also been strong, the cohesiveness of India’s attack will come under the microscope. Umesh Yadav, poor in Perth, is in the 13-man squad. If he plays, he must provide much greater support. However, conditions have been very warm in Sydney in recent weeks, and will be warm again during the Test, which will assist the spinners. Ravi Ashwin is still a chance of playing, and his partnership with Ravindra Jadeja against a side suspect against spin is a good prospect for India. If Ashwin isn’t fit, is Kuldeep the better Yadav option?

Also, can India’s batting deliver one final strong showing? Cheteshwar Pujara has been India’s rock, with Virat Kohli also delivering runs in the last two Tests. These two will undoubtedly be key again, but like the bowling, can India put together a cohesive effort? KL Rahul is back in the squad and must provide a strong foil to the impressive Mayank Agarwal. Ajinkjya Rahane is still producing underwhelming results for a player of his class, and has to step up in a crucial game for India.

India have picked a 13-man squad for the Sydney Test. A decision on Ravichandran Ashwin will be made in the morning. If he is fit, expect him to partner Ravindra Jadeja. KL Rahul will likely replace Rohit Sharma, with Hanuma Vihari to move back to the middle order.

India XI: 1. Mayank Agarwal, 2. KL Rahul, 3. Cheteshwar Pujara, 4. Virat Kohli (c), 5. Ajinkya Rahane, 6. Hanuma Vihari, 7. Rishabh Pant (wk), 8. Ravindra Jadeja, 9. Ravichandran Ashwin/Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Mohammed Shami, 11. Jasprit Bumrah

  • Batting linchpins Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara make my side.
  • Usman Khawaja has a good record opening the batting, but his form is too shaky. Mayank Agarwal was excellent on debut in Melbourne. He and Harris offer good value.
  • Travis Head is Australia’s leading run scorer. Ravindra Jadeja is a must.
  • Pat Cummins (VC) plays as an all-round option. Nathan Lyon is important to have on a pitch expected to turn.
  • Also, the SCG pitch could help with reverse swing. Mohammed Shami is a dangerous exponent of this, and not much more needs to be said about the excellent Jasprit Bumrah.

Stats and Facts

  • India have never won a Test series in Australia.
  • Since the last Test of the Ashes series against England, only one Australia batsman has made a century (Usman Khawaja).
  • Jasprit Bumrah needs six wickets to beat Kapil Dev’s record for most wickets in a series by an Indian pacer in Australia.

Prediction

Ishant Sharma is a loss for India, but they still have the resources to take this out.

Heart hopes Australia win the toss, but, India is likelier of the two sides to hold their own if they lose the toss. India to win and take the series 3-1.

Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Preview + Dream11

Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Preview + Dream11

A team that has performed admirably so far vs. the tournament favourites that have not shown the form expected of them.

Sydney Thunder won their first two games of BBL08, and even though they have lost two in a row, have shown some promising signs. Their disappointing finishes against Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers respectively contributed significantly to the result, as they were right in both games. Can they hold their nerve against a side that is yet to get going?

It is incredible to think how poor Perth Scorchers have been. Their batting has been a mess, culminating in a very poor total against Hobart Hurricanes which was never near enough. They will encounter a slow pitch at Spotless Stadium, which will be a big challenge given the Thunder’s know-how of the conditions. Will the Scorchers get runs on the board and kickstart their BBL08 campaign?

Key to a Sydney Thunder win

As mentioned, Sydney Thunder’s finishes to games have been disappointing. However, can they cause further pain to a struggling Scorchers’ lineup so that there is no close finish? The likes of Daniel Sams, Sam Rainbird and Chris Green will be key in delivering powerplay wickets for the home side that pushes the Scorchers right back, just as the Hurricanes did. The Scorchers side is lacking form and confidence, and there is no better opportunity for the Thunder to pounce.

Also, how well will the Thunder batting lineup fare in comparison to the Scorchers? The Scorchers’ bowling lineup is their strength, but the Thunder possess Jos Buttler who will be keen for a big innings after a rare low score, along with Shane Watson and Joe Root who have still only threatened to go big. With Callum Ferguson hitting form and Daniel Sams still a dangerous hitter, the Thunder need a strong start in the powerplay to set a strong platform against a side struggling for consistency.

CricBlog Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Preview + Dream11 Cricket Blog Cricket Preview
Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Preview + Dream11: Jos Buttler will be crucial.

Key to a Perth Scorchers win

Being reduced to 19/4 within five overs won’t win you too many T20 games, and the Scorchers weren’t even close to winning against the Hurricanes. The big concern for the pre-tournament favourites is that this is a regular occurrence in BBL08. Their 107/8 against the Hurricanes joins their 92/3 in a win vs Adelaide Strikers, 147/8 in a loss vs Sydney Sixers and 107 in their tournament opener vs Melbourne Renegades. The onus is on the top order to step up, and the time is now so they don’t fall too far behind the pack.

Also, the battle between the Scorchers’ bowlers and Thunder batsmen in the powerplay could play a key role in the result. The Scorchers were unable to pick up an early wicket against the Hurricanes, and need to in Sydney to counter the Thunder’s dangerous top order. Jason Behrendhorff remains a key man, along with a Scorchers’ pace attack that has had their moments so far in BBL08. Also, Ashton Agar with his spin will be a key factor on what is expected to be a slow Spotless Stadium track.

Perth Scorchers have also named an unchanged squad. Usman Qadir could possibly get a look-in given the conditions favour spin bowlers.

Perth Scorchers XI: 1. Will Bosisto, 2. Michael Klinger, 3. Hilton Cartwright, 4. Ashton Turner (c), 5. Cameron Bancroft (wk), 6. Ashton Agar, 7. David Willey, 8. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9. Jhye Richardson/Usman Qadir, 10. AJ Tye, 11. Jason Behrendhorff

Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Preview + Dream11
  • Jos Buttler has looked in supreme form in BBL08. He is my captain. Cameron Bancroft has scored 75 and 72* in his last two matches against Thunder, but what form is he in now?
  • Hilton Cartwright looked in decent form against Hobart Hurricanes.
  • Home conditions can bring out good performances from Joe Root and Shane Watson.
  • Ashton Agar is my VC due to his all-round capabilities. Expect him to get some batting time. Daniel Sams continues to be a good option.
  • Jason Behrendhorff and AJ Tye are capable of wickets at all stages of the innings. Fawad Ahmed and Chris Green enjoy playing at Spotless Stadium.

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Sydney Thunder 2, Perth Scorchers 5
  • Sydney Thunder have hit 25 sixes in BBL08. Perth Scorchers have hit four.
  • Jos Buttler leads the BBL08 run scoring chart with 195. This is 100 more than any Scorchers player.

Prediction

Sydney Thunder won a thriller vs Perth Scorchers at Spotless Stadium last season.

They look the more confident side at the moment, despite conceding relatively large totals against the Hurricanes and Strikers. I will back the Thunder to win this game at home against a Perth Scorchers side that is looking anything but BBL08 Title favourites.

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11

Happy New Year!

2018 has gone. 2019 has come. One thing that remains the same is plenty of cricketing action.

Brisbane Heat will play just their third game of BBL08, and their first since December 22. With the race for the top four already looking tight, the time is now for the Heat to pick up their first win of the season. Their top heavy batting lineup, as well as lack of depth with their bowling, remains a concern, but they come up against a side that can’t stop collapsing at the top. Will it be a Happy New Year’s Day for Brisbane Heat on the Gold Coast?

Sydney Sixers picked up a huge win at Marvel Stadium vs Melbourne Renegades a few nights ago, but not before another top order collapse. The Sixers were reduced to 25/3, following on from their poor starts against Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars. However, their bowling is looking pretty good, and against a side that relies plenty on its top order, an opportunity for two straight wins awaits.

Key to a Brisbane Heat win

Brisbane Heat have had a good break over Christmas and Boxing Day, which has allowed them to “review the two games and look at some options for the Sixers” in the words of coach Daniel Vettori. James Pattinson returns, and will be key in targeting a Sixers’ top order that is misfiring. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Josh Lalor will also have a key role to play, and so too Ben Cutting and Mitch Swepson against a Sixers’ middle order that has proven capable of staging recoveries. With the bowling an achilles heel of the Heat for a few years, the time is now to deliver to get their BBL08 campaign up and running.

Of course, Chris Lynn will be of huge importance with the bat, but what support will he get? The Heat crumbled early in their last game against the Hurricanes, with Ben Cutting giving them hope of an unlikely victory with some fine late hitting. The dependence on individual brilliance continues to hurt the Heat, and if they lack partnerships again, it is hard to see them winning.

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11: Chris Lynn will be key once again

Key to a Sydney Sixers win

It is no longer a secret that the Sixers’ top order is out of touch. That they have won two games out of four given they have lost at least three powerplay wickets in three games is remarkable. They are playing with fire at the moment, given that T20 games are rarely won with poor batting powerplays, and need to start firing at the top to gain momentum in BBL08. Joe Denly hasn’t yet fired, young Jack Edwards hasn’t replicated NSW form and Moises Henriques hasn’t built on starts. Will this be the day?

Also, the Sixers have bowlers who can pick up regular wickets to hurt the Heat’s progress. Chris Lynn is a key man, and Steve O’Keefe will likely be used against him. However, can the Sixers get the better of the Heat’s potential game changers such as Brendon McCullum, Joe Burns and Ben Cutting? If so, the pressure on Lynn intensifies, and the Sixers have an excellent avenue to victory.

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11: Sean Abbott has a fine record vs Heat

Predicted Playing XIs

Brisbane Heat have made two changes to their squad. James Pattinson and Alex Ross come back in. Pattinson will surely play, and Ross is a chance to play ahead of Sam Heazlett.

Brisbane Heat possible XI: 1. Brendon McCullum, 2. Max Bryant, 3. Chris Lynn (c), 4. Joe Burns, 5. Alex Ross, 6. Jimmy Peirson (wk), 7. Ben Cutting, 8. Mitch Swepson, 9. James Pattinson, 10. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11. Josh Lalor

For Sydney Sixers, Greg West replaces Lloyd Pope in the 13-man squad. Ben Manenti was superb on debut, and is expected to line up again.

Sydney Sixers possible XI: 1. Jack Edwards, 2. Joe Denly, 3. Daniel Hughes, 4. Moises Henriques (c), 5. Jordan Silk, 6. Josh Phillipe (wk), 7. Tom Curran, 8. Sean Abbott, 9. Steve O’Keefe, 10. Ben Dwarshuis, 11. Ben Manenti

New Year’s Eve game wasn’t the best. Time for an improvement! Below is my Dream11 Team with a few pointers.

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11 Cricket Blog Cricket Preview CricBlog
Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers Preview + Dream11
  • Josh Phillipe has been a disappointment for Sixers so far this season. Jimmy Peirson has shown better form.
  • Daniel Hughes and Jordan Silk have been two of the Sixers’ better players in BBL08.
  • Max Bryant offers good value, given his ability to get the Heat off to a good start.
  • Tom Curran captains my side, with Ben Cutting VC.
  • All four bowling options are wicket taking options, especially on a slow track. Sean Abbott has 14 wickets in his last four games against Brisbane Heat. James Pattinson against a fragile Sixers top order is a good option.

Stats and Facts

  • This is the second BBL game to be played at Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium.
  • Sydney Sixers bowled Brisbane Heat out for 73 in the last meeting. Sean Abbott took 4/11.
  • Sydney Sixers have won seven of eight meetings against Brisbane Heat.
  • Brisbane Heat have lost their last six BBL matches.

Prediction

Brisbane Heat have shown the kind of deficiencies that had me predicting them to finish last.

I’m backing the Sydney Sixers to win this one, despite their shaky top order. Given their excellent record against the Heat, and solid bowling unit on slow pitches, Sixers will win.

2018 Test Team of the Year

2018 Test Team of the Year

2018 has come and gone (very quickly). It is time to have a look back at the best performers in Test Cricket in the calendar year, which is a very tough ask given the number of excellent performers.

Who gets in your side?

1. Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka) – 743 runs at 46.43

Dimuth Karunaratne was unlucky to miss out on last year’s Test side, but this year he makes it. He was especially brilliant in the series against South Africa, scoring 356 runs in two Tests. He scored just the single century, but he was consistent, and deserves to be in the XI.

2. Dean Elgar (South Africa) – 661 runs at 36.72

Tom Latham scored 658 runs at a much better average of 59.81, but that doesn’t tell the full story.

Dean Elgar scored some of the toughest runs you’ll see in 2018, including his 86* on a brutal Johannesburg pitch vs India, 141* against Australia in Cape Town and 50 on a tough Centurion pitch against Pakistan. Remove Tom Latham’s 264* against Sri Lanka on a flat Wellington pitch (excellent innings, of course), and his figures drop to 394 runs at 35.82. Both Latham and Elgar struggled in Asia this year, but Elgar’s gritty runs gets him the nod.

CricBlog Test Team of the Year 2018 Cricket Opinion
2018 Test Team of the Year: Dean Elgar carried his bat on a tough Johannesburg pitch vs India

3. Kane Williamson (New Zealand) – 651 runs at 59.18

It is a shame New Zealand played just seven Tests this year, but Kane Williamson was magnificent in just about all of them. His superb performances in the UAE was the highlight, delivering a great series win for the Black Caps against Pakistan. All class.

4. Virat Kohli (c) (India) – 1,322 runs at 55.08

Virat Kohli captains the best XI of 2018. This is, in my opinion, Virat Kohli’s best ever year. It began with critics highlighting his need to score away from Asia, especially in England. He was superb in both South Africa and England, topping the run charts in both those series, played in bowler-friendly conditions. He is also on the brink of delivering a first ever series win for India in Australia. A great year.

CricBlog Test Team of the Year 2018 Cricket Opinion
2018 Test Team of the Year: Virat Kohli was absolutely outstanding.

5. AB de Villiers (South Africa) – 638 runs at 53.16

Henry Nicholls (658 runs at 73.11) and Babar Azam (616 runs at 56.00) are extremely unlucky to miss out here. However, AB de Villiers can’t be left out. He was arguably the difference for South Africa against India, and played a huge role in helping the Proteas beat Australia 3-1. He was absolutely superb in bowler friendly conditions. We miss having him in international cricket.

6. BJ Watling (wk) (New Zealand) – 355 runs at 35.50

The man for a crisis. Again, it’s the really tough runs that wins it for me. New Zealand were 36/5 in pursuit of England’s 307 in the second Test in March/April, and Watling made a resolute 85 to get New Zealand on an even keel. New Zealand were 72/4 in the third and deciding Test against Pakistan, and Watling batted 250 balls for his 77 to help get New Zealand to 274. Solid as always, Watling is arguably the best keeper-batsman in Test Cricket.

Tim Paine was solid this year in a tough one for Australia (493 runs at 35.21), Rishabh Pant has had a solid start to Test Cricket (537 runs at 38.35) and Jos Buttler played mostly as a batsman (superb 760 runs at 44.10).

7. Pat Cummins (Australia) – 44 wickets at 19.97

The competition for bowling places is incredible in the 2018 Test Team of the Year. It truly was the year for the bowlers. Pat Cummins gets in at number seven, as he is so capable of batting in that position. He has been Australia’s standout bowler, taking 44 wickets at under 20, bowling beautifully against South Africa and India, after storming home to top the wicket taking charts in the Ashes at the start of the year.

8. Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) – 52 wickets at 20.07

The world’s premier fast bowler. We all know how brilliant he is at home, as he played a key role in series wins over India and Australia. However, he also bowled well in difficult conditions for seamers in Sri Lanka, taking eight wickets in two Tests at 23.84.

CricBlog Test Team of the Year 2018 Cricket Opinion
2018 Test Team of the Year: Kagiso Rabada continues to be brilliant.

9. Nathan Lyon (Australia) – 49 wickets at 34.02

Nathan Lyon had an off-colour tour of South Africa, but his performances in the UAE (where he outbowled Yasir Shah) and India at home have been excellent. He picked up the man of the match award in Perth after nearly guiding Australia home in Adelaide.

10. Mohammad Abbas (Pakistan) – 38 wickets at 13.76

An absolutely extraordinary year from Mohammad Abbas. He was man of the match in Pakistan’s great win at Lord’s in May, and then followed it up with a fine display of seam bowling on flat UAE tracks against Australia. He is likely to be fit for the second Test against South Africa, and he can cause havoc on seaming pitches.

11. Jasprit Bumrah (India) – 48 wickets at 21.02

What an introduction to Test Cricket. This man is yet to play a Test in India, but has already put a marker down as a mainstay in the India side for years to come. His relentless accuracy and pace has been a feature of his bowling, and it is easy to see why India missed him so badly in the first two Tests against England earlier this year. A fine bowler.

Players unlucky to miss out on the 2018 Test Team of the Year:

Tom Latham: As mentioned, Latham was considered, but pipped at the post.

Kusal Mendis: The only player, along with Virat Kohli, to reach 1,000 runs for the year. However, substandard series against South Africa and England means he just misses out.

Joe Root: 948 runs with lots of starts. Finally broke his century drought.

Cheteshwar Pujara: Having a fine series against Australia, but wasn’t at his best in South Africa and England.

Henry Nicholls: Incredibly unlucky to miss out. A fine year from a much improved cricketer.

Babar Azam: Really finding his feet as a Test cricketer.

Jason Holder: Arguably the unluckiest to miss out. His figures are absolutely outstanding, and includes a 50 and five-wicket haul in India. However, home series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on seamer friendly tracks has no doubt helped boost his figures, meaning he misses out to players with consistent performances against higher ranked sides.

Dilruwan Perera: Superb year for Perera, finishing with 50 wickets. Excellent home series against South Africa and England. However, his away stats (12 wickets at 60.91) hurt his chances.

Yasir Shah: The fastest man to 200 Test wickets. Really unlucky to miss out after a fine series against New Zealand.

James Anderson: A fine year for Anderson, showing his class again in England. Just the one wicket in two Tests in Sri Lanka, though, so not enough to get in over the other seamers.

Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami: Part of India’s fine pace trio, but the other seam bowlers had slightly better consistency.

Trent Boult: Another fine year for the New Zealand seamer, with the highlight running through England in March.

So, one of the toughest “Test Team of the Year” articles one can hope to write.

It was truly a bowlers’ year, with a number of fine performances lighting up the format.

As always, feel free to leave a comment! Here’s to a great 2019.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Preview + Dream11

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Preview + Dream11

The New Year’s Eve clash at the picturesque Adelaide Oval. A night to always look forward to.

Adelaide Strikers return home after a tough trip to Perth, where they were exposed to fast and bouncy conditions at Optus Stadium. It is now two defeats on the trot for the defending champions, and now come up against one of the most improved sides. The batting has been a bit of a let down so far in BBL08, and with a few other sides going well, it is time for the Strikers to get going.

Sydney Thunder are indeed one of the most improved sides in BBL08. They too are coming off a defeat, against the still undefeated Hobart Hurricanes, in a game they could have easily won. Jos Buttler continues to defy logic with his white ball form, and his battle against Alex Carey could go a long way to deciding the game. Can the Thunder handle the pressure situations a little better?

Key to an Adelaide Strikers win

Adelaide Strikers’ start was the stuff of nightmares in Perth. Alex Carey has been run out two games in a row, and the Strikers need him to deliver in a game that contains arguably the best keeper batsman in white ball cricket. Jake Weatherald is yet to replicate his form from the back end of last season. Colin Ingram has passed 30 once in his last 12 T20 innings. It is time for the top order to fire in the New Year’s Eve clash against a Sydney Thunder side keen for an improved bowling performance than they showed in Hobart. Then, the middle order can play with greater freedom.

Also, can the Strikers attack get the better of the Thunder top order? Jos Buttler is the key wicket early, along with Shane Watson and Joe Root, who are yet to properly fire in BBL08. Billy Stanlake bowled well in Perth, and needs to find game-to-game consistency. With the likes of Michael Neser, Ben Laughlin, Peter Siddle and the best T20 bowler Rashid Khan, the Strikers have the resources to pick up regular wickets and contain the Thunder lineup.

Key to a Sydney Thunder win

Jos Buttler held the innings beautifully against Hobart Hurricanes, but who else will step up? Shane Watson and Joe Root are yet to get going, and with Callum Ferguson, Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams all showing promising form at one point or another, the Thunder need a cohesive batting performance to put pressure on an Adelaide side looking to arrest a bit of a slide.

However, arguably the biggest area for improvement for the Thunder is in their bowling. They were unable to break through early against the Hurricanes, and need to in Adelaide, as well as execute a lot better in the pressure death overs. Daniel Sams had a bad day, but should be backed to bounce back. Fawad Ahmed also needs to have the impact he did against the Sixers, with Chris Green providing tight overs. Sam Rainbird, a good find so far for the Thunder, will be key also in picking up wickets for his side. A cohesive bowling effort is needed, just like the batting, as two or three poor overs can swing the result.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Preview + Dream11: Jos Buttler and Daniel Sams remain key for the Sydney Thunder

Predicted Playing XIs

Peter Siddle returns to the Adelaide Strikers squad. Legspinner Liam O’Connor also returns. In very sad news, Rashid Khan’s father passed away, but he has said he will like to play this one.

Adelaide Strikers XI: 1. Alex Carey (wk), 2. Jake Weatherald, 3. Matthew Short, 4. Colin Ingram (c), 5. Jono Wells, 6. Jake Lehmann, 7. Rashid Khan, 8. Michael Neser, 9. Peter Siddle, 10. Ben Laughlin, 11. Billy Stanlake

Sydney Thunder have named an unchanged squad. One change they might make is Gurinder Sandhu for the struggling Nathan McAndrew.

Sydney Thunder XI: 1. Jos Buttler (wk), 2. Shane Watson, 3. Callum Ferguson, 4. Joe Root, 5. Jason Sangha, 6. Daniel Sams, 7. Chris Green, 8. Gurinder Sandhu, 9. Sam Rainbird, 10. Jono Cook, 11. Fawad Ahmed

Dream11 Prediction

An exciting clash to round out 2018. Below is my Dream11 Team with a few pointers.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Preview + Dream11
  • Alex Carey’s two run outs have hurt my prediction as Carey as leading run scorer in BBL08! Even though Carey is a great option, how can Buttler be ignored?
  • Jono Wells has been in decent form and offers good value.
  • Matthew Short played a fine knock in his last game at Adelaide Oval.
  • Daniel Sams had a bad game against Hobart Hurricanes, but is still a fine option.
  • Rashid Khan will play (confirmed by Adelaide Strikers).
  • Ben Laughlin gets the nod because of his wicket taking potential at the death.

Stats and Facts

  • Head-to-Head: Strikers 5, Thunder 3
  • Adelaide Strikers have never lost a New Year’s Eve clash in BBL (five matches).
  • Jos Buttler has two fifties in a row.

Prediction

Promises to be an exciting clash.

Both sides are very capable of getting an important victory, but I believe Adelaide Strikers will get a win in a tight game.

Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings

Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings

Forget Rishabh Pant. Can Tim Paine offer a babysitting job to a few of his teammates?

Australia’s top order yet again flopped, displaying technique and temperament so off point that flipping the batting line up might actually work out better. They can learn a thing or two from Pat Cummins, but the silver lining from Australia’s defeat, as well as Arsenal’s thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, is that there are great meme opportunities.

Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings Cricket Blog CricBlog Cricket Opinion
Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings: Pat Cummins has been the standout.

Congratulations to India for retaining the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Their first innings batting came under nearly as much scrutiny from Ricky Ponting as Kerry O’Keeffe’s commentary from cricket fans, but they ensured Australia didn’t bat when the pitch was at its absolute best. Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli ground the Aussies down really well, and the excellent bowling attack showed why its considered one of the most improved in the world.

Didn’t expect the rubbish Daily Telegraph to know that.

Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings Cricket Blog CricBlog Cricket Opinion
Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings: This has aged very well.

In this article, each player will be rated out of ten. As always, feel free to leave a comment!

Australia:

Kerry O’Keeffe: Thought it was a decent idea to laugh at India’s First Class competition when Australia have Mitchell Marsh batting at six. Also had a laugh about Indian names as he couldn’t pronounce Cheteshwar and Jadeja. If he’s so knowledgeable as a pundit, he better show it! 0

Marcus Harris: Not sure what was worse – Harris’ second innings shot or the fact that Mark Waugh thought he was unlucky. Pushing out in front with hard hands against a turning ball is loose technique, not bad luck. 3

Aaron Finch: We understand how India fans felt when KL Rahul and Murali Vijay walked out to bat. Looks out of his depth as Test opener does Finch. Will he succeed at number six with the ball turning and reversing? Not sure. Front pad as big as Shane Watson’s. 1

Usman Khawaja: Usman Khawaja was supposed to top the run scoring charts and lead Australia to victory. Where is he? 4

Shaun Marsh: Repeat of second Test rating. Death. Taxes. Shaun Marsh doing just enough to keep his spot. Victim of a superb slower ball by Jasprit Bumrah that would have had all viewers oohing and aahing at its beauty. 5

Travis Head: Not sure if any motorsport companies will be looking at Travis Head. Just can’t seem to get past start. Second innings dismissal in particular as a result of technique. Driving away from the body, no footwork and head not over the ball. 4

Mitchell Marsh: Everyone deserves a 437578th chance. Australian fans have about as much faith in Mitch Marsh as Virat Kohli has in his lower order. His second innings shot showed why. How long do Australia keep persisting with him? Fair effort with the ball on day one, but that’s about it. 2

Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings Cricket Blog CricBlog Cricket Opinion
Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings: Australian selectors are desperate for Mitch Marsh to repay the faith…

Tim Paine: It is time Paine asks some of his top order to babysit full time. Here is lovely poem for the Australian captain that Rishabh Pant could use for Sydney:

“Excellent with his words, gave us a laugh, but like his teammates couldn’t get past start.” 4

Patrick Cummins: Absolutely outstanding. Australia’s standout performer by an absolute mile. Never stopped trying. Each one of his teammates should thank him for his effort and learn from it. Bat and ball. 10

Mitchell Starc: When discussing the best bowling attack in the world, can we say the best is one that includes a misfiring Mitchell Starc? Not swinging the new ball like we know he can. No, it’s nothing to do with sandpaper, but rather, wrist position. It’s the new ball. 3

Nathan Lyon: Nathan Lyon’s most quiet Test of the series to date. 1/150. Toiled hard to keep an end tight. 3.5

Josh Hazlewood: His MCG record didn’t improve much. Still not quite at his best. 4

India:

Ravi Shastri: Dropped KL Rahul, Murali Vijay and Umesh Yadav. Ravi got a 10 from me in Perth. Here, a big zero! 0

Hanuma Vihari: Bounced out by Pat Cummins twice. Vihari has potential, but he needs to improve against the short ball if he wants to be successful in all conditions. 2

Mayank Agarwal: Superb debut from a talented player. Some absolutely brilliant catching, too. Not bad from someone who made a triple hundred against a bunch of “canteen staff”. Time for Australia to focus more on commentary quality. 8

Cheteshwar Pujara: First innings hundred that ground Australia into the dirt. Patience is his middle name. Out for a second innings duck, but the game was won by then. 9

Virat Kohli: Back soreness for the Indian captain, but ended his magnificent 2018 as captain of India’s first ever victory in a Boxing Day Test in Australia. Excellent patience for his 82. Like Pujara, was out for a second innings duck, but the result was set in stone. 8

Ajinkya Rahane: Needs runs in Sydney to keep his place assured. For me, he is doing just enough to keep his place in the team. Like Shaun Marsh for Australia. 4

Rohit Sharma: Hurt Australia at a key stage in the first innings, getting India over 400. Good contribution. Hitman fans happy everywhere. 7

Rishabh Pant: Tim Paine was always going to get some back. Pant was on fire behind the stumps, but not so much with the gloves, with a few chances going down. With two 30s and three dismissals, it was a decent outing. 6.5

Ravindra Jadeja: Showed why India missed him in Perth. Wasn’t at his best in the second innings, but always asked enough questions by keeping things simple. Bowling into the rough. Does he get ahead of Ashwin if India play one spinner in Sydney? 7

Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings Cricket Blog CricBlog Cricket Opinion
Australia vs India 3rd Test Player Ratings: A superb Indian pace trio.

Mohammed Shami: Part of the excellent India pace trio. Asked questions right throughout the Test, with the highlight his second innings ball to Usman Khawaja. “Ricky Ponting was hurting after that one”, said Shami after the Test (not quite). 7

Ishant Sharma: “Worst seamer to tour Australia” is what the media carried on about before the series. For anyone with any cricket knowledge, his improvement over the last two years is there to see. 7

Jasprit Bumrah: What an addition to India’s side. Absolutely outstanding. Nine wickets in the Test, pipping an awesome Pat Cummins to the man of the match award. Deservedly so. Opened the game right up for India on the third day with the best ever figures for an Indian at the MCG. The slower ball to get Shaun Marsh was a thing of beauty. Absolutely relentless. 10

Congratulations India on a very strong performance in the Boxing Day Test.

It is their first win ever in a Boxing Day Test in Australia, it was well deserved. The Border Gavaskar Trophy stays with India, but now attention turns to whether they can win their first Test series down under.

They look odds on favourites to, unless Australia can pull something out of the hat.
