Asia Cup Super Four: Pakistan vs India Player Ratings: GET US OUT OF HERE

Remember when Pakistan were going to win the World Cup? Fakhar Zaman was the best thing since sliced bread, and you couldn’t dare mention the need for Pakistan to do to greater opposition what they did to Zimbabwe.

It has been an Asia Cup of turmoil. Fakhar Zaman reportedly left during the Afghanistan game for Zimbabwe, so too Sarfraz Ahmed who was having the time of his life in Africa. The biggest concern over there was Hasan Ali pulling a neck muscle when doing his “boom” celebration.

Of course, I’m joking, but the reality for Pakistan is that they need to be more consistent against the top sides. It’s two days since the match, but I just had to get a player ratings piece together. Pakistan’s Champions Trophy victory last year showed us they could perform well, but their performances against India in this tournament shows that their bad days are still very prominent. That, combined with their 5-0 abomination in New Zealand earlier this year shows they have plenty of improvement in them.

For India, well, they’d be thinking what all the India v Pakistan hype is about. Two potential blockbusters have not even made a slight crack in that block, with India forcing their way into the Final with the most dominant of performances. Their bowling is as clinical as ever, and their opening combination is in imperious touch.

In this article, each player will be put under the CricBlog microscope, and rated out of ten! Watch out…

Pakistan

Fakhar Zaman: After running away during the Afghanistan game, Fakhar threatened to find his best form in this one, but faltered. Should have reviewed after hitting the glove. A dismissal reflective of his tournament to date. After predicting Fakhar will be leading run scorer, I’ve been made to look like an absolute fool! Thanks Fakhar! Must step up against Bangladesh in the do-or-die clash. 4

Imam-ul-Haq: Victim of the DRS (Dhoni Review System). Like Fakhar, Imam is unable to find the form he had earlier in the year. Also must step up against Bangladesh. 2Babar Azam: One of a spate of run outs during the match. Sold down the river by his captain. Reportedly told Sarfraz Ahmed that he had another useless match. 1

Sarfraz Ahmed: Fakhar ran away during the Afghanistan game, and Sarfraz reportedly ran away after the India game. Terrible running contributing to Babar Azam’s dismissal, and was threatening to get going but got out at a bad time. Can’t blame him if he forgot what it was like to bat out in the middle for a prolonged period of time. 6.5

Shoaib Malik: Malik is an absolute expert at maneuvering the spinners in the middle overs. Strangled down the leg side and was the difference between Pakistan reaching 237 and 270. Quality knock. A couple of the other players could learn a thing or two. 9

Asif Ali: Was also a key cog in Pakistan’s quest to reach a competitive total. Showed his hitting potential with a couple of big sixes. 7

Shadab Khan: A day full of full tosses and long hops. One to forget. 2

Mohammad Nawaz: Ineffective. 2

Hasan Ali: “I wish to take all ten India wickets”, said Hasan Ali before the tournament. After two games against India, all Pakistan bowlers have two wickets combined. The photo below by World of Cricket Trolls is arguably the best thing ever. 2

Mohammad Amir: Virat Kohli apparently didn’t play this tournament because he was scared of Mohammad Amir. After ten ODIs this year, Amir has three wickets. That’s two more than Alastair Cook has in Tests. 1

Shaheen Afridi: More dropped catches off this man’s bowling. Did he do anything to piss anyone off? 2

India

Rohit Sharma: Sublime. Completely dominated the Pakistan side as if they were a park side. “All the talk was about Virat Kohli in the lead up to the tournament”, Rohit said. “They have forgotten about a certain Rohit Sharma.” Also, his tactics on the field is excellent, in my opinion. 10

Interesting words from Rohit Sharma after the match

Shikhar Dhawan: Shikhar THEone. His white ball form is unbelievable, and is looking a million bucks. He enables Rohit to take his time early. Part of a fantastic opening partnership. 10

Ambati Rayudu: Felt what it was like to be a Pakistan no.4 and lower batsman in Zimbabwe. Will he get a go against Afghanistan? 5

Kedhar Jadhav: Expensive in his three overs, and wasn’t required with the bat. 3

MS Dhoni: Dhoni the keeper is magnificent. He was the reason for the wicket of Imam-ul-Haq. The Dhoni Review System in full flow. 7

Dinesh Karthik: Was pictured having a cup of tea on the field. It was a hot day, but why not? N/A

Ravindra Jadeja: Superb in the field, but inconsistent with the ball. The challenge for Jadeja is showing that the Bangladesh game on Friday was not a one-off. 4

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Not as fruitful as his previous two games, but Bhuvi remains a vital cog in India’s quest to lift the Asia Cup Trophy. 5

Kuldeep Yadav: Name: Kuldeep Yadav. Occupation: Building pressure on the opposition. Another good day. 8

Yuzvendra Chahal: Another good day out for Yuzvendra Chahal, also. Reached his 50th wicket in his 30th ODI. 7.5

Jasprit Bumrah: What an incredible bowler this guy is. Unconventional, unorthodox, but damn effective. India’s best bowler in this game. 9

—–

So, another thrashing in an India-Pakistan game. Is it worth building up to these games anymore? We may not need to if Pakistan put on another poor showing against Bangladesh!

For India, they are on fire at the moment. Their middle order remains the worry, but the top order is ensuring they are not needed.

Asia Cup Super Four: Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Preview

The laughs continue in Asia Cup 2018. From the scheduling farce to Bangladesh players and selectors not even knowing that two players have been brought into the squad, it’s just been peak banter at times. But amid all that, there is a high stakes clash today – the complete opposite of Thursday’s clash between these two sides.

Afghanistan’s cricket in this tournament has been terrific. They have forced each of their three opponents to chase 250+, and only Pakistan were able to get there, just. One of the sides who weren’t able to get there was indeed Bangladesh, with Afghanistan pummeling them by 136 runs just a few days ago. The template is set for Afghanistan against a Bangladesh side on edge – can they keep their tournament alive?

With Bangladesh, their management leaves plenty to be desired. With a little unrest at the moment after two heavy losses and two players brought into the squad without the players/selectors even knowing, they will need a big effort today to overcome a good Afghanistan team. Their performance against India was painful to watch – you would find less dots in a children’s “join the dots” book, and against a quality spin attack here, Bangladesh will have to find a way to do much better than their last two efforts. Like Afghanistan, their tournament is on the line, so can they step up?

Key to an Afghanistan win

Afghanistan’s batting is their weaker point, but it has been an impressive showing from them so far in Asia Cup 2018. Three targets of 250+ have made life very difficult for their opponents, and one gets the feeling that if they bat first and bat well, they’ll be too good for Bangladesh again.
Hashmatullah Shahidi’s knock against Pakistan was magnificent, highlighted by his shift of gears at the right time. Asghar Afghan played his most significant knock of his tournament, and a repeat effort by Afghanistan in this clash will hold them in great stead ahead of their clash with India, that could be a shot at reaching the Final.
Also, Afghanistan’s spinners spun Bangladesh into a web so large on Thursday that it would not have been out of place in central Australia. Rashid Khan destroyed Bangladesh, backed up by the talented Mujeeb ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi. Against a Bangladesh side that is seemingly unable to rotate the strike, accurate, relentless spin bowling could prove too hot for Bangladesh to handle.

Key to a Bangladesh win

After the optimism following their win over Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have crashed significantly. In their last two games, against two excellent spin attacks in India and Afghanistan, the Tigers have scored 292 runs in 91.2 overs, which is a scoring rate that some fans out there would call too slow even in Test Cricket.
Their shot selection has been unbelievably poor at times, created by a complete lack of strike rotation. A mammoth 190 dot balls were on display against India, and they simply can’t display the same incompetence again. For that to happen, Shakib Al Hasan, who can play very stupidly when frustrated, needs to step up and play a long innings, and so too Mushfiqur Rahim. Ideally, Bangladesh would like to bat first to get a total on the board, rather than chase, but the batting has to improve either way.

Possible teams

Afghanistan’s pace attack was a bit of a let down against Pakistan, so it remains to be seen whether any changes will be made in that department.
Afghanistan possible XI: 1. Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2. Ihsanullah, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Hashmatullah Shahidi, 5. Asghar Afghan (c), 6. Mohammad Nabi, 7. Najibullah Zadran, 8. Gulbadin Naib, 9. Rashid Khan, 10. Aftab Alam, 11. Mujeeb Ur Rahman
For Bangladesh, well, it’s a farce. Imrul Kayes and Soumya Sarkar were brought in without the knowledge of any of the players. Either or both could come in and open, looking at Liton Das and Nazmul Hossain Shanto’s struggles.
Bangladesh possible XI: 1. Liton Das/Imrul Kayes, 2. Nazmul Hossain Shanto/Soumya Sarkar, 3. Shakib Al Hasan, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Mohmmad Mithun/Mominul Haque, 7. Mossadek Hossain, 8. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9. Mashrafe Mortaza (c), 10. Rubel Hossain/Abu Hider, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

Stats and Facts

  • Bangladesh have scored 292/20 in 91.2 overs in their last two games combined (3.20 runs per over).
  • Afghanistan have beaten Bangladesh four times across formats in 2018 (three T20Is, one ODI).
  • Bangladesh have lost their last 11 ODIs with Tamim Iqbal not in the side.

Prediction

Both sides are very capable of putting on a good performance when needed. Rightly, though, Afghanistan are favourites, thanks to the much better cricket they are playing.
Can’t see anything other than an Afghanistan win. Can Bangladesh surprise? It remains to be seen.

Asia Cup Super Four: Pakistan vs India Preview

The 2nd ODI of the India v Pakistan three-match bilateral ODI series Asia Cup battle is here. After an incredibly one-sided contest on Wednesday, here is hoping that one of cricket’s most colourful rivalries will light up an Asia Cup tournament that is somewhat flickering right now.

Pakistan, for all their pre-tournament expectations (from myself, also), have somewhat underwhelmed so far. Chasing 250+ against a good Afghanistan attack in these conditions will give them confidence, but that they let Afghanistan reach that mark could be cause for concern. Their fielding, where they dropped five catches, was an abomination. However, win here would confirm a spot in the Final, and what better way to do it than by beating arch-rivals India?

While Pakistan have been underwhelming in their last two outings, the opposite can be said of India. After a scratchy, somewhat nervy, win over Hong Kong, the Indians have burst into gear with huge wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh. These two victories have been on the back of their bowling, forcing an unbelievable 190 dot balls against sorry Bangladesh on Friday, paving the way for their in-form top order to cruise to the target once again.

Key to a Pakistan win

While India have been very clinical in their last two performances, they are not without any concerns. Ravindra Jadeja is batting at seven, and while India have decent talent on paper in the middle order, they are yet to suggest they can grab a game by the scruff of the neck in recent times. Can Pakistan get early wickets, and then maintain pressure with more aggressive bowling and better catching than on display vs Afghanistan?
In addition to their bowling throughout their innings, their death bowling was poor. Usman Khan and Hasan Ali were unable to force dot balls at the end, bowling far too many hittable balls.
Afghanistan getting to 250+ was a big ask for Pakistan to chase, but Shoaib Malik’s experience and know-how got his team home. Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam set things up with a patient, but important stand, but much more is needed from the likes of Fakhar Zaman and Sarfraz Ahmed. Fakhar in particular is probably dreaming of Zimbabwe right now – he is looking to avoid his third duck in a row.

Key to an India win

Such is India’s confidence with the ball right now that they are willing to bowl first in the UAE heat, and they have been magnificent in executing their plans. Across their last two games vs Pakistan and Bangladesh, India have conceded just 335 runs in 92.2 overs, testament to the planning and execution involved in their bowling and fielding efforts.
Ravindra Jadeja will sure be looking to build the pressure on the Pakistani batsmen, but much depends also on the impressive Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah opening burst. They rocked Pakistan with two early wickets on Wednesday, which forced the men in green to crawl along a little in attempt of a recovery. Can India’s impressive attack combine again to reach the Final?
Also, in addition to the bowlers, Rohit Sharma has been in fine touch. His 80* on Friday was his second successive fifty, and he remains a vital key to India’s chances today along with Shikhar Dhawan. Can the top order step up, and be backed up effectively by the middle order if required?

Possible XIs

Pakistan were short of spin options against Afghanistan, which nearly came back to haunt them. Shadab Khan could be fit to play today, which will be a huge boost. Shaheen Afridi was unlucky against Afghanistan, but it remains to be seen whether he or Haris Sohail play in this one.
Pakistan possible XI: 1. Fakhar Zaman, 2. Imam-ul-Haq, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Shoaib Malik, 5. Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 6. Asif Ali, 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Mohammad Nawaz, 9. Shaheen Afridi, 10. Hasan Ali, 11. Usman Khan
India, with the chance to qualify for the Final, should stick with the same team. A win here can enable them to rotate players in the last Super Four game against Afghanistan.
India possible XI: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Ambati Rayudu, 4. Dinesh Karthik, 5. MS Dhoni (wk), 6. Kedhar Jadhav, 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Jasprit Bumrah, 11. Yuzvendra Chahal

Stats and Facts

  • The last four India-Pakistan matches have been one-sided. The results read: eight wickets, 180 runs, 124 runs, 76 runs.
  • Rohit Sharma needs 94 runs to reach 7,000 ODI runs. Eight Indian batsmen have previously reached this mark.
  • Babar Azam plays his 50th ODI today.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar needs four wickets to reach 100 in ODIs, and Yuzvendra Chahal needs two to reach 50.

Prediction

Pakistan is a side that can step up and surprise us all when we least expect it. India need to guard against this possibility today, but they are looking a well-oiled machine today.
The India-Pakistan prediction on Wednesday was not good from me, so hoping for better luck today! India to win and reach the Final.

Asia Cup Super Four: Afghanistan vs Pakistan Preview

Like Bangladesh v India, it is a battle of the thrashers vs. the thrashed from the last start efforts, with more at stake in the Super Four stage. I do sound like a whinging baby at times, but with a day off tomorrow for all teams, Afghanistan might be wondering why the game is today instead of tomorrow. For us fans, it would have perhaps been more fitting to catch every game properly, which will be a challenge today, given both games are on at the same time.

Nonetheless, a magnificent opportunity awaits Afghanistan. They, along with India, are the only two undefeated teams in the tournament, and the way they have played suggests they can challenge for a spot in the Final. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh present their own tests, but Pakistan will provide a different challenge. Can Afghanistan continue their great run, led by Rashid Khan, part of their simply awesome spin attack?

In this game, Pakistan’s bounce back ability will be put to the test. Their performance against India was not one of a team who are widely considered much improved, and remain a side that can have too many off-days, despite winning the Champions Trophy last year. It is the business end of the tournament now, and they are up against a side who is playing confidently. Can Pakistan bounce back and take a step towards the Asia Cup Final?

Key to an Afghanistan win

Two handsome wins for Afghanistan in this tournament, but their batting is still of concern. 160/7 against Bangladesh is shaky waters, and thanks to Rashid Khan and Gulbadin Naib’s amazing partnership, a total of 255/7 proved way too much for Bangladesh. Their batting was also a tad shaky against Sri Lanka, especially towards the end that time, which creates the need for a full batting effort against a good Pakistan attack.
Can the Afghanistan top order stave off the Pakistan pace threat?
Also, the toss can prove crucial here. The Afghans have displayed their prowess in defending totals so far in Asia Cup 2018, simply too good for Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. What impact will the spinners have against a Pakistan side looking to right-the-wrongs from a terrible performance against India?

Key to a Pakistan win

As mentioned, Afghanistan’s batting leaves a bit to be desired at the moment, and Pakistan need to exploit it. Whether Mohammad Amir plays is an interesting dilemma, given he has taken just three wickets in nine ODIs this year, and in matches such as these, early wickets can really push opponents back. Can Pakistan get into Afghanistan’s middle order quickly?
Also, if you think Pakistan could have an easier time of things by playing Afghanistan after India, think again. The batsmen will be challenged, especially by the spinners, so how they execute their plans against them is vital. Can Pakistan rotate the strike effectively, which will be the basis of a much better batting effort than Wednesday?

Possible XIs

Despite playing yesterday, it makes sense for Afghanistan to stick with a winning combination. Mohammad Shahzad could struggle after all that running between the wickets yesterday!
Afghanistan possible XI: 1. Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2. Ihsanullah, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Asghar Afghan (c), 5. Hashmatullah Shahidi, 6. Samiullah Shenwari, 7. Mohammad Nabi, 8. Gulbadin Naib, 9. Rashid Khan, 10. Aftab Alam, 11. Mujeeb Ur Rahman
There is a possibility Mohammad Amir will be left out for Junaid Khan. Also, Shadab Khan is in big doubt after limping off the field against India.
Pakistan possible XI: 1. Fakhar Zaman, 2. Imam-ul-Haq, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Shoaib Malik, 5. Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 6. Asif Ali, 7. Mohmmad Nawaz/Shadab Khan, 8. Faheem Ashraf, 9. Junaid Khan, 10. Hasan Ali, 11. Usman Khan

Stats and Facts

  • Pakistan and Afghanistan have played two ODIs against each other, with Pakistan winning both.
  • Rashid Khan is the only player to take 100 ODI wickets by his 20th birthday.
  • Pakistan, in their last 17 ODIs, have won 11 against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong. Against India and New Zealand, their record is 0-6.

Prediction

What an interesting match this promises to be.
In a tournament bereft of competitive matches, a match difficult to predict is a good change. With Pakistan’s batting likely to hold better than Afghanistan’s, I will count that as the key difference, and go with a Pakistan win.

Asia Cup Super Four: Bangladesh vs India Preview

After a bit of a debacle in terms of Group Stage scheduling, the Super Four stage is here. One side is coming off one hell of a belting, and another is coming off giving one. If someone predicted that the India vs Hong Kong match would the most competitive out of the six so far, you would have asked them about what they had for breakfast. Or, perhaps, if they had been smoking something.

In regards to this clash, India and Bangladesh have had a few good ODI battles over the last few years, and after a Group Stage that was bereft of competitive battles, one can hope for a good game here.

One can only hope indeed after Bangladesh’s almighty collapse against Afghanistan yesterday. A couple of key players were missing due to injury and workload maintenance, but the old issues of poor death bowling and struggle against quality spin were at the fore. India possess players in the middle order looking to perform, as well as a couple of the world’s best limited overs spinners, so Bangladesh need a mighty improvement in their performance. This match counts for more than yesterday’s, so it will be interesting to see if Bangladesh can quickly put the pummeling behind them.

India, on the other hand, have impressed. A tournament so soon for their Test players after England, plus back-to-back matches in the UAE heat could have got the better of them. Instead, they are coming off a huge win against their arch-rivals Pakistan, with their bowling attack particularly impressing. Bhuvneshwar Kumar made use of his run against Hong Kong, and Jasprit Bumrah is always a brilliant addition. The spinners, including Kedhar Jadhav, will be a threat, and so too India’s top order which looks in good touch even without Virat Kohli. Can the men in blue take one step towards the Final?

Key to a Bangladesh win

It was an almighty struggle yesterday for the Tigers, batting at a run rate fit for Test cricket, rather than a chase of 256. Their inability to rotate strike is an issue, and for them to have a chance today, that simply has to improve. What Bangladesh need to learn is that boundaries and big shots are not everything in limited overs batting.
Will the return of Mushfiqur Rahim prove to be the difference? His magnificent 144 v Sri Lanka last Saturday certainly suggests he is the crucial figure in the batting line up, and they need him to step up today. Much also depends on Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah, with Bangladesh’s less experienced players still failing to step up.
Also, Bangladesh conceding 255 after having Afghanistan struggling at 160/7 after 41 just highlights that while they have made improvements in ODIs, the need for further improvement remains. India possess a top order than can cause damage, so Bangladesh will need to continue their trend of taking early wickets. However, the challenge is bowling and fielding well right throughout the innings, so they will have to be on their game.

Key to an India win

How impressive were India’s bowlers against Pakistan? Sure, Pakistan obliged with some ordinary batting, but India’s discipline and execution was a marker of their credentials in this tournament. Against a side that can falter under pressure, India have the resources to exploit that, but the challenge is executing the plans once again 48 hours after one masterclass.
Also, India’s middle order wasn’t needed on Wednesday, owing to the bowling as well as the top order playing well. Bangladesh have been in the wickets early so far in Asia Cup 2018, so a good platform can enable a somewhat struggling middle order to target a side that can struggle at the death, as was on show yesterday.

Possible teams

For Bangladesh, expect Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman to slot back into the side. Rahim is a key player with the bat, no doubt, and Mustafizur is important for the death overs, where he was missed yesterday.
Bangladesh possible XI: 1. Liton Das, 2. Nazmul Hossain Shanto/Mominul Haque, 3. Shakib Al Hasan, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Mossadek Hossain, 7. Mohammad Mithun, 8. Mashrafe Mortaza (c), 9. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 10. Rubel Hossain, 11. Mustafizur Rahman
For India, Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the tournament with back spasms. Will they go with Ravindra Jadeja or another seamer? Khaleel Ahmed or Deepak Chahar could get a look in, but that option leaves the batting a little short.
India possible XI: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Ambati Rayudu, 4. Dinesh Karthik, 5. MS Dhoni (wk), 6. Kedhar Jadhav, 7. Ravindra Jadeja/Khaleel Ahmed/Deepak Chahar, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Jasprit Bumrah, 11. Yuzvendra Chahal

Stats and Facts

  • India are on a nine-match winning streak against Bangladesh across formats (six T20Is, two ODIs and one Test).
  • Mushfiqur Rahim averages 38.53 v India, nearly five points more than his career average of 33.82.
  • Rohit Sharma has hit two centuries in his last five ODI innings vs Bangladesh.

Prediction

Bangladesh are a much improved ODI side these days, but it’s hard to go past India, considering Bangladesh’s shortcoming against quality spin bowling.
Can we see a surprise result? Potentially, but India look good to start the Super Four stage off with a win.

Asia Cup 6th Match: Bangladesh vs Afghanistan Preview

Imagine having a schedule so stupid that it genuinely doesn’t matter where you finish, and where teams are forced to play second string XIs just to give themselves a chance of avoiding burnout. The scheduling has forced the sixth match, like the fifth between Pakistan and India, to be a dead-rubber instead of one that could have at least had some context to it.

Regardless if Bangladesh win this match, the tournament has been set up in such a way that they will play India in Dubai tomorrow. India had to play two days in a row, but at least both were in Dubai, where Bangladesh will have to move from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and play a big game within hours. Mashrafe Mortaza has expressed his disappointment, and it is disappointing that this is the topic of conversation instead of the cricket. With players expected (and rightly so) to be rested, can the fringe players for Bangladesh impress?

For Afghanistan, they are due to play Pakistan. With an extra day’s rest after this clash, they can afford to play the same side that pummeled Sri Lanka, and continue building confidence ahead of the Super Four stage. In the three T20Is between the sides in June, where Afghanistan won 3-0, the spinners were on song. Can the batsmen show the fight they did against Sri Lanka, backed up by Afghanistan’s impressive spin attack, led by birthday boy Rashid Khan?

Key to a Bangladesh win

Tamim Iqbal is out of the tournament with injury, and there is a possibility the likes of Shakib, Mushfiqur and Mashrafe will be rested. It would make sense to give fringe players in the setup a chance to impress, and give fans hope for the future. The big question is – can Bangladesh effectively handle Afghanistan’s spin brigade? Bangladesh, with more experienced players that they are likely to have today, have struggled against quality spin in the past, so positive footwork and rotation of the strike is vital. A player like Mominul Haque could be a good addition today to help hold the innings together.

However, Bangladesh’s best chance is dismissing Afghanistan for a low score. Batting is Afghanistan’s weaker point, so Bangladesh have to target that with the sort of aggressive bowling they displayed against Sri Lanka last Saturday.

Key to an Afghanistan win

Afghanistan’s 3-0 T20I series win over Bangladesh earlier this year stemmed from the spinners being too good. What will have alarm bells ringing among those associated with Bangladesh was Afghanistan’s total dominance over Sri Lanka, with each of Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman taking two wickets at low economy rates. Against a side possibly missing experienced, seasoned stars, Afghanistan have a great chance of joining India as the only two undefeated sides in the tournament.
Also, in what was a pleasant surprise, Afghanistan’s batting held up quite well in their win over Sri Lanka. Rahmat Shah was the backbone, with support from those around him, and the same will be key for Afghanistan today. Can they finish off a little better if in a similar position?

Possible teams

As mentioned, it would make sense for Bangladesh to make changes, such as the truly magnificent scheduling on display in this tournament. The likes of Mominul Haque and Abu Hider could get a run.
Bangladesh possible XI: 1. Liton Das, 2. Nazmul Hossain Shanto, 3. Mominul Haque/Shakib Al Hasan, 4. Mushfiqur Rahim/Ariful Haque, 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Mosddek Hossain, 7. Mohammad Mithun, 8. Mashrafe Mortaza/Nazmul Islam, 9. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 10. Rubel Hossain, 11. Mustafizur Rahman/Abu Hider
For Afghanistan, they will have a day off after this, but have the option if resting some players if they wish.
Afghanistan possible XI: 1. Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2. Ihsanullah, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Asghar Afghan (c), 5. Hashmatullah Shahidi, 6. Mohammad Nabi, 7. Najibullah Zadran, 8. Gulbadin Naib, 9. Rashid Khan, 10. Aftab Alam, 11. Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Stats and Facts

  • Bangladesh have won three of five ODIs vs Afghanistan, but this is the first meeting between the sides in the UAE.
  • Afghanistan beat Bangladesh 3-0 in the T20I series earlier this year.
  • Mashrafe Mortaza is four wickets away from 250 ODI wickets, and Rahmat Shah will likely play his 50th game today.

Prediction

It’s incredible to think Bangladesh play again tomorrow, which puts them at a disadvantage today, in my opinion.
Afghanistan to win, on the back of their bowling.

Asia Cup 5th Match: India vs Pakistan Preview + Dream11

Stop the press. We have an India vs Pakistan game. The first since Pakistan’s amazing victory in the Champions Trophy Final last year.
The two favourites for the tournament go head-to-head in what must be called a relatively low key clash, given both sides have already qualified for the Super Four with contrasting wins over Hong Kong.
But, in reality, there is no such thing as a low key India vs Pakistan clash. In its rarity, you will discover its beauty, deriving from an incredible rivalry. Neither team will want to lose this one.
After a scratchy, nervy day yesterday, India will be back at it again today. Sure, the team fielded yesterday is not first choice, but the same pressing issues remain. Their middle order and early over bowling issues need to be sorted out ahead of next year’s World Cup, and they will be put to the test against talented sides for the remainder of this tournament. With changes expected, can they put a better showing today?
For Pakistan, watching closely yesterday would have given them key pointers on how to beat India. Of course, India will be up for this game, and will be a difficult beat, but Pakistan have the resources to not only do well today, but go all the way in Asia Cup 2018. Can they flex their muscle and make a big statement against a side that struggled to dislodge Hong Kong?

Key to an India win

Even without Virat Kohli, so much depends on India’s top order. Yesterday, Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik helped propel India to 240/2 midway through the 41st over.
That they only reached 285 from there is a big concern, highlighting the continuous middle order challenges facing India. Can MS Dhoni stand up today? What about Kedhar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya, if picked?
Also, expect India to be back at full strength with the ball, with Jasprit Bumrah in line for a return to the team. Early wickets are a must against a strong performing Pakistan top order, paving the way for Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav to do their thing. India really struggled against Hong Kong’s openers, and a repeat should be avoided.

Key to a Pakistan win

Pakistan look a good side at the moment, but the opposition in their last six ODIs have not exactly resembled powerhouse.
Given India’s predicament right now, having just completed an England tour plus a tougher match that hoped for in the UAE heat, Pakistan are favourites. How will they respond? Will Pakistan’s left arm seamers cause India problems? Can they knock over the top order and target the fragile Indian middle order? What damage can Pakistan’s in form top order cause?
These are key questions that will pave the way to success for Pakistan in this clash.

Possible teams

With the schedule not very kind, expect India to go in with a few changes today. KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya could be back. Khaleel Ahmed could feel hard done by after a good debut.
India possible XI: 1. Rohit Sharma (c), 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. KL Rahul, 4. Ambati Rayudu, 5. Kedhar Jadhav, 6. MS Dhoni (wk), 7. Hardik Pandya, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Jasprit Bumrah, 11. Yuzvendra ChahalFor Pakistan, it is likely they will stick with the same side that brushed Hong Kong aside.

Pakistan possible XI: 1. Fakhar Zaman, 2. Imam-ul-Haq, 3. Babar Azam, 4. Shoaib Malik, 5. Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), 6. Asif Ali, 7. Shadab Khan, 8. Faheem Ashraf, 9. Mohammad Amir, 10. Hasan Ali, 11. Usman Khan

Dream11

This game possesses a number of excellent players from each side.
  • Rohit Sharma is a good option. He has had a few failures in a row in ODIs, which is a cue to a good innings, even against Pakistan’s left armers.
  • Will Shikhar Dhawan back up well after yesterday? Not sure.
  • Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman (c) make the team, so too Hardik Pandya and Shadab Khan who have wicket taking potential.
  • I expect Bhuveneshwar Kumar to have a better outing than yesterday. Mohammad Amir loves big games, as is a good pick despite just three wickets in eight ODIs this year. Hasan Ali is also a quality ODI bowler.

Stats and Facts

  • It is the first meeting between Pakistan and India since the Champions Trophy Final in 2017.
  • Since then, Pakistan have won 11 of 16 ODIs, all against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong.
  • MS Dhoni vs Pakistan in ODIs: 33 matches, 1,230 runs, avg. 56
  • This match will be the first of two India-Pakistan matches in Asia Cup 2018. It could be three, provided both teams make the final.
  • If Yuzvendra Chahal gets two wickets against Pakistan, he’ll become India’s third fastest to 50 wickets, after Ajit Agarkar (23 matches) and Kuldeep Yadav (24 matches).

Prediction

It was good to see a competitive match yesterday, and hoping for the same today.
At the moment, though, Pakistan are looking a little more settled. I will go for them to win today, with India to get stronger as the tournament goes on.

Asia Cup 4th Match: India vs Hong Kong Preview + Dream11

Probably the worst game you could hope for in the need for a competitive match.

Mainly thanks to Sri Lanka’s inept displays, this Asia Cup tournament is bereft of any competitiveness so far. It’s hard to think that the fourth match will be any different.

One thing that could work in Hong Kong’s favour is that India are due to play today and tomorrow, which is incredible considering the heat. Bangladesh and Afghanistan should really be playing tomorrow. Anyway, two days of action in a row in the hot conditions may prompt India to leave a few regular starters out of this one ahead of the Pakistan clash. Like their biggest rivals, India have the opportunity to start the Asia Cup with a big win.

For Hong Kong, they were always going to find things difficult. For a side that reportedly plays four club games in three months, they are on a hiding to nothing, which should make calls louder for more opportunities in between tournaments. In regards to this game, the best one can hope for is a more competitive showing, based on learning from their mistakes against Pakistan.

Key to an India win

It’s easy to focus on a big game vs Pakistan tomorrow, but India need to be switched on here first.
Hong Kong struggled in rotating the strike vs Pakistan, and India have the resources to exploit that. Boasting a spin attack that can trouble any side, the Indians will be aiming to choke the scoring rate and pick up wickets constantly, much like Bangladesh and Afghanistan did to sorry Sri Lanka.
Also, whether India play a full strength batting line up or not, time in the middle is important. For that, India will probably need to hope they bat first, but from an all-round perspective, India need to avoid complacency.

Key to a Hong Kong win

Could you imagine social media if this happens? I’d be on Twitter all day getting no work done!
For Hong Kong to be at all competitive this one, they would love another chance to bat first and this time, get runs on the board. Totals around the 250 mark have proven to be very useful in these conditions, but India are far superior to Sri Lanka as an ODI unit. Nonetheless, players like Anshuman Rath and Kinchit Shah need to build on their starts from the previous game, and hold the innings together.
Also, can Hong Kong’s bowlers dent any confidence of the India batsmen ahead of the Pakistan clash? Eshan Khan and Tanwir Afzal showed good signs against Pakistan, and a repeat effort here will bring joy to the Hong Kong fans.

Possible teams

Given the 40-degree hear, India would be wise to keep some of their first choice players fresh for tomorrow’s game against Pakistan. Rohit Sharma has spoken of his admiration of left-arm quick Khaleel Ahmed, who is in line for a debut, with Jasprit Bumrah surely to sit out as he joined the squad yesterday. Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik, Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel could all get a game as well.
India possible XI: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. KL Rahul/Ambati Rayudu, 4. Manish Pandey, 5. MS Dhoni/Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6. Axar Patel, 7. Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Shardul Thakur, 8. Kuldeep Yadav, 10. Khaleel Ahmed, 11. Yuzendra Chahal
Despite being beaten comfortably by Pakistan, Hong Kong could stick with the same team.
Hong Kong possible XI: 1. Nizakat Khan, 2. Anshuman Rath (c), 3. Babar Hayat, 4. Kinchit Shah, 5. Chris Carter, 6. Eshan Khan, 7. Aizaz Khan, 8. Scott McKechnie (wk), 9. Tanwir Afzal, 10. Ehsan Nawz, 11. Nadeem Ahmed

Dream11

This team is not set in stone. A lot will depend on the toss, as well as the team selection, particularly in India’s case.
  • MS Dhoni is the wicketkeeping option, provided he plays.
  • Rohit Sharma is a great pick, especially if India bat first. I believe both Rayudu and Pandey will get a game. Again, depending on the toss, you can play an extra India bowler if they bowl first.
  • Anshuman Rath, Aizaz Khan, Nadeem Ahmed and Eshan Khan are good options for Hong Kong.
  • Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are handy picks, as always. In this game, for now, will go with Khaleel Ahmed to have a good debut.

Stats and Facts

  • India and Hong Kong have met in one ODI, back in Asia Cup 2008. India won by 256 runs.
  • Kuldeep Yadav needs two wickets to reach 50 in ODIs. If he gets there in this game, he will become the second-quickest Indian to the mark (24 matches), behind Ajit Agarkar (23 matches).
  • Shikhar Dhawan needs one century to equal Yuvraj Singh’s tally of 14 in ODIs.

Prediction

India to win and qualify for the Super Four stage.

Asia Cup 3rd Match: Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan Player Ratings

The Comedy Channel has called. They would like to air Sri Lanka matches.

Before India step out onto the field and Pakistan break a sweat, Sri Lanka are out of the tournament.

Please, I ask that all readers watch over Russel Arnold, Daniel and Nabraiz today and make sure they are OK (that’s if you’re not blocked, of course). It’ll be nice of them to greet the team at the airport with some old Sri Lanka stats to make themselves feel better.

Unlucky Russel…

On a more serious note, is anyone surprised Sri Lanka are out? I’m not. I will gloat and say I predicted this. They need a full overhaul of players and processes when it comes to the ODI format, as they continue to disappoint. This Asia Cup exit is another embarrassing episode in a horror show since the start of 2017, especially.

But, absolutely no credit should be taken away from Afghanistan. They did just about everything right in their first game of the tournament, and are now rewarded with a spot in the Super Four stage, which is all part of their amazing 2018! This is a great time for the nation, which should be celebrated.

In this piece, the first of its kind in Asia Cup 2018, each player will be put under the CricBlog microscope. Who deserves the best and most harsh marks out of ten?

Afghanistan

Mohammad Shahzad: Gives me a good laugh with some of his strokeplay. If I were a commentator, I’d chuckle on air. He sure has his own style, and he helped Afghanistan get a solid start. 6

Ihsanullah: Some lovely shots in his stay, but got out just when Afghanistan needed to really consolidate. Nonetheless, an innings Afghanistan would be happy with. 7

Rahmat Shah: Had him in your Dream11? Good move. Solid player for Afghanistan, and played a really good innings. His score of 72 was double that of Sri Lanka’s highest scorer. As I said, make sure Russel, Daniel and Nabraiz are OK. 8.5

Asghar Afghan: The most eventful part of Asghar’s day was panicking when Mohammad Shahzad was hitting the ball in the air towards third man. Just the one run, but led his team well in the field. 1

Hashmatullah Shahidi: Decent start in the middle order, but would have liked to go on with Afghanistan on track for 270. 6

Mohammad Nabi: Absolutely superb with the ball. Hassled Sri Lanka like a child to his/her parents with McDonald’s in sight (yes, I don’t mind a little McDonald’s). 8

Najibullah Zadran: Out looking to hit out towards the end. 4

Gulbadin Naib: Another decent performance from Naib, this time with the ball. Contributed to Sri Lanka’s downfall. 7

Rashid Khan: RASHIIIIIIID. Another excellent bowling performance in the UAE. That’s 31 wickets in 13 ODIs in that part of the world for Rashid Khan. He must have been loving life when he saw Sri Lanka struggling to deal with Bangladesh’s finger spinners on Saturday. Kusal Perera helped out with a shocking swipe. 8
Aftab Alam: Steady. No wickets, but under five an over is always a good return in ODI cricket, even if it’s against Sri Lanka. 5

Mujeeb Ur Rahman: A weapon in limited overs. Simply too good for Sri Lanka. They say Afghanistan play lots of matches against the likes of Ireland and Zimbabwe. They will be hoping for more against Sri Lanka, too. Stand out ball was the one to Shanaka. 8

Sri Lanka

Kusal Mendis: More ducks present here than a river. As many half centuries in his last 21 innings as Chris Martin in his entire career. Missed a run out chance when Afghanistan were none down. 0

Upul Tharanga: Thought it was a Test match. Wasn’t too keen on running hard either, leading to the downfall of Dhananjaya de Silva. Not pretty from an experienced player. 3

Dhananjaya de Silva: Should expect his next meal to be taken of by Upul Tharanga. Things were looking promising. The six over extra cover was particularly special. Couldn’t go on. 5

Kusal Perera: Gave Rashid Khan a wicket in his first over. A poor shot again from a Sri Lanka batsman. In other news, the sky is blue and grass is green. 2

Angelo Mathews: Captain of a sinking ship. Tried what he could to lead it to shore, but to no avail. 4

Shehan Jayasuriya: More comical running from Sri Lanka. Less than 100 days till Christmas, and Sri Lanka are getting into the gifting mood. Bowled pretty well, did Jayasuriya. Perhaps should have bowled more than his six overs. 5

Thisara Perera: Expensive early on but cleaned up Afghanistan just as they were looking to launch at the end. Left with too much to do with the bat. 7.5

Dasun Shanaka: Was victim of a beauty from Mujeeb Ur Rahman. He had as much a clue about that one as my mates do about cricket (sadly)! 0

Akila Dananjaya: Strong ten overs with the ball. A good addition to their attack, but just not enough support. 7.5

Lasith Malinga: Couldn’t reach the heights of Saturday, which was always going to be a challenge in the heat of the UAE. 4

Dushmantha Chameera: Displayed pretty good pace, and finished with economical figures. He would be very dangerous if he could employ yorkers a little more. 7

So, there we have it.
Sri Lanka are out, and Bangladesh and Afghanistan are through to the Super Four stage. The Lankans’ cricket throughout this tournament certainly belonged on the Comedy Channel, and maybe they can review their performances on the plane home.
Well done Afghanistan!

Asia Cup 3rd Match: Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan Preview + Dream11

Three days into the Asia Cup and a team widely expected (not by me) to progress to the Super Four is in danger of being the first team knocked out. After two one-sided games in a tournament that needs excitement to be truly recognised, one can only hope that today’s battle delivers.

Sri Lanka is the team now under serious pressure to qualify for the Super Four. The battle on Saturday was Bangladesh vs Lasith Malinga, rather than Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, which was a huge disappointment. Their batting and fielding display would have left a park cricket side in dismay had they put on the same show – a show not worthy of international cricket. Now, with Akila Dananjaya back in the mix, Sri Lanka will have to find every ounce of quality to keep their tournament alive.

For Afghanistan, their opening game is automatically a chance to qualify for the Super Four stage. The tournament format gives very little room for error, but in Afghanistan’s case, a chance to progress with one good outing today. Their batting in the recent series in Ireland left a bit to be desired, but with more familiar conditions on offer in this tournament, they have what it takes to put Sri Lanka’s attack under pressure. Also, the spin attack of Afghanistan is the envy of even more established cricketing nations in my opinion, and will certainly have a key role to play today. Can they knock Sri Lanka out of the tournament?

Key to a Sri Lanka win

Sri Lanka’s fielding effort on Saturday resembled a basketball match rather than cricket, such was the embarrassing display. As many as three catches went down inside the opening ten overs, resulting in a failed attempt to dislodge Bangladesh cheaply after stars Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan were not in the picture.
With their tournament on the line, Sri Lanka have to display desperation in the field and take all chances that come their way. Indeed, that also comes with better support for Lasith Malinga, who bowled as if he had plenty of international cricket under his belt. Apart from Malinga, though, the other Sri Lankan bowlers conceded 228 in 39.3 overs against a Bangladesh side suffering from an awful start. The addition of Akila Dananjaya will help with this problem, assisting in maintaining the pressure on Afghanistan’s batsmen.
On the batting front, Sri Lanka’s top order failed yet again. Can they stand up and be counted now? If they don’t, and they are eliminated from the tournament in a group that is competitive yet one the Lankans should top, a few careers should be seriously put into question.

Key to an Afghanistan win

Afghanistan start this game as outsiders with the bookmakers, but the gap between the sides is not much at all.
For me, Afghanistan’s batting is key to their chances. You know what you’re going to get with their impressive bowling attack, but not so much with their batting, which was unconvincing in Ireland. How they handle Lasith Malinga and Akila Dananjaya will especially be key, as a solid start and good middle overs batting is vital to either setting or chasing a good total.
On the bowling front, Afghanistan will send down up to 30 overs of quality spin, against a side whose confidence is shot. With Sri Lanka crumbling to 60/6 against Bangladesh’s finger spinners on Saturday, a great opportunity awaits Afghanistan’s spinners who possess plenty of tricks with the ball. Can they dismantle the Sri Lankan line up?

Possible teams

Akila Dananjaya will come in for Sri Lanka, possibly at the expense of Dilruwan Perera. Niroshan Dickwella is also a chance of playing this game.
Sri Lanka possible XI: 1. Kusal Mendis, 2. Upul Tharanga, 3. Dhananjaya de Silva, 4. Kusal Perera (wk), 5. Angelo Mathews, 6. Dasun Shanaka, 7. Thisara Perera, 8. Suranga Lakmal, 9. Akila Dananjaya, 11. Amila Aponso, 11. Lasith Malinga
Afghanistan could stick with the side that won the ODI series in Ireland.
Afghanistan possible XI: 1. Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2. Ihsanullah, 3. Rahmat Shah, 4. Hasmatullah Shahidi, 5. Gulbadin Naib, 6. Asghar Afghan (c), 7. Mohammad Nabi, 8. Najibullah Zadran, 9. Rashid Khan, 10. Aftab Alam, 11. Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Dream11

With both sides having shaky batting, I think it’s a safer bet including more bowlers in your Dream11 side. Below is mine, with a few points.
  • Rashid Khan is all quality and will be a test for Sri Lanka’s batsman. He’s my captain, with Akila Dananjaya my vice captain. Lasith Malinga is also an excellent choice for C or VC, but it remains to be seen how he backs up after his effort two days ago in very hot conditions.
  • Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi are good additions to the side, so too Gulbadin Naib, Rahmat Shah and Aftab Alam who had good moments in Ireland. Also, Rahmat Shah has been dismissed for single figures only once in his last 17 innings.
  • Upul Tharanga is due a good score after his excellent domestic form. The dangerous Kusal Perera is my keeper, with Mohammad Shahzad a riskier option up top against Lasith Malinga.

Stats and Facts

  • Sri Lanka have won both their ODIs vs Afghanistan.
  • Kusal Mendis has gone 19 innings without a fifty in ODIs.
  • If Sri Lanka lose this game, their tournament is over.
  • Rashid Khan has taken 29 wickets in 11 ODIs in the UAE, at an average of 12.07.
  • Sri Lanka have won just 10 of 38 ODIs since the start of 2017.

Prediction

Expect this to be the most competitive match of the tournament so far.
Sri Lanka will be desperate to ensure they stay alive in the tournament, and Afghanistan will look to seal a Super Four spot.
In line with my predictions for the tournament, I see Sri Lanka exiting the tournament in the group stage. Afghanistan to win in a tight one!
