Why is Shreyas Iyer not playing for India A against Australia A?

India’s star batter Shreyas Iyer, who is leading the India A team against Australia A in a two-match series in Lucknow, will miss the second unofficial Test.

The team has not yet called for a replacement in the squad. As per the reports, Iyer is in contention for a middle-order berth in the upcoming two-Test series against West Indies. The series starts from October 2nd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, another report claims Iyer will miss the match due to personal reasons.

Shreyas Iyer to miss second four-day match for India A against Australia A

In Iyer’s absence, Dhruv Jurel is most likely to lead the team, “Yes, Shreyas is taking a break and has returned to Mumbai. He has informed the selectors that he won’t be able to play in the second four-day match against Australia A. However, he remains in the fray for a spot in the middle-order when the selectors meet to pick the squad for the West Indies series,” a source told the media, as reported by Times of India.

Shreyas Iyer’s stay at the crease in the first match was short-lived, as he managed just eight runs off 13 balls before being trapped lbw by Australian off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli. It was a call that many at the ground deemed harsh, with the ball seemingly drifting past leg stump.

On the Australian side, skipper Nathan McSweeney, still on the edges of national selection, will be keen to find form with the Ashes looming. The second unofficial Test between India A and Australia A will get underway at 9:30 AM IST on Tuesday, September 23, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Despite earlier assurances from the host broadcaster, the red-ball series will not have live telecast or streaming in India.

Ashes 2025: Ricky Ponting warns against wholesale changes for Australia’s top six

Ricky Ponting has thrown his weight behind Australia’s batting order, insisting there is no need to reshuffle the top six ahead of the 2025 Ashes. The former captain made it clear that despite all the noise around Marnus Labuschagne’s place, he can’t find a spot for the former world No.1 in the team for the opening Test in Perth.

Australian coach Andrew McDonald and national selection chief George Bailey have both declared that the opening rounds of the Sheffield Shield could determine Ashes picks. However, Ponting said the decision could be made now.

“Everyone’s been talking about how crucial these first four Sheffield Shield games are, particularly for some of our top-order batters, and I agree with that,” Ponting said on Monday. “But I also feel that it’s probably got almost to the point where it’s too late to be making too many big wholesale changes to the current team going into an Ashes series.”

Ricky Ponting backs current top six to perform in the 2025 Ashes series

Ponting argued that consistency matters more than tinkering with combinations. “You can’t just keep chopping and changing every time someone goes through a lean patch,” he said, pointing out that the Ashes demands mental toughness, not constant experimentation.

Labuschagne has endured a rough patch with the bat in recent months, struggling for runs across formats. However, Ponting stressed that his proven track record, particularly in Test cricket, should not be overlooked. He reminded that even great players experience dips but recover stronger when the team backs them.

At the same time, Ponting acknowledged that younger players are pushing hard for selection. “Konstas has obviously just done well. He made a hundred for Australia A over in India, which is exactly what he needed, so I can see our top order being Konstas and Khawaja.

“I think the fact that they’ve moved Green up to No.3 in the Caribbean probably suggests to me that they see him as that long-term No.3. Smith will stay at four, Head at five, and then I would keep Beau at No.6. I can’t see how they could leave Beau out of the side and keep some of the other guys in. That’s the way that I’m sort of looking at it.”

While he’s confident in this structure, Ponting did float one potential tweak: shifting dynamic No.5 Travis Head further up the order. “The other thing I thought they could do if they were worried about that (Green’s role) at all – and with our current openers who are probably not the fastest scorers – (is move Travis Head up),” he told SEN.

“Head is the second most established player in that (batting) line-up, probably behind Steve Smith, and the natural progression for players of that sort of age … you usually come into the side as a No.5 or six player, and eventually you’d work your way up and find yourself in a No.3 slot. So, they could think about doing that with Travis Head and with the way that England play their cricket, to have someone like Head coming in at No.3 and being able to put some pressure back on (could be ideal).”

Despite these tactical considerations, Ponting’s broader message was about continuity. Disrupting this combination before the Ashes, he warned, would create more uncertainty than solutions.

“This group has shown resilience before. In the biggest series, you want players who know their roles and trust each other,” he said.

The Ashes, set to begin in under two months, will pit Australia’s traditional Test strategies against England’s fearless ‘Bazball’ approach. Ponting highlighted that Australia cannot afford to second-guess itself against such an opponent. “England will come hard, no doubt. If anything, Australia needs continuity and belief to counter that,” he added.

Ponting’s stance comes as selectors face pressure to make tough calls. While Labuschagne’s lean run has triggered speculation, Ponting’s view reinforces the value of experience, unity, and stability in a high-pressure contest. For him, the bigger picture is clear, that is, trust the same six, ride out the form slumps, and enter the Ashes with stability.

PAK vs SL Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2025 Super Four 3rd Match

The 3rd match of the 2025 Asia Cup Super Four stage is a crucial one. Pakistan and Sri Lanka lost their first matches, so they are in must-win territory at Abu Dhabi.

Both teams had their moments against India and Bangladesh respectively, but ultimately lost in the key moments. Pakistan started brilliantly with the bat, but a post-10th over slowdown proved mighty costly. Also, their powerplay bowling must improve after copping an Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill onslaught in Dubai. The time is now to execute.

For Sri Lanka, that they reached 168 against Bangladesh is credit to Dasun Shanaka. More is required from the likes of Kamil Mishara and Kusal Perera, whose strike rates are in focus. Also, should Sri Lanka find room for another specialist bowling option?

Both teams have questions, and it will come down to who answers them best in this clash.

Asia Cup 2025 Super Four 3rd Match: PAK vs SL Probable Playing XIs

Pakistan raised eyebrows when they opted to drop Hassan Nawaz. They could bring him back in given the middle overs struggles against India. Also, where Mohammad Haris bats is a key topic of conversation.

Pakistan: 1. Sahibzada Farhan, 2. Fakhar Zaman, 3. Saim Ayub, 4. Hussain Talat/Hassan Nawaz, 5. Mohammad Haris (wk), 6. Salman Agha (c), 7. Mohammad Nawaz, 8. Faheem Ashraf, 9. Shaheen Shah Afridi, 10. Haris Rauf, 11. Abrar Ahmed

The make up of the Sri Lankan attack is the big question. They have a host of all-rounders and could pick another specialist bowler ahead of Kamindu Mendis.

Sri Lanka: 1. Pathum Nissanka, 2. Kusal Mendis (wk), 3. Kamil Mishara, 4. Kusal Perera, 5. Charith Asalanka (c), 6. Dasun Shanaka, 7. Wanindu Hasaranga, 8. Kamindu Mendis/Maheesh Theekshana, 9. Dunith Wellalage, 10. Dushmantha Chameera, 11. Nuwan Thushara

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Abu Dhabi Pitch Report and Weather

The average first innings score at Abu Dhabi in this tournament is 164.71. Teams batting first have won four of the seven matches. However, chasing may still prove to be important.

In T20s this year, spinners have taken 15 wickets at an average of 58.73 and economy of 8.23 in Abu Dhabi according to data from Cricmetric. Pacers have taken 99 wickets at an average of 25.89 and economy of 8.17.

Fantasy Cricket Tips for PAK vs SL: Players to Watch/Key Stats

Top Wicket-Keeper Picks:

  • Kusal Mendis has been picked in 79.78% of Dream11 teams, and with good reason. He struck an excellent half-century against Afghanistan, before he looked good again for his 25-ball 34 against Bangladesh.
  • Sahibzada Farhan will be key in providing Pakistan with a blistering start. He is coming off a half-century against India.

Key batter picks:

  • According to SPODA AI data, Pathum Nissanka is the likeliest player to make a 30+ score, with a probability of 47.89%. The SL opener has made a 30+ score in four of his past seven T20Is.
  • Between 2017 and 2022, Fakhar Zaman scored just 67 runs in seven T20Is against Sri Lanka. However, Zaman is in good enough form now to overcome that poor record. The left-hander has 105 runs in this Asia Cup at an average of 35.00 and strike rate of 138.15.

Top all-rounder picks:

  • Wanindu Hasaranga has a terrific record against Pakistan with 14 wickets in five matches at an average of 9.07 and economy of 6.35. SPODA AI data provides a 58.02% probability that he will take 2+ wickets. The legspinner will be key in the middle overs; a period where Pakistan have struggled for momentum in this Asia Cup.
  • Saim Ayub has struggled for runs in this tournament, but remains a solid fantasy pick due to his bowling contributions.

Key bowler picks:

  • Nuwan Thushara has been excellent with the new ball. Five of his six wickets in this Asia Cup have come in the powerplay, where he is averaging 14.2 with an economy of 6.45.
  • Haris Rauf has taken five wickets in two matches against Sri Lanka. Also, Rauf will be key on a ground where pacers have taken more wickets than spinners in T20s this year.
  • Shaheen Shah Afridi has mustered 302 Dream11 points so far in this Asia Cup. While he isn’t at his best with the ball, Shaheen is capable of providing a crucial cameo down the order.

Other Players to Consider for your Fantasy Cricket Teams

  • Dasun Shanaka is worth a pick. His ball-striking was outstanding against Bangladesh (64 off 37 balls). Also, the makeup of the Sri Lanka attack means he needs to provide some overs as well. He took 2/21 against the Tigers.
  • Faheem Ashraf produced one of his better performances against India. He struck an 8-ball 20 and looked potent with the ball (1/31).
  • Dushmantha Chameera is Sri Lanka’s equal second-highest wicket-taker in the 2025 Asia Cup (5). He will bowl in the crunch overs, which increases his wicket-taking potential.

Other Stats, Facts and Matchups

  • Head-to-head: Matches 23, Pakistan 13, Sri Lanka 10.
  • Sri Lanka have won the past five T20Is against Pakistan.
  • According to SPODA AI data, Nuwan Thushara has a 21.50% chance of dismissing Sahibzada Farhan. The corresponding figures are 25.99% and 20.61% against Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub respectively.
  • Nuwan Thushara vs Fakhar Zaman in T20s: 11 balls, 13 runs, two wickets.
  • Maheesh Theekshana vs Fakhar Zaman in T20s: 21 balls, 15 runs, one wicket.
  • Kusal Mendis made two golden ducks in two T20Is against Pakistan in 2022.

Pakistan fans confident of win against India in Asia Cup Super Four

Pakistan fans are hopeful of a strong showing from their team in their upcoming Asia Cup Super Four clash against India in Dubai. It will be the second meeting between the teams in this tournament after India won the group stage game comfortably with seven wickets and 25 balls to spare.

That match was overshadowed by calls for a boycott and the non-handshake saga. This time, the focus is more on cricket, with Pakistan fans confident of a better showing from their team as the tournament reaches its business stage.

Pakistan have been under par in this tournament. Despite beating Oman with ease, they had huffed and puffed their way to 160/7. After they were brushed aside by India, Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble against the UAE, before a Shaheen Shah Afridi cameo and solid bowling performance sealed the vital victory.

Also, Pakistan have largely struggled against India in white-ball cricket in the past decade, losing 14 of 17 matches since the start of 2015. This includes six losses in eight T20Is.

Captain Salman Agha is looking forward to the challenge, but acknowledges the need for improvement.

“We are ready, we are ready for any challenge,” Salman said after their 41-run victory against UAE, as quoted by Geo News.

“We just want to play good cricket. If we play good cricket, like we have played in the last few months, I think we’ll be good against any side.

“We got the job done but we still need to improve our batting in the middle order,” Salman continued. “That’s been a concern and something we need to work on.”

Pakistan fans optimistic ahead of Super Four showdown against India

However, amid the poor record and chaotic week off the field, Pakistan fans are optimistic of a strong performance on Sunday. India’s performance against Oman has given them some hope, plus the fact Pakistan know where they need to improve.

“This Indian team can be beaten, hope Pakistan cricket team learns something from the way Oman played,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “SURPRISE FOR INDIA… Keep an eye on the TOP THREE BATTERS of Pakistan on Sunday!,” wrote another.

The match begins at 6:30pm local time and kicks off the Super Four stage. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the other two teams competing to reach next week’s Asia Cup Final.

Asia Cup 2025 Super Four schedule and fixtures

The Super Four stage of the 2025 Asia Cup has been confirmed, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to feature.

India and Pakistan looked certainties to qualify from Group A also featuring the inexperienced Oman and UAE. Pakistan had to work hard for their victory against UAE, recovering from a troublesome position to eventually win by 41 runs and seal their passage to the Super Four.

Group B, unsurprisingly, was much more unpredictable. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were competing for two spots as Hong Kong also showed excellent fight in their campaign. Sri Lanka (three wins) and Bangladesh (two wins) prevailed over Afghanistan, who couldn’t build on their first-up win over Hong Kong. Rashid Khan’s team had their chances, but Sri Lanka and Bangladesh held their nerve better in key moments.

The top two teams will contest the final, to be played on Sunday 28 September at Dubai International Stadium. Sri Lanka are the defending Asia Cup champions in the T20I format, winning the title in 2022 where they beat Pakistan in the final.

Former chief Najam Sethi reveals Pakistan could have lost up to $15 million had they boycotted the Asia Cup

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi has revealed that Pakistan stood to incur huge losses had they pulled out of the Asia Cup.

According to Pakistan, match referee Andy Pycroft played a central role in the non-handshake saga against India. They called for his removal, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected their wishes.

Pakistan threatened to boycott their match against the UAE in Dubai earlier this week, with current Chairman Mohsin Naqvi holding an emergency meeting with Sethi and Ramiz Raja to discuss a plan of action following the ICC’s decision. The match was delayed by an hour as the Pakistan team was ordered to remain in their hotel, before the PCB eventually made the decision to play on.

Najam Sethi reveals what happened behind the scenes

The leadup to the UAE-Pakistan match felt like a soap opera. Reports suggested Pakistan were all set to boycott the match, before muted videos surfaced of Naqvi in discussion with Sethi, Raja and other officials in Lahore.

Sethi revealed what happened behind the scenes. He said Naqvi had made the call to boycott the Asia Cup, and had to be advised against the decision due to the damage it would have caused for the PCB.

“In the heat of the moment, Mohsin Naqvi had decided to withdraw from the Asia Cup. My friends told me, ‘Don’t go, don’t help them.’ I wasn’t even planning to help Naqvi. I went to help the Pakistan Cricket Board,” Sethi told Samaa TV, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“If what he was attempting had succeeded, Pakistan would have suffered irreparable damage. We could have been sanctioned by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), foreign players might have refused to play in the PSL, and we stood to lose $15 million in ACC broadcasting rights.”

The match against UAE went ahead and Pakistan looked distracted. They collapsed to 93/6 and 110/7, with only Fakhar Zaman finding any rhythm among the top eight. Shaheen Shah Afridi then played a crucial cameo, smashing a 14-ball 29* to get Pakistan to a defendable 146/9. The score was eventually 41 runs too many for UAE.

Next up for Pakistan is another meeting against India, this time in the Super Four stage. Tension is high between the teams in what has been a year of geo-political hostility between the two nations. If Pakistan are to win, they need to produce much better cricket than they have so far in this Asia Cup.

IND vs OMN Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2025 12th Match

India will take on Oman, a dead rubber, in the 12th match of Asia Cup 2025. Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi will be the venue for this match and it will be played on 19th September 2025 at 8:00 PM IST. This is the last game of the league stage of Asia Cup 2025.

India has been, by far, the best side in the tournament until now. The bowlers, especially the spinners, have been in exceptional form, and the batters are yet to break a sweat in the tournament. It will surely be another walk in the park for India as the gap between the two sides in this game is just too big.

India will love to see Shubman Gill get some runs in this game just ahead of the Super Four stage. Tilak Varma (31 runs) looked in decent touch in the last game. They may also look to try their bench strength in this match. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana may get a game. Apart from that, the Indian side is looking very balanced with good batting depth and the bowlers capable of winning games in any conditions.

On the other hand, Oman are already out of the Super Four stage and this will be their last game of the tournament. Their bowlers have done well but the batters failed to get going as a unit. Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem are their most important players, while Jiten Ramanandi did well in the last game.

All in all, Oman will have to be at their best as a side for 40 overs to challenge India in this match.

Asia Cup 2025 12th Match: IND vs OMN Probable Playing XIs

India will likely rest Jasprit Bumrah, according to both Cricbuzz and ESPNcricinfo. Harshit Rana had an extended session when batting in the nets, and could play in this game. Also, India could play an additional spinner as conditions in Abu Dhabi don’t usually favour spin as much.

India: 1. Abhishek Sharma, 2. Shubman Gill, 3. Suryakumar Yadav (c), 4. Tilak Varma, 5. Shivam Dube, 6. Sanju Samson (wk), 7. Hardik Pandya, 8. Axar Patel, 9. Harshit Rana, 10. Kuldeep Yadav/Varun Chakravarthy, 11. Jasprit Bumrah/Arshdeep Singh

Oman: 1.Jatinder Singh (c), 2. Aamir Kaleem, 3. Hammad Mirza, 4. Vinayak Shukla (wk), 5. Shah Faisal, 6. Hassnain Shah, 7. Jiten Ramanandi, 8. Wasim Ali, 9. Aryan Bisht, 10. Shakeel Ahmed, 11. Samay Shirvastava

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Abu Dhabi Pitch Report and Weather

A good batting wicket but expect runs only if India bats first. There will be movement with the new ball and the batters can play their shots, especially when they get their eyes in.

Since the start of 2023, spinners average over 38 and concede more than 7.5 per over in Abu Dhabi. The corresponding figures in Dubai are less than 20 and 6.5.

India may look to bat first in this game and Oman may look to bowl first (assuming the game scenario). Expect a big score if this happens.

Fantasy Cricket Tips for IND vs OMN: Players to Watch/Key Stats

Note: Try to pick more batters and all-rounders if you are playing on Dream11. The new point system rewards the batters heavily.

Top Wicket-Keeper Picks:

  • Sanju Samson may not even get to bat but he’ll still be the preferred wicket-keeping option in this game. Oman’s Vinayak Shukla will find it difficult to score against the Indian spinners and Samson may fetch more points from his wicket-keeping alone.

Key batter picks:

  • Shubman Gill has scores of 20* and 10 in the two games so far. A big knock is just around the corner for him and this might be that game. He has been in top form in the last 10-12 months. Try him as Captain if India bats first.
  • Suryakumar Yadav will bat at three and has looked in good touch. He can score big in this game if India bats first and can be a game changer in fantasy cricket as captain.

Top all-rounder picks:

  • Aamir Kaleem will bowl four overs and open the innings for Oman. He has the best fantasy value for any player from Oman and can ideally be the only Oman player in your fantasy side.
  • Axar Patel will bowl his full quota and may even get the chance to bat. He picked up two wickets in the last game against Pakistan. He will be a must in your fantasy teams.
  • Abhishek Sharma is another must have in your fantasy teams. He can whack the bowlers left and right on his day. He can also chip in with a wicket or two if gets the chance. Try as captain in some teams if India bats first and if you want to take a big risk then you can also drop him in one or two teams.

Key bowler picks:

  • Kuldeep Yadav has seven wickets to his name in two matches. He has been in excellent form and has been picking wickets for fun. Kuldeep will be a default captain option in this game but you can take a risk on him trusting the law of averages.
  • Varun Chakaravarthy is another top C/VC choice. He picks up wickets in clusters and can fetch plenty of fantasy points on his day. Oman’s batters may find it difficult to tackle him.

Other Players to Consider for Your Fantasy Cricket Team

  • Jatinder Singh is the best batter for Oman and a popular fantasy pick for this game. But he will be against a strong India attack so it’s a 50-50 call on him.

Other picks you can consider:

  • Harshit Rana
  • Arshdeep Singh
  • Shivam Dube
  • Jiten Ramanandi
  • Shah Faisal

Will Australian bowlers play all five matches in Ashes 2025? Andrew McDonald shares thoughts

Australian coach Andrew McDonald insists the team is not panicking over captain Pat Cummins’ lower-back injury, even as concerns grow with the Ashes series just two months away. Cummins has been managing a lumbar bone stress issue that flared up during the tour of the West Indies earlier this year.

McDonald confirmed Cummins will miss the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand and India in October but remains hopeful the skipper will play a key part in the Ashes, set to begin on November 21 in Perth.

“We have got time. If it happened any closer (to the Ashes) then you would have to be making key decisions around what it all looks like,” McDonald told SEN radio, as quoted by ABC News.

“But we have got time, a lot more information to come, and as I said, we’re really hopeful that he will take a key part in the Ashes.”

Andrew McDonald says it’s unlikely Australian bowlers will play all five Ashes Tests

The captain’s workload and return plan are under close monitoring. McDonald said Cummins is currently in a rest phase, with no bowling or running, and that team management is treating his recovery with caution.

Cummins has reportedly set a loose target to resume bowling at least four to six weeks before the first Test. That would allow him time to build up workload, although there is no guarantee he will feature in every match of the five-Test series.

“From the get-go, we never really planned for five Test matches for most of our fast bowlers,” McDonald said.

“Over the last couple of years we have been lucky with shortened games early in the summer, to be able to deliver five Test matches [for a fast bowler]. We will see what that looks like for Pat.”

Australia’s pace depth has been a recurring talking point, and McDonald stressed the squad has backup options. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland are being kept ready as Cummins continues his recovery.

Still, the coach acknowledged that the timing is not ideal. “If it happened any closer to the Ashes, then you’d have to be making key decisions around what it all looks like,” McDonald said. He added there is “a lot more information to come” and expressed confidence the captain would still shoulder a big part of the series.

With the opening Test in Perth drawing near, the coming weeks will be pivotal. Australia must balance fitness management with performance demands and determine how much of the Ashes load Cummins can carry without risking further injury.

“Makes you look weak” – Harsha Bhogle’s comment on Pakistan potentially boycotting Asia Cup sparks huge reaction

Prominent commentator Harsha Bhogle has sparked further reactions in light of Pakistan potentially boycotting the Asia Cup. Their match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was delayed by an hour as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was strongly considering boycotting the tournament, according to Pakistani media reports.

PCB Chairman and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Maqvi met with former chairs Ramiz Raja and Najam Sethi in Lahore after the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed Andy Pycroft will referee the match. This was a disappointing move in the eyes of the PCB following the non-handshake saga against India, with Pakistan of the belief Pycroft had a central role.

Soon after, Naqvi confirmed Pakistan would travel to the Dubai International Stadium to play the UAE, despite Pycroft’s role as match referee. Bhogle didn’t mince his words, claiming Pakistan don’t have the standing to force any ultimatums.

“The lesson for all of us is that you must never issue an ultimatum you cannot enforce. It makes you look weak,” he wrote on X.

Ihtisham Ul Haq then released a video of team management speaking with Pycroft. According to the journalist, Pycroft apologised. Other reports suggest the PCB were looking at a fine of approximately US$16 million had they boycotted. However, the video had no sound and the conversation is yet to be verified.

Harsha Bhogle minces no words about Pakistan potentially boycotting the Asia Cup

Bhogle’s post generated 1.2 million impressions within 12 hours. Tension continues to grow between fans of the two teams ahead of their second meeting in the 2025 Asia Cup, this time in the Super Four stage on Sunday 21st September. Here are some of the reactions.

In the match itself, Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble at 93/6 in the 16th over and 110/7 in the 17th. Of the top eight batters, only Fakhar Zaman (50 off 36 balls) found any rhythm. It was Shaheen Shah Afridi’s 14-ball 29* that proved crucial in the end, taking Pakistan to 146/9 – a total that proved 41 too many for the UAE.

AFG vs SL Dream11 Prediction Possible 11 Pitch Report – Asia Cup 2025 11th Match

Group B of the 2025 Asia Cup was hard to call, and it predictably comes down to the 11th match of the tournament to decide who goes through to the Super Four.

Sri Lanka, barring a very heavy loss, are through. Afghanistan must win after their tight loss against Bangladesh. The stage is set for what promises to be a fascinating encounter with plenty at stake.

For Sri Lanka, they will want an improved performance compared to their outing against Hong Kong. They didn’t take the wickets expected of them, before toiling with the bat and getting home thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s platform and Wanindu Hasaranga’s finishing.

Afghanistan would have been disappointed not to chase down 155 against the Tigers, although it was a tricky Abu Dhabi track. There were plenty of starts, but the fall of regular wickets hurt them dearly, with Azmatullah Omarzai’s wicket in the 16th over just about sealing Afghanistan’s fate.

So, who will hold their nerve in this encounter? In an Asia Cup filled with non-cricketing news, a thriller here is just what the fans are after.

Asia Cup 2025 11th Match: AFG vs SL Probable Playing XIs

The onus is on Afghanistan’s top order to provide a better start. Maheesh Theekshana will look to test them after Nasum Ahmed caused them trouble in the last match.

Afghanistan: 1. Sediqullah Atal, 2. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3. Ibrahim Zadran, 4. Mohammad Nabi, 5. Azmatullah Omarzai, 6. Gulbadin Naib, 7. Karim Janat, 8. Rashid Khan (c), 9. Noor Ahmad, 10. AM Ghazanfar, 11. Fazalhaq Farooqi

Sheikh Zayed Stadium Abu Dhabi Pitch Report and Weather

The average first innings score at Abu Dhabi in this Asia Cup is 159.2. The team batting first has won three of the five matches. Batting first here could be an attractive proposition, especially for Afghanistan who usually win when batting first.

According to Spoda AI data, Afghanistan:

  • Score an average of 45.17 runs in the powerplay when batting first in T20s since 2019. The corresponding figure when batting second is 44.75.
  • Score an average of 67.13 runs in the middle overs when batting first in T20s since 2019. The corresponding figure when batting second is 57.78.
  • Smash an average of 48.47 runs in the death overs when batting first compared to 36.98 when batting second, although second innings usually end earlier.

Abu Dhabi track was tricky for batting in the Afghanistan-Bangladesh game. Setting a score could be a winning approach here.

Fantasy Cricket Tips for AFG vs SL: Players to Watch/Key Stats

Top wicket-keeper picks:

  • Rahmanullah Gurbaz is in need of runs. This could be the game he returns to form as he has a superb record against Sri Lanka: 6 inns, 248 runs, avg. 41.33, SR 172.22.
  • Kusal Mendis is picked in 72.23% of Dream11 teams as he bats up the order and has the wicket-keeping gloves. He averages just 18.66 in six T20Is against Afghanistan, but is capable of scoring well provided he gets through his poor matchup against Fazalhaq Farooqi (see below).

Key batter picks:

  • Pathum Nissanka is in terrific form, with consecutive half-centuries in this Asia Cup. SPODA AI data states there is a 49.27% probability that Nissanka crosses 30 runs, the highest probability of any player in this match.
  • Sediqullah Atal was dismissed first ball against Bangladesh. Despite that, he’s been in decent form, but how he fares against spin will be crucial. He averages 17.9 with a strike rate of 114.7 against spin in all T20s.
  • Kamil Mishara has been in good form of late, with scores of 20, 73*, 46* and 19 in his past four T20Is.

  • Azmatullah Omarzai is striking at 224.32 so far in this Asia Cup. He also bowls upfront with the new ball, making him a solid c/vc option.

Key bowler picks:

  • Rashid Khan has dismissed Kusal Mendis twice in 11 balls in all T20 cricket. The Afghan captain has three wickets so far in this Asia Cup and can hit a long ball down the order.
  • Noor Ahmad is a consistent wicket-taker. He has picked up eight wickets in his past five T20Is.
  • Dushmantha Chameera has taken 11 wickets in his past five T20Is. In all T20s this year, Chameera has taken 15 wickets in the death overs at a strike rate of 11.1 and impressive economy of 7.81.

  • Fazalhaq Farooqi has a dominant record against Kusal Mendis in T20Is: 22 balls, 11 runs, three wickets.
  • If Sri Lanka pick Matheesha Pathirana, he is worth considering in fantasy cricket. He has taken eight wickets in four T20Is against Afghanistan.
  • Gulbadin Naib can be used up the order and Afghanistan often look to utilise him for an over or two.
  • Mohammad Nabi bowled in the Bangladesh game and he bats in the top five. However, he has a poor record against SL (69 runs, avg. 13.80).
