Pressure on India to move clear of NZ in WTC | India will be looking to move clear of New Zealand in the World Test Championship

After achieving a clean sweep win against West Indies, New Zealand has drawn level with Australia in World Test Rankings. West Indies collapsed in the Test match and NZ won by an innings and 12 runs, which eventually lifted the Black Caps to 116 points which is the same as Australia. However, the Aussies is still at the top just by decimal points.

NZ has moved England to fourth position after India but it only gets interesting here after as Indian and Australia both gear up for upcoming Test series this week.

“It does sound pretty cool. I didn’t realise that until this morning. We have been playing some good cricket as of late in our conditions, and away for that matter, and it’s a pretty cool thing”, said Tom Latham in the post match presentation as New Zealand’s stand-in captain while Kane Williamson is on paternity leave.

The World Test Championship that is scheduled for June 2021 in Lord’s seems to have pushed the teams to perform. New Zealand can jump on top if they win the two-Test series against Pakistan in December and will be needing another series sweep to be able to participate in the Test Championship finale.

As a result, India will need to perform well in Australia as New Zealand are in fine form. As the qualification criteria has changed from absolute points to a percentage of points contested, India will need five wins or four wins and three draws to take them clear of New Zealand. Scenarios and details here.
