There is no 50-over World Cup approaching soon. Any ODI Championship? Not yet. So, there isn’t a huge amount of context to this ODI series.

However, don’t tell that to South Africa and their fans. Devoid of any series win since their 3-0 triumph over Sri Lanka nearly a year ago, this is their final chance to pick up a series win in a summer that has been “close, yet so far”.

Their capitulations in two of the three T20Is, as well as Kagiso Rabada’s groin injury, is cause for concern. The reliance on Quinton de Kock is palpable, which makes his battle with Mitchell Starc potentially series-defining if no one else steps up as needed.

Australia are in a pretty good place, despite their last ODI assignment being a 2-1 series loss in India. However, they took a 1-0 lead and looked good for a series win. The key question here will be whether they can take the confidence from the T20Is into the ODIs, in the quest to continue the winning momentum.

SA vs AUS 1st ODI Preview Dream11: SA rely too much on de Kock.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

  • David Warner, who is coming two consecutive 50+ scores in the T20Is, needs one century to go outright second in the most ODI hundreds list for Australia.
  • Quinton de Kock scored 107, 11 and 69 in the recent ODI series against England. He is South Africa’s most important player.
  • Faf du Plessis has the most runs in South Africa-Australia ODIs of any active player (1080, avg. 54). However, he is rested for this series – David Warner is next with 943 at 47.15.
  • Aaron Finch and Steve Smith, who both had a solid T20I series, make up Australia’s crucial top three. Smith had a fine tour of India, where he scored 98 and 131. Aaron Finch also scored a century in that series.
  • Marnus Labuschagne also enjoyed a strong start to his ODI career in India: Scores of 46 and 54. Also, he scored 364 runs (avg. 60.66) in the 2019 Marsh Cup – Australia’s domestic one day competition.
  • Temba Bavuma missed the T20I series with his hamstring injury. South Africa need him: his last six scores in ODIs and T20Is: 98, 21, 29, 43, 31 and 49.
  • Kyle Verreynne is a chance of making his ODI debut. Can he build on recent starts in List A cricket? 13, 11, 25, 34.
  • Ashton Agar took eight wickets in the T20I series.
  • Andile Phehlukwayo has a good record vs Australia: 13 wickets in seven games (avg. 22.69).
  • Mitchell Starc has dismissed Quinton de Kock four times in the last six white-ball meetings between the teams.
  • Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi will be required to carry the Proteas attack in the absence of Kagiso Rabada. Nortje has eight wickets in four ODIs, while Ngidi has taken 15 wickets in his last seven white-ball matches.
  • Adam Zampa has taken 23 wickets in his last 13 white-ball matches, across BBL09, India ODIs and South Africa T20Is.

Stats and Facts

  • Both teams are locked at 48 wins each (with three ties and one NR) in 100 ODI meetings.
  • South Africa have won eight of the last nine ODIs vs Australia, including the final league game of the 2019 World Cup.
  • Bangladesh and Zimbabwe played the last two ODIs at Paarl. The seamers did the damage, taking 23 wickets at a combined average of 27.95 compared to spinners’ tally of nine at 46.44.

Key to a South Africa win

Quinton de Kock is undoubtedly key. He sets the tone, where others can then follow on the good work. However, the others have not stepped up as they should lately, and with some experience missing, the likes of David Miller and Temba Bavuma (if fit) will be crucial.

Also, can South Africa get the better of Australia’s top order? South Africa’s best chance of winning is if they can get into the middle order of Australia as quickly as possible, building further pressure in the process.

Key to an Australia win

David Warner is in terrific touch and loves played South Africa. If he, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith set the tone, Australia have some finishing ability in the likes of Mitch Marsh and Alex Carey in the middle to heap further hurt on the Proteas.

Also, Australia could go a long way to winning if Mitchell Starc wins the battle with Quinton de Kock. With the likes of Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar bowling well, Australia can then heap further pressure on a shaky Proteas’ batting lineup.

Possible Playing 11

Some news faces are expected in the South Africa team with Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen rested, and Kagiso Rabada injured. It remains to be seen whether Temba Bavuma has recovered adequately from his hamstring injury to play in this one.

South Africa: 1. Quinton de Kock (c & wk), 2. Temba Bavuma/Janneman Malan, 3. Heinrich Klaasen, 4. Jon-Jon Smuts, 5. David Miller, 6. Kyle Verreynne, 7. Andile Phehlukwayo, 8. Lutho Sipamla, 9. Lungi Ngidi, 10. Anrich Nortje, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

The big question for Australia is who plays as the third seamer. Josh Hazlewood was excellent in his opening five overs in Benguluru, going for just 10 and providing a threat.

Australia: 1. Aaron Finch (c), 2. David Warner, 3. Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5. Mitchell Marsh, 6. Alex Carey (wk), 7. Ashton Agar, 8. Mitchell Starc, 9. Pat Cummins, 10. Kane Richardson/Josh Hazlewood, 11. Adam Zampa

Paarl Pitch Report and Conditions

Pacers have enjoyed bowling at Paarl in the last two ODIs. However, with very hot and windy conditions in Paarl, the pitch could be quite dry, with some turn available for the spinners.

South Africa have an excellent recent record vs Australia. However, the Aussies are looking more confident and settled right now, and look good for a win.
