Sri Lanka will be facing Bangladesh in a must-win encounter for both sides in the Group B fixture of the Asia Cup on Thursday. Both the sides lost their respective games to Afghanistan and that has put them in a spot of bother. The match will be played in the Dubai International Stadium as the tournament nears the conclusion of its initial round. The two sides are coming into this game on the back of a thoroughly crushing defeat.

More than the loss, it was their dismal performances that would have hurt these teams following their respective first matches. The Lankans and the Bangladeshi units have tremendous room to make some tangible improvement in their performances. Whoever doesn’t can kiss their Asia Cup 2022 campaign goodbye.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne had shown some fine resistance amidst Sri Lanka’s horrific batting performance against Bangladesh. However, the outing in totality was so poor that it will be unwise to draw strong conclusions from that particular game. The playing XI has enough talent in it to topple a struggling Bangladeshi side and hence one can expect an unchanged Lankan team in this game.

• Sri Lanka recorded a thumping victory in their last T20I vs Bangladesh as they chased down 172 runs at Sharjah in the T20 World Cup last year. Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa starred in that encounter with scores of 80* and 53 respectively to take the Lankans over the finishing line.
• Dasun Shanka has been in terrific touch with the bat this year. He has notched 308 runs at an average of 38.50 and strike rate of 144.60 in 12 T20Is in 2022.
• Danushka Gunathalika has arguably failed to justify the team management’s trust in him lately. With only 127 runs in 10 innings in 2022, the 31-year-old will be edging to get back in the groove in this crunch encounter.
• Maheesh Theekshana has an impeccable economy rate of 5.93 as he has picked eight scalps in eight T20Is in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) so far. He will play an integral role in Sri Lanka’s bowling effort in this match, and will look to emulate Mujeeb ur Rahman’s spell in the powerplay against Bangladesh.
• Wanindu Hasaranga has been in some good wicket-taking form with 11 dismissals in six T20Is in 2022. The leg-spinner will again hold the key as Sri Lanka will look to restrict Bangladesh to a modest total on a tricky surface.

Bangladesh:

• Shakib Al Hasan has taken 12 wickets in eight T20Is against Sri Lanka at an incredible bowling average and strike rate of 13.08 and 12.50 respectively. He has also maintained a tight economy rate of 6.28 against the Lankans.
• Can Shakib improve on his poor batting record against SL? He has scored just 154 runs in eight matches at an average of 19.25 and strike rate of 111.59.
• Mushfiqur Rahim’s form in T20Is might concern the Bangladeshi batting unit. He has recorded an average of merely 17.83 in his last 15 T20Is. The talks of him being promoted to the top of the order in the Asia Cup hasn’t really materialized either.
• With nine wickets in six games, Mosaddek Hossain has really turned a new leaf with respect to his T20I bowling credentials this year. One can expect him to don an integral role in Thursday’s encounter. He was also in the runs against Afghanistan.
• Mustafizur Rahman has not been amongst wickets whilst bowling in the UAE. The left-arm pacer has only two scalps to his name at a bowling average and strike rate of 75 and 45 respectively in five games in the country.
• Mahmudullah has accumulated 620 runs at an average of 22.14 in 33 T20Is since the onset of 2021. However, he would want to score these runs at a better pace as his strike rate reads an underwhelming 105.31 and 107.83 in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

• Wanindu Hasaranga vs Mushfiqur will be a key battle. In 196 balls against legspin in T20Is, Rahim has been dismissed 13 times at an average of 15.2 and strike rate of 100.5.

One should not look forward to a high-scoring match given that the first innings average score in this stadium is a partly 142. A clear weather is expected during the game with the temperature hovering around 34 degrees Celsius. Overall, a competitive game with a fine battle between the bat and the ball is on the cards for the spectators, but expect the chasing team to have an advantage.
