If a different time, an ODI series with a T20 World Cup just around the corner might not have gained too much attention. However, things are different with the ODI Super League, and this series is proof.

Both Sri Lanka and South Africa are in need of Super League points to enhance their prospects of direct qualification to the 2023 World Cup. Sri Lanka have struggled both on and off the field, culminating in just two wins out of 11 completed ODIs this year. Their opponents have also had to deal with off-field issues – most recently and notably revelations on coach Mark Boucher – so they too need to hit the ground running in this series.

South Africa won 3-2 in Sri Lanka in 2018. Both sides will be looking for a good performance upfront to set the series up; a three-match duel that provides an opportunity for a number of players to step up.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Sri Lanka:

  • Avishka Fernando will be key at the top for Sri Lanka. The opener has a good record at the R Premadasa Stadium (6 inns, 254 runs, avg. 42.33, SR 83.00). Against South Africa, Fernando has scored 101 runs in five ODIs at an average of 20.20.
  • Charith Asalanka was one of the real positives of Sri Lanka’s recent series against India. The left-hander scored 127 in the three ODIs at an average of 42.33. Can he back it up with another solid display here?
  • Dhananjaya de Silva’s experience needs to come to the fore. The all-rounder has has 13 ODIs worth of experience against the Proteas, but averages just 22.84 with the bat (297 runs). However, he did score 84 in South Africa’s last tour of Sri Lanka, back in 2018 (total of 124 runs in three matches in that series at an average of 41.33).
  • Akila Dananjaya has enjoyed success vs South Africa. In the 2018 series, Akila took 14 wickets in the five matches at an average of just 17.85. Also, he enjoys bowling on this ground, with 17 wickets in seven ODIs at an average of 17.17.
  • Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga have been shining lights for Sri Lanka in 2021. Chameera has taken 30 wickets in 20 white-ball internationals this year, while Hasaranga won player of the T20I series against India recently. Key bowlers.

South Africa:

  • Janneman Malan scored 177* in his last ODI, vs Ireland. He is averaging 120.75 in seven ODIs to date, with two centuries and two half-centuries. However, this will be his first ODI in Asia, so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts.
  • Aiden Markram had a poor series in Sri Lanka in 2018 (23 runs, avg. 7.66). He has improved since then, so he will be keen to produce the goods today.
  • Rassie van der Dussen averages 74.53 in 26 ODIs (959 runs). He has scored one half-century in his two ODIs vs Sri Lanka to date (total of 82 runs, avg. 41.00).
  • Kyle Verreynne has two half-centuries to his name in five ODI innings.
  • Can Kagiso Rabada lead the way with the ball for the Proteas? The pacer has 23 wickets in 15 ODIs vs Sri Lanka (avg. 27.69), including six scalps in four matches in Sri Lanka in 2018 (avg. 28.33).
  • Can Tabraiz Shamsi transfer his incredible T20I form to the ODIs? Shamsi took six wickets in three ODIs in Sri Lanka in 2018, including a haul of 4/33. He will be key in the middle overs.

Possible Playing 11

According to reports, Kusal Perera may not line up in this match as he works to build up fitness.

Sri Lanka: 1. Avishka Fernando, 2. Minod Bhanuka (wk), 3. Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 4. Dhananjaya de Silva, 5. Charith Asalanka, 6. Dasun Shanaka (c), 7. Wanindu Hasaranga, 8. Chamika Karunaratne, 9. Akila Dananjaya, 10. Dushmantha Chameera, 11. Praveen Jayawickrama

South Africa are without Quinton de Kock, David Miller and Lungi Ngidi for this ODI series. Temba Bavuma could open with Janneman Malan, with Markram coming in at three. There is a possibility however that Markram could open.

South Africa: 1. Janneman Malan, 2. Aiden Markram, 3. Temba Bavuma (c), 4. Rassie van der Dussen, 5. Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6. Kyle Verreynne, 7. Dwaine Pretorius/Andile Phehlukwayo, 8. George Linde, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Anrich Nortje, 11. Tabraiz Shamsi

R Premadasa Stadium Colombo Pitch Report and Weather

Don’t be surprised if this Colombo surface offers plenty of turn for the spinners, which was the case in Sri Lanka’s recent series against India. With South Africa in town, the home side will look to gain an advantage via their spin options.

Both the team batting first and second have won five games out of the last 10 here. In the recent India series, the chasing team won all three ODIs, with the average first innings score reading 254.

However, there is a strong chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, which has been the case over recent weeks.

Match Prediction

An interesting match ahead between two capable but inconsistent teams. If the weather allows for a result, Sri Lanka’s home advantage might very well count for plenty in turning conditions.
