After a difficult start to IPL 2023, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have found life. Both teams have won their last two fixtures, with the goal of a coveted third straight victory to enter the top half of the table.

Such a scenario is similar to what SRH faced last season. After a bumpy start, they enjoyed a bit of a resurgence through the middle part of the campaign, and Aiden Markram’s team will be after something similar. Harry Brook announced himself to the IPL in wonderful fashion, with eyes now set to be on how he and his teammates tackle MI’s spinners.

For MI, their ability to chase is clear, but whether they can defend will be key. Jofra Archer’s availability is still up in the air, but if the likes of Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma can continue their recent form, a big score is possible.

Mayank Agarwal’s form is a worry for SRH. One option they have is elevating Abhishek Sharma, who is a strong spin-hitter, to open with Harry Brook. Brook can target the pacers, while Abhishek can go after the spinners. However, Hyderabad may not want to bat Agarwal in the middle overs, nor drop him just yet.

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

• Harry Brook smashed 100* off 55 balls against KKR. 66 of these runs came against pace off just 26 balls.
• Aiden Markram played magnificently against KKR (50 off 26 balls). How he also fares against spin will be interesting to see, as he has been dismissed twice for just 23 runs in 18 balls this season.
• In T20s this year, Markram has smashed 540 runs at an average of 38.57 and strike rate of 141.36.
• Talking about playing spin, Abhishek Sharma is SRH’s key man. Since the start of 2022, Abhishek has struck 187 runs against spin at a strike rate of 164.00 in the IPL.
• Marco Jansen has taken four wickets in two matches this season. All four have come in the powerplay, where he is conceding just five runs per over.
• Since the start of 2022, Rohit Sharma has scored just 43 runs off 62 deliveries against left-arm seam in the IPL. He has been dismissed twice, so Jansen’s battle with the MI captain is key.
• Mayank Markande has been a gem so far for SRH. He has taken 4/15 and 2/27.

Mumbai Indians:

• Rohit Sharma has a modest record against SRH. He averages just 20.31 in 19 matches. He does, however, have solid numbers against Bhuvneshwar Kumar: 48 balls, 65 runs, one dismissal.
• Ishan Kishan was at his best against KKR. He smashed 58 off 25 balls, including 24 off 10 against spin.
• Against SRH, Kishan has scored 229 runs at an average of 28.63 and strike rate of 132.37.
• Tim David is striking at 135.84 so far in IPL 2023, with signs of his best against KKR. Last season, he hammered 46 off 18 balls vs SRH.
• David has thumped 36 off just 11 balls against T Natarajan in the IPL without dismissal. He has also struck 31 off 15 against Bhuvneshwar Kumar in all T20s without dismissal.
• Tilak Varma is MI’s leading run-scorer so far in IPL 2023 (177) at an average of 59.00 and strike rate of 150.00.
• Piyush Chawla has been impressive this season (1/33, 3/22 & 1/19 in his past three games). He has a good record against Rahul Tripathi, with total figures of 2/7 off eight balls.

• SRH should try Washington Sundar in the powerplay. He has total figures of 2/25 off 26 balls against Rohit Sharma in the IPL. Also, Ishan Kishan strikes at just 100 against him (40 off 40 balls).

Punjab scored 143/9 on this ground on April 10, but that score did not reflect how good the pitch was for batting. Shikhar Dhawan hit 99*, and SRH chased the score down easily with 17 balls to spare. Rahul Tripathi starred with 74 off 48 balls.
