The season promised so much more for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings. For SRH, the performances of their talented, fearless uncapped cricketers has been a shining light, with Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi and Umran Malik all enjoying breakthrough seasons. For PBKS, Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh have a death-bowling partnership to be proud of, while Shikhar Dhawan has crossed 400 runs for the seventh-consecutive season.

However, it all counts to nil as far as IPL 2022 is concerned. The final match of the league stage is a dead rubber, courtesy of the inconsistency both teams have shown throughout the season, albeit in different fashion. Punjab were never able to win consecutive matches, and Hyderabad had either a string of defeats or a string of wins.

This would particularly hurt for Punjab. They had arguably one of the best auction performances out of the 10 franchises, but they will miss out on the playoffs yet again, stretching their drought to eight years. There is hope now that they are building a team capable of achieving more, and will look to finish the season on a high before planning begins for IPL 2023.

• Rahul Tripathi’s 393 is the most runs by an SRH player this season. He has struck these runs at an average of 39.30 and strike rate of 161.72. He has struck 127 runs against spin at an average of 63.50 and strike rate of 151.19.
• Abhishek Sharma has also been one of the positives for SRH. He has struck seven 30+ scores in 13 matches this season, including 31 off 25 vs PBKS. Also, he has a strike rate of 164.77 against spin, compared to 119 against pacers.
• Nicholas Pooran has a strike rate of 154 against Rahul Chahar in T20s. He struck 35* (30) against PBKS earlier this season, part of 301 runs in IPL 2022 at an average of 43.00 and strike rate of 149.00.
• Aiden Markram struck an unbeaten 27-ball 41 vs PBKS earlier this season. Last game, he scored just 2, which broke a run of a double figure score in every game before that. In his previous seven knocks, Markram struck 68*, 41*, 56, 17, 42, 21 and 32.
