Dwayne Leverock, the former Bermuda cricketer, has stood strong on his belief that his catch vs India in 2007 remains the best in World Cup history.
The 2019 Cricket World Cup has seen some outstanding catches to date, with the likes of Ben Stokes, Quinton de Kock, Sheldon Cottrell, Imran Tahir, Ravindra Jadeja, Martin Guptill and Steve Smith lighting up the tournament with spectacular grabs.
However, Gutpill’s amazing catch against Australia to dismiss Steve Smith saw Leverock break his silence to the Bermudan media.
“Yeah, they are magnificent catches”, said Leverock. “I am so happy for them that they now sit behind me in regards to best ever World Cup catches.”
Leverock was obviously referring to his one-handed catch at slip to dismiss Robin Uthappa in the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. When questioned by the media on whether his catch really is the best, Leverock grew more animated.
“You have to remember the batsman I took the catch off,” said Leverock. “Kolkata Knight Riders fans would have absolutely loved for me to be in the opposition team in this year’s IPL when Robin Uthappa was auditioning for the Test team. That crucial game against Mumbai Indians where Uthappa played out maidens and dots made people remember me. It made people wish I was standing in the circle waiting to pouch another blinder. I am still remembered twelve years later.”
Leverock wasn’t finished there.
“People thought I wouldn’t be capable to grab a catch like that. I proved everyone wrong. Stokes, de Kock, Cottrell, Guptill, Tahir, Smith, Jadeja and co. all took decent catches, but was anyone surprised? The 2007 World Cup is considered to be one of the worst World Cups by many. If it wasn’t for me, it would have been even worse. Please, show man some respect.”
That was the last time that Bermuda have participated in a World Cup. Leverock wishes all teams the best for this tournament, and has congratulated Stokes, Cottrell and Guptill in particular for getting close to his brilliance.
“I am really enjoying this World Cup so far”, said Leverock. “It is really nice for the little guys like Ben Stokes, Sheldon Cottrell and Martin Guptill to be spoken in the same breath as me. I congratulate them for taking one of the best catches in World Cup history. Behind me, of course.”
Before anyone else could ask a question, Leverock stormed out of the room.
“I won’t ever be topped,” he said.
