After months of discussions between the BCCI and UAE Cricket Board amid the coronavirus pandemic and ICC World T20, IPL 2020 finally got underway on a surprisingly green-looking surface at Abu Dhabi. This edition is like no other, with the usual fanfare in stadiums not present due to a pandemic. However, the fanfare was in spades on Twitter as the tournament began.
The build up was huge
IPL fans couldn’t contain their excitement in the hours leading up to the IPL 2020 opener between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Insights, humour and sheer emotion were all present in equal measure.
The great MS Dhoni back in action
MS Dhoni, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, donned the yellow once again. His fans, who have adored him over the years, took the opportunity to voice their joy at his appearance on their screens.

Simulated crowd noise receives mixed reactions
With no crowds present at ‘El Classico’, broadcasters added simulated crowd noise so the experience isn’t too different for the viewer. It was received with mixed reviews.
The Dream11 IPL is underway, and it promises to be one of the most open tournaments yet. All eight teams are capable of producing wonders on their day, and it will be interesting to see who performs best. For now, everyone can rejoice in more cricket on our screens after a four-month layoff due to COVID-19.
