West Indies v India 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction. WI vs IND 1st ODI Preview Dream11 Prediction August 8th 2019
Life after the 2019 World Cup begins for two sides who fell short of what they wanted to achieve in the showpiece tournament.
West Indies perhaps disappointed the most. They were picked by many as dark horses for the title, after showing up England at times at home earlier in 2019, in conjunction with big names returning to the fold. It didn’t materialise, winning their final game against Afghanistan after going winless right throughout the campaign after their first up thrashing of Pakistan. Jason Holder returns to instil some calm after a second successive 3-0 series loss to India in T20Is, and West Indies will want a return to the optimism they felt earlier in 2019.
India’s four-year journey to the 2023 World Cup begins here. Reliance on their top three remains the case, as seen in that dreaded World Cup match, but it is a significant opportunity for certain players to stake their claim. The number four position still remains unanswered, so it’s up to KL Rahul to make it his own (if India don’t decide to place Kohli at four). Also, the absence of MS Dhoni means Rishabh Pant’s time is now to make the mark in ODI Cricket that millions expect of him. Will India continue their winning form from the T20Is?

Key to a West Indies win
Early wickets were a significant problem for West Indies in the T20Is. Five wickets in the powerplay of the first T20I was followed by two and three in the second and third respectively, always playing catch up as a result. With Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar excellent in ODI powerplays (as evident in New Zealand earlier in 2019), West Indies need to ensure they aren’t playing catch up in the middle overs against India’s spinners. Will Chris Gayle have one last hurrah in ODIs? Who will take their opportunity opening with him? Can Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer repeat their heroics from when they toured India last year?
Also, pace is likely to be theme of West Indies’ attack. Sharp, aggressive bowling will be the order of the day against India’s prolific top three, which welcomes back Shikhar Dhawan after being ruled out for the World Cup after the Australia game. A key avenue to victory will be how early and well the Windies target India’s middle order, of which the likes of KL Rahul, Kedar Jadhav (if picked) and Rishabh Pant have points to prove.
Key to an India win
Even with Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s best bowler, rested from this series, India still possess a very capable bowling attack. Chris Gayle, looking at the damage he caused against England earlier in 2019, is still capable of sending the ball miles – which is something India will want to avoid. The key for the Indians will be forcing Shai Hope to rebuild early, which can bring about dot balls given Hope was the highest dot ball exponent in the opening 10 overs of matches in the World Cup. With the spinners capable of middle overs wickets, regular wickets will halt the Windies’ hopes of a big finish to their innings.
Also, big games from India’s top three will set them up nicely. However, what will really deliver satisfaction is an excellent middle order effort – whether it be rebuilding the innings or finishing it off strongly. Shikhar Dhawan’s form before and after the World Cup has been under-par, so India will be hoping he can provide a strong start – along with Rohit and Virat that the middle order can build off well. Indeed, the key question will be how well India deal with West Indies’ pace and force them to turn to a Plan B that was often non-existent in the World Cup.
Pitch and conditions
Morning showers are forecast for Guyana, which could make chasing an attractive prospect. However, the slowness of the pitch could make run-scoring a challenge in the second innings. It will certainly be an interesting decision for whoever wins the toss.
Possible Playing 11
West Indies could look at playing Roston Chase as their only spinner. Also, it remains to be seen who partners Chris Gayle at the top – John Campbell or Evin Lewis.
West Indies: 1. Chris Gayle, 2. Evin Lewis/John Campbell, 3. Shai Hope (wk), 4. Shimron Hetmyer, 5. Nicholas Pooran, 6. Roston Chase, 7. Jason Holder (c), 8. Keemo Paul, 9. Kemar Roach, 10. Oshane Thomas, 11. Sheldon Cottrell
India have some questions regarding their XI. Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer and Kedar Jadhav are fighting for a spot. The Indians could give the spot to Pandey, given he was preferred for the T20Is. Also, India could look to play one of Yuzvendra Chahal or Kuldeep Yadav as the second spinner with Ravindra Jadeja.
India: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. KL Rahul, 5. Manish Pandey, 6. Rishabh Pant (wk), 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9. Mohammed Shami, 10. Khaleel Ahmed, 11. Kuldeep Yadav/Yuzvendra Chahal

Stats and Facts
- India thrashed West Indies in their match in the 2019 World Cup.
- Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer were impressive in India last year, helping West Indies to tie and win a game in their 5-match series.
- Chris Gayle was man of the series at home vs England earlier in 2019. He needs 12 runs to overtake Brian Lara as the West Indies’ most prolific ODI batsman ever (10,405 is the current record).
Match Prediction
West Indies will be out to put a better fight than on display in the T20Is. Given what they showed against England earlier in the year, they are most capable. However, India have that extra edge in the top order and spin department that could prove vital.
