Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign is on life support. Considered one of the contenders for the title, Babar Azam’s team has suffered two heartbreaking last-ball defeats in a row, bringing to life some of the pre-tournament concerns around this team.

First, the reliance on Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan have made scores of 32/2 and 28/2 in the powerplay, meaning they are behind the eight-ball early. Second, their inability to close out matches. Against India, they had the game in their grasp. So too Zimbabwe. Now, they no longer have qualification in their own hands. They must win three, and hope other results go their way.

On paper, this looks to be a good matchup against Netherlands. However, given how Pakistan have batted, no one can put it past the impressive Dutch attack to cause them problems on the bouncy Perth pitch. Even the strong India batting lineup took their time to get going against Scott Edwards’ team, with Suryakumar Yadav’s superb knock taking the game away.

The key question for Netherlands is whether they have enough runs. But, as Zimbabwe showed, you can restrict Pakistan to a low score, especially if you can break through the opening combination early. If they can, the Dutch can keep their semi-final hopes alive, while ending Pakistan’s.

PAK vs NED Possible Playing XI

Pakistan could look to play Asif Ali in place of Haider Ali.

Pakistan: 1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2. Babar Azam (c), 3. Shan Masood, 4. Iftikhar Ahmed, 5. Shadab Khan, 6. Mohammad Nawaz, 7. Asif Ali/Haider Ali, 8. Mohammad Wasim, 9. Haris Rauf, 10. Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11. Naseem Shah

Netherlands could look at playing the same XI, but Stephen Myburgh is available as an opening option.

Netherlands: 1. Max O’Dowd, 2. Vikramjit Singh/Stephen Myburgh, 3. Bas de Leede, 4. Colin Ackermann, 5. Tom Cooper, 6. Scott Edwards (c & wk), 7. Tim Pringle, 8. Logan van Beek, 9. Shariz Ahmad, 10. Fred Klaassen, 11. Paul van Meekeren

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Pakistan:

  • Cometh the hour, cometh Babar Azam? The Pakistan captain hit three consecutive fifties in an ODI series against Netherlands earlier this year.
  • Pakistan also need Mohammad Rizwan to deliver. In 39 T20s this year, Rizwan has struck 1,660 runs at an average of 53.54 and strike rate of 127.69.
  • Shan Masood has held things together after low scores from the openers. Pakistan’s number three has made scores of 52* and 44 in this tournament, part of 1,556 runs in all T20s this year.
  • Shadab Khan enjoyed the bounce on offer at Perth. The legspinner took 3/23 vs Zimbabwe, including two left-handers. Also, Shadab could be key with the bat. Pakistan may bat him at four, where he has a good record in T20s: 21 inns, 585 runs, avg. 27.86, SR 156.84.
  • Watch out for Mohammad Wasim. The pacer took wickets at all stages of the innings against Zimbabwe, where he used the bouncer and yorker to great effect to finish with 4/24.
  • Naseem Shah was player of the match in Pakistan’s last ODI against Netherlands. He took 5/33. Mohammad Wasim took 4/36 in the same game.

Netherlands:

  • Max O’Dowd is the second-highest run-scorer in this T20 World Cup (153) at an average of 38.25 and strike rate of 123.38. O’Dowd had a poor ODI series against Pakistan earlier in 2022, where he made just five runs in three matches.
  • Vikramjit Singh scored two half-centuries in that three-match ODI series. But, he has struggled for form so far in T20s.
  • Bas de Leede can exploit Pakistan’s middle order if they are in too early. The seamer has taken nine wickets in five matches in this tournament, and he can enjoy the bounce.
  • Paul van Meekeren’s battle with the Pakistan top order is worth the price of admission alone. The seamer has taken total figures of 3/30 in 42 balls in the powerplay in this World Cup.
  • Tim Pringle has taken three wickets at an economy of just 5.62 in this World Cup. Can he build enough pressure so the seamers can pounce?

Other Stats and Facts

  • This will the first T20I between Pakistan and Netherlands since the 2009 World Cup. Pakistan won by 82 runs.
  • The two teams contested an ODI series earlier this year. Pakistan won 3-0, but won the third ODI by just nine runs.
  • Pakistan have never won a T20I in Australia. They have lost five, with one no-result.
  • Shaheen Shah Afridi is wicketless so far in this tournament.
  • Although Babar Azam has good numbers against left-arm seam this year, he has had trouble against the inswinging delivery. If Fred Klaasen can swing the ball early, he’s in the game.

Optus Stadium Perth Pitch Report and Weather

The Perth pitch has been magnificent in this World Cup. We have seen great battles between bat and ball, with seamers, spinners and batsmen enjoying periods of dominance. The average first innings score is just 133, with the chasing team winning two of the three games so far.

There is a small chance of afternoon showers, but there should be no major interruptions.
