The two Melbourne-based franchises in the league  – Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades – are set to merge together as one Melbourne-based franchise from the next edition of the Big Bash League.

According to Tom Morris for SEN Cricket, the two franchises will merge, and a new Victorian franchise will participate in the league. The Victorian cricket staff were informed on Tuesday about this merger.

Due to Cricket Australia’s BBL rules, the franchise can’t be called Victoria. It will be called ‘Melbourne XYZ,’ as the nickname is yet to be finalised.

SEN Cricket also reported that the players were stunned and frustrated as they were not informed about this development till 7 PM AEST when the backroom staff were informed around mid-afternoon.

Also, other states, including New South Wales and Queensland, are reportedly frustrated by the lack of consultation regarding the big move.

First step towards privatisation in the BBL? Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades to merge

This might be the first step or the stepping stone for privatisation in the Big Bash League (BBL), as Cricket Victoria is committed to selling its second license entirely. More from SEN Cricket said that the second Victorian franchise will be sold as soon as possible and we can see a private investment in the Big Bash League.

As of now, the 10 contracted players from both the Stars and the Renegades will form the core of the new Melbourne franchise. It will be interesting to see what happens with the uncontracted players and venues like the Junction Oval, Marvel Stadium, and GMHBA Stadium.

Melbourne Renegades won the BBL title back in 2018/19 while the Stars were still looking for their maiden BBL title.
