Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly on track to acquire the services of Hardik Pandya for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) and beyond. The all-rounder looks set to leave the Mumbai Indians (MI) after a difficult few seasons as captain, including a ninth-placed finish in 2026.

Hardik needs a fresh start and KKR could just be the place where he rediscovers his best form – both as a player and captain. In this article, we will look at five reasons why.

Why KKR are right to pursue Hardik Pandya: A look at 5 reasons why

1. KKR need a leader

KKR haven’t been the same since Shreyas Iyer’s departure. After winning the title in 2024, KKR endured two disappointing seasons, finishing eighth in 2025 and seventh in 2026.

Ajinkya Rahane has performed admirably at stages, but KKR now need a long-term leader. Hardik Pandya gives KKR a proven captain who took Gujarat Titans (GT) to a title and runners up in their first two seasons. He helped build a culture from scratch, and KKR now need a bit of a reset.

2. KKR need an Andre Russell replacement

Cameron Green’s high price tag drew plenty of attention. KKR forked out the investment with the hope of the all-rounder replicating at least some of what the great Andre Russell was able to produce.

However, while Green can bowl at a high pace and hit the ball a long way, he wasn’t quite able to deliver match-turning performances on a regular basis. That’s where Hardik Pandya comes in.

Hardik, a pace-bowling all-rounder who can finish games, has a proven track record of absorbing pressure and then coming up clutch with the match on the line. He and Rinku Singh can form an excellent duo when it comes to finishing an innings.

3. Clarity of role

A key priority for KKR is adding quality pace bowlers to their squad in IPL 2027. If they do, Pandya can fit in even more seamlessly considering the strength of the spin attack.

In that scenario, Hardik can operate more in the middle overs alongside Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, in contrast to MI where he bowled more in the powerplay due to the franchise’s bowling struggles.

With the bat, Hardik can also have a set role in the middle order with the likes of Finn Allen and Angkrish Raghuvanshi capable of setting excellent platforms.

4. Conditions at Eden Gardens suits Hardik’s style

Eden Gardens’ dimensions can suit Hardik’s batting style. He can turn games with his power-hitting, focusing on impact rather than looking to rebuild as was the case regularly with MI.

5. Environment would fully back Hardik Pandya

Hardik’s difficult tenure at MI shouldn’t be used against him. The management’s decision to remove Rohit Sharma as captain immediately put a target on the all-rounder’s back. He was booed around the country in 2023 and if reports are to be believed, lacked support from players.

A move for Hardik wouldn’t just represent a change of team. It would be a change in environment to one that fully backs him. It is then we may see the very best of him, and KKR could stand to benefit big time.
