The equation is simple for both Australia and Ireland in this crucial Group 1 clash. Win and significantly increase chances of qualification. Lose, and it’s pretty much all over, especially given the poor net run rates.
So, Australia’s first game at the Gabba in this World Cup is as cut-throat as it gets. Will it be a Halloween nightmare or treat? Aaron Finch and his team will be aiming for the former, with the margin of victory also crucial in case England beats New Zealand tomorrow.
That scenario poses a challenge. It can be easy to look ahead, but the Australians need to stay focused on the job at hand, particularly when you consider how under-par they have been so far in a home World Cup. Fluency for Aaron Finch, runs for David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, plus confidence for Glenn Maxwell and the bowlers is high on the agenda. If they can tick these boxes, along with a big win, it will be just about the perfect night for the hosts.
However, it is easier said than done. Ireland have proven time and time again they are no pushovers. With Andy Balbirnie’s team facing a similar scenario to Australia (two wins needed), the motivation will be high to perform. Also, they will be keen to test an Australian batting lineup that is on shaky ground, only held firm by Marcus Stoinis’ superb onslaught in Perth last week. Bring it on.
AUS vs IRE Possible Playing XI
Ahead of Australia’s game against England last week, Mark Waugh called for Cameron Green to replace Pat Cummins. Also, will Australia bring Steve Smith back? If so, for whom?
Australia: 1. David Warner, 2. Aaron Finch (c), 3. Mitchell Marsh, 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Marcus Stoinis, 6. Tim David/Steve Smith, 7. Matthew Wade (wk), 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Mitchell Starc, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Josh Hazlewood
Ireland may look to stick with the same team that won against England.
Ireland: 1. Paul Stirling, 2. Andy Balbirnie (c), 3. Lorcan Tucker (wk), 4. Harry Tector, 5. George Dockrell, 6. Curtis Campher, 7. Gareth Delany, 8. Mark Adair, 9. Barry McCarthy, 10. Fionn Hand, 11. Josh Little
Key Players to Watch/Key Stats
Australia:
- Australia needs a big innings from David Warner. The opener has scored 197 runs in six T20s at the Gabba (avg. 39.40, SR 141.73), including 75 off 41 against West Indies earlier this month.
- Glenn Maxwell has shown signs of his best form. But, he has a horror record in T20s at the Gabba. In seven innings, he has scored just 75 runs at an average of 10.71 and strike rate of 150.00. This includes one 30+ score (46).
- Marcus Stoinis is coming off the fastest T20I half-century for Australia. Also, he has some excellent numbers at the Gabba in T20s: 5 inns, 224 runs, avg. 56.00, SR 170.99, HS 99.
- Mitchell Starc took 4/20 on this ground against West Indies on October 7. He will be key against Paul Stirling, who has struggled against left-arm seam in T20s this year: 158 balls, 177 runs, 12 dismissals.
- Pat Cummins has taken seven wickets in three T20s at the Gabba (avg. 12.14, SR 10.29).

Ireland:
- Andy Balbirnie played a cracking knock against England (62), which was his second 30+ score in his last three games.
- Paul Stirling is Ireland’s leading scorer in this WC so far (122). But, 66 of those came in one innings, while the other 56 have come in four.
- George Dockrell may enjoy the pace of the Gabba track. In 21 innings this year, Dockrell has struck 409 runs at an average of 31.46 and impressive strike rate of 140.54.
- Josh Little will fancy his chances against Aaron Finch. In all white-ball internationals this year, Finch has been dismissed by left-arm seam eight times in 77 deliveries, scoring just 65 runs in the process.
- Fionn Hand (1/17 vs England) and Mark Adair (24 T20I wickets this year) can both swing the ball under the Gabba lights. Australia struggled against movement, particularly against New Zealand.
