T20 World Cup 2022: Group 1 Semi Finals Qualification Scenarios

1: New Zealand

Points: 5

NRR: +2.233

Remaining Match: Ireland

New Zealand’s loss to England means they must beat Ireland. Given their net run rate is very strong, victory by any margin will do.

If New Zealand lose to Ireland and Australia beat Afghanistan, the Black Caps will be eliminated as either England or Sri Lanka will also finish ahead.

2: England

Points: 5

NRR: +0.547

Remaining Match: Sri Lanka

England are now in pole position to reach the semi finals. Because Australia plays their final game on Friday before England on Saturday, Jos Buttler’s team will know exactly what they need to do to qualify. Given their net run rate is far superior to Australia’s, it is likely that victory by any margin against Sri Lanka will see them through.

3: Australia

Points: 5

NRR: -0.304

Remaining Match: Afghanistan

Australia have been playing catch up after the first up thrashing at the hands of New Zealand. They beat Sri Lanka and Ireland, but could have had greater net run rate boosts than what they ended up with.

Given their net run rate is worse than England’s, Australia must beat Afghanistan by a big margin and hope England either lose to Sri Lanka or beat them narrowly. For example, if Australia score 180 and bowl Afghanistan out for 120, Australia’s net run rate will move to +0.555, which will be higher than England’s 0.547. But, you feel that Australia will need an even bigger win than that to pressure England.

4: Sri Lanka

Points: 4

NRR: -0.457

Remaining Match: England

If Sri Lanka beats England, they will leapfrog Jos Buttler’s team. However, they will also need Afghanistan to beat Australia or Ireland to beat New Zealand so that either the Aussies or Kiwis remain on five.

5: Ireland

Points: 3

NRR: -1.304

Remaining Match: New Zealand

If Ireland beat New Zealand, they will finish on five points, level with the Black Caps. But, Ireland need Afghanistan to beat Australia. Also, Ireland’s net run rate is too far behind, which makes their hopes purely mathematical.

6: Afghanistan

Points: 2

NRR: -0.718

Remaining Match: Australia

The weather has been unkind to Afghanistan. Now, they are officially out after defeat to Sri Lanka. All they can do now is end Australia’s campaign with victory in Adelaide on Friday.
