Well, well, well. How the tables turn. Bangladesh have often had the better of Zimbabwe across formats over the past 15 years, but 2022 is a different story.

Earlier this year, the Zimbabweans beat Bangladesh 2-1 in both T20Is and ODIs. Now, they have a shot at a remarkable Semi Finals appearance, while Bangladesh continue to struggle in this format. When these two teams meet in international cricket, it is low key outside of the two countries, but there will be plenty of attention on this clash as the stakes are through the roof with so much on the line.

In its first game of this T20 World Cup, the Gabba in Brisbane will welcome star all-rounders Sikandar Raza and Shakib Al Hasan. Also, the pace attacks of both teams have promised plenty, with Zimbabwe’s seamers proving their worth on bouncy pitches and Taskin Ahmed leading the way for the Tigers. However, batting will be key for both sides, with boundary-hitting coupled with good strike rotation high on the agenda.

Will Bangladesh stick with the same XI that got smashed by 104 runs against South Africa? They may look to bring Yasir Ali back for six-hitting potential.

Bangladesh:

• The Tigers need a big contribution from Litton Das. The right-hander has scored 294 runs against Zimbabwe at an average of 42.00 and strike rate of 154.73. This includes three half-centuries in eight innings.
• Soumya Sarkar also has good numbers against the Zimbabweans in T20Is: 10 inns, 298 runs, avg. 37.25, SR 134.23.
• Shakib Al Hasan scored two fifties in the recent NZ Tri-Series, but is yet to fire in this World Cup. In 12 matches versus Zimbabwe, the star all-rounder has scored 233 runs at an average of 25.88 (SR 133.90), and has taken 16 wickets.
• Mustafizur Rahman has taken the most wickets in BAN-ZIM T20Is (22) at an average of 14.72 and economy of 6.84. However, 15 of those have come in different conditions in Bangladesh.
• Expect Taskin Ahmed to enjoy the pacy Gabba pitch. The seamer has taken five wickets in two matches so far, and will be keen to bounce back after a tough outing against South Africa.

Zimbabwe:

• Sikandar Raza, of course. The star all-rounder’s outstanding year continued against Pakistan, where he turned the match with his 3/25. Earlier this year against Bangladesh, Sikandar scored two fifties in the three-match T20I series and two hundreds in the three-match ODI series.
• Watch out for Wessly Madhevere. He looked in promising touch against Pakistan, and has some good numbers against Bangladesh: 8 inns, 230 runs, avg. 32.85, SR 127.07, three fifties.
• Ryan Burl has enjoyed success against Bangladesh. He has smashed 213 runs in eight T20Is against them at an average of 53.25 and strike rate of 158.95. This includes 34 off 14 balls against Shakib Al Hasan without dismissal.
• Blessing Muzarabani should enjoy the Gabba conditions. The tall seamer has taken seven wickets in four innings in this World Cup (SR 13.7), and has four wickets in three matches vs Bangladesh at an economy of just 5.66.
• Richard Ngarava will test Bangladesh’s left-handers, as will Brad Evans, who bowled well to Mohammad Nawaz in the last game. Like Muzarabani, expect Ngarava and Evans to test Bangladesh with bounce given the long Gabba square boundaries.

• Head-to-head: Matches 19, Bangladesh 12, Zimbabwe 7.
• This will be the first T20I between these teams outside of Bangladesh or Zimbabwe.
• Mosaddek Hossain took figures of 5/20 in Zimbabwe earlier this year. All five scalps came in the powerplay.
• Sean Williams averages just 12.40 in 15 T20Is vs Bangladesh. Craig Ervine doesn’t far much better, with an average of 16.12 in eight T20Is.
• Sikandar Raza has won three player of the match awards in this World Cup.

Gabba Brisbane Pitch Report and Weather

In what comes as a relief in this World Cup, the weather forecast for Brisbane is for a top of 31 degrees and mostly sunny conditions for this 1pm start (local time). This is quite the change for Zimbabwe as they have played their games in cold Hobart and chilly Perth so far. So, that will be a challenge to overcome.

The team batting first has won three of the four T20s at the Gabba this year, including Australia (178/7) by 31 runs against West Indies. The average first innings score in these matches is 165.25.
