Cricket News: Why was Rishabh Pant released from the India ODI squad? | Details on why Rishabh Pant was released from squad
Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant had asked the team management to release him from the One Day International (ODI) squad against Bangladesh, Cricbuzz reports. The publication has confirmed that his withdrawal from the limited-overs leg of the tour is not due to any disciplinary reason or any Covid-19 scare. Pant is likely to come back for the Test series starting from 14th December onwards.
An official statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that the southpaw was let go of from the squad on the recommendations of the medical team. However, Cricbuzz has mentioned that it cannot confirm the reason behind Pant seeking being released from the ODI series. No replacement has been sought but KL Rahul kept wickets in the first game and Ishan Kishan is already a part of the squad.
“In consultation with the BCCI Medical Team, Rishabh Pant has been released from the ODI squad. He will join the team ahead of the Test series. No replacement has been sought,” a BCCI statement regarding Pant read. Mohammed Shami had been ruled out of the entire series whereas Axar Patel was side-lined from the first ODI due to a rib injury.

Rishabh Pant released from ODI squad, but available for Tests
Patel, however, will be available for selection for the coming games. Shami, on the other hand, has reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to undergo rehabilitation for his shoulder injury. The team management is awaiting an update from the NCA regarding the same. This has put doubts over his possible participation in the Test series between the two nations starting from 14th December.
The two-match Test series is critical as it is India’s penultimate assignment of the on-going cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). Also, the team has its backs against the wall owing to its loss in the opening ODI and will have to emerge victorious in consecutive games to avoid a rather embarrassing series defeat.
