CSK’s all-rounders, who are expected to play a role again at their beloved Chepauk, will be key, while the RR top order has been in irresistible form to kickstart their campaign. The battles promise to be mouthwatering indeed.

Added to the drama are the questions each team faces. CSK will be without Deepak Chahar, so their powerplay bowling will be put to the test against the strong RR top order. RR still have question marks about their number four, and this can be amplified against CSK’s excellent spinners at Chepauk.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

Chennai Super Kings:

• Ruturaj Gaikwad has hit a ton against RR. In the other three innings, however, he has scored just 12 in total. But, he is in great form in IPL 2023 (189 runs), so he will be vital.
• Ajinkya Rahane was in vintage form against MI. He smashed 61 off 27 balls. But, he has struggled historically against Boult and Ashwin in the IPL (see Rajasthan Royals section).
• Moeen Ali was man of the match in CSK’s previous match at Chepauk. He took 4/26. Expect him to play a key role against RR’s left-handers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shimron Hetmyer.
• Ravindra Jadeja was back in vintage bowling form last match against MI. In 17 matches against RR, he has taken 17 wickets at an average of 22.47 and economy of 7.39.
• Maheesh Theekshana can certainly make a big impact on the Chepauk pitch. Expect him to be used early against the RR openers, especially when you consider he has conceded just 19 off 25 balls against Jos Buttler in T20s.

Rajasthan Royals:

• Jos Buttler has superb numbers against CSK. Since the start of 2018, Buttler has smashed 267 runs in seven innings at an average of 53.40 and strike rate of 146.70.
• Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 115 runs at an average of 38.33 and strike rate of 161.97 against CSK. He is in terrific form this season, with two fifties at an overall strike rate of 164.47.
• Sanju Samson averages just 16.00 in 13 innings against CSK. At Chepauk, the average falls lower to 14.86 in seven innings.
• Trent Boult vs Ruturaj Gaikwad is a battle to watch out for. Boult has dominated the opener, dismissing him three times for 22 runs in 24 deliveries in the IPL.
• Boult also has a great record against Rahane in the IPL. He has overall figures of 3/35 off 36 balls.
• R Ashwin was player of the match against CSK last season. He scored 40* (23) and took 1/28, dismissing Devon Conway LBW.
• Ashwin has enjoyed success against Rahane. He has dismissed him four times in 36 balls for 42 runs. The offspinner also has overall figures of 2/51 off 35 balls against Moeen Ali.
• Yuzvendra Chahal has taken 35 wickets in 20 matches since the start of last season. Against CSK, he has picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 23.25 and economy of 6.89.
