Such is the international calendar these days that merely two days after England’s remarkable, record-breaking pursuit of 378 at Edgbaston, attention turns to the T20I series against India.

And it is a new era that awaits. Jos Buttler officially takes over from Eoin Morgan, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Buttler takes the helm after Morgan helped build an incredible white-ball machine that stems back to 2015, with England now focused on adding the 2022 T20 World Cup to their 2019 ODI World Cup triumph.

Indeed, England’s all guns blazing approach will be a great test for India. Also, the Indians have a number of hard-hitters in their lineup, and a challenge awaits them in beating England in a power game away from home. It serves as brilliant preparation for this year’s World Cup, and if they can get victories on the board, it will only increase confidence further.

Harry Brook could get the nod for the middle order slot left by Eoin Morgan. Also, David Willey was released to play in the T20 Blast quarter-finals for Yorkshire on Wednesday.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

England:

• Jos Buttler is in imperious form. Soon after scoring the equal-most centuries in a single IPL season, Buttler then went on a rampage in Netherlands as England posted the highest ever ODI score.
• Buttler has the most runs for England against India in T20Is (373) at an average of 33.90 and strike rate of 141.82. Also, the new England captain has a great record in T20s at Southampton: 8 inns, 297 runs, avg. 59.40, SR 152.31.
• Moeen Ali is a different player when batting in the top four in T20s. Expect batting to be his main role as India have a number of right-handers in their batting lineup.
• Liam Livingstone is always one to watch. He smashed 437 runs in IPL 2022 at a strike rate of 182.08. Also, he scored one of England’s fastest ODI fifties against Netherlands recently.
• Watch out for Sam Curran, who is in terrific batting form. He scored 126 for Surrey in the County Championship in late June, followed by 50 (30) in the Vitality Blast. He will also be key with the ball.
• Chris Jordan will be aiming to improve his numbers vs India (11 inns, 10 wickets, avg. 40.40, econ. 9.50). He recently took 17 wickets in 13 matches in the Blast (econ. 8.00), and is always a factor in the hotspot fielding positions.
• Reece Topley has taken 10 wickets in six innings on this ground, but the economy rate of 9.05 is one to bring down. England also have the option of Richard Gleeson, who is a yorker specialist. He took 23 wickets from 14 games at an economy of 7.83 in the T20 Blast.

India:

• Rohit Sharma is back. He has scored 317 runs in 10 innings against England at an average of 39.62 and strike rate of 143.43. This includes a century in England.
• Deepak Hooda is coming off a magnificent tour of Ireland, where he smashed 151 runs in two matches. This included a brilliant 104* in the second T20I.
• A firing Hardik Pandya with bat and ball gives India a very different dimension. He has good all-round numbers against England, with 153 runs (avg. 25.50, SR 147.11) and nine wickets (avg. 27.33, SR 22) in 11 T20Is against them. This includes six scalps in three T20Is in England.
• England concede 11.73 runs per over at the death since the start of the 2021 World Cup. So, Hardik and Dinesh Karthik will be key as finishers.
• Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be crucial to India’s hopes. He has dismissed Jos Buttler thrice in 29 balls in T20 Internationals, whilst conceding just 28. Also, Bhuvi has conceded just 61 off 61 balls against Jason Roy in all T20s, with two dismissals.
• Also, Bhuvneshwar has never bowled to Moeen in T20s, but has dismissed the left-hander four times in 18 balls in ODIs.
• Yuzvendra Chahal has the most wickets in ENG-IND T20Is (12) at an average of 24.66 and economy rate of 8.22. However, Chahal wasn’t prolific in the 2018 series in England, where he took one wicket in three T20Is at an economy rate of 7.66.

• Jason Roy vs India: 12 inns, 325 runs, avg. 27.08, SR 143.17, one 50+ score.

Southampton has favoured sides batting first in the 2022 Vitality Blast. The average first innings score is 165, with the team batting first winning five of the seven matches. This stat is an interesting one as India have won just 54% of matches where they batted first in the last three years, compared 95% when chasing.
