The ODI series promised fireworks, but they didn’t light up at The Oval. Jasprit Bumrah tore England to shreds as India completed the most comfortable of victories in a wonderful exhibition of seam bowling.

Now, the series moves to Lord’s on the anniversary of the greatest ODI of all time. Spotlight will be on England’s “fab five” after a capitulation a couple of days ago, with a good start paramount against the brilliant Bumrah-Shami duo.

Also, Rohit’s form is a welcome plus for India, with a number of middle order players – namely Suryakumar, Hardik and Rishabh Pant – all enjoying excellent moments on this tour, too.

Key Players to Watch/Key Stats

England:

  • Jonny Bairstow can set the tone after a brilliant run in the Tests. He has struck two fifties in five ODIs at Lord’s, totalling 224 runs at an average of 56.00.
  • Despite his 7 in the first ODI, Bairstow still has strong numbers vs India: 14 inns, 589 runs, avg. 45.30, SR 105.74.
  • England’s capitulation in the opening match shows the importance of Joe Root. He will be tasked with keeping things ticking over. He has struck 365 runs in eight ODIs at Lord’s at an average of 52.14, including two fifties and a century.
  • Ben Stokes has enjoyed some memorable knocks at Lord’s, most notably his 84* in the World Cup Final exactly three years ago. He has struck 259 runs in seven ODIs at Lord’s (avg. 43.16) and 474 runs in 15 innings vs India (avg. 36.46).
  • Jos Buttler was England’s top scorer in the first match (30). But, the spotlight will continue to shine bright on the England captain, who averages just 21.23 in 17 ODI knocks vs India (361 runs).
  • David Willey will be key against India’s openers. He has dismissed Rohit once (22 runs off 39 balls) and Dhawan twice (50 runs off 70 balls) in ODIs.

India:

  • Rohit Sharma was at his best in the opening match as India strolled towards the target. His 76* further improved his wonderful ODI record in England, which now reads: 25 inns, 1,411 runs, avg. 70.55, SR 91.26.
  • Suryakumar Yadav will be itching for an opportunity after scoring a brilliant century in the third T20I.
  • Rishabh Pant in ODIs vs England: 187 runs, avg. 62.33, SR 142.74. Hardik Pandya’s all-round ability will be key for India. He recently smashed 51 and took 4/33 in the first T20I against England.
  • Jasprit Bumrah is now a record holder for India against England. He was on song in a magnificent bowling display at The Oval with 6/19. He has now taken 28 wickets in 15 ODIs overall in England at an average of 21.42.
  • Mohammed Shami (3/31) was also brilliant in the first ODI. The seamer now has 16 wickets in just six ODIs against England in England (avg. 15.75).
  • Watch out for Prasidh Krishna. He now has 19 wickets at 17.21 at an economy rate of 4.86 in ODIs so far.

Lord’s Pitch Report and Weather

A warm day is forecast in London. After England’s 110-all out at The Oval, there could be a shift towards a pitch with less grass. Also, expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to chase.
