Cricket News: Will Virat Kohli play in the 2nd ODI against England? | Will Virat Kohli play in the 2nd ODI at Lord’s?

Virat Kohli is likely to play the second One Day International (ODI) of the ongoing India-England series at Lord’s on Thursday due to a groin injury.

The former India skipper suffered this setback before the opening game of the series on Tuesday. He was replaced by Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer didn’t have to bat as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan’s unbeaten partnership helped India chase down the modest 110-run target with ease.

“I wasn’t playing in the last T20 game and he (Kohli) didn’t play today (Tuesday). I don’t have an update on his injury,” fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah addressed the issue, as reported by the Indian Express.

A groin strain can potentially worsen into a full-fledged tear if a player expedites his return to the field. However, Kohli was seen warming up in the nets before the second ODI.

Additionally, the Hindustan Times (HT) has stated that Kohli will be rested for India’s upcoming five-game T20I series vs West Indies (WI). The first T20I will take place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on 29th July.

Kohli’s return to the field after the England series might be pushed till 6th August provided that this news report comes out to be true.

Accordingly, he will be left with only the last couple of games of the WI series, a tour of Zimbabwe, the forthcoming Asia Cup and a home T20I series vs Australia as possible international assignments prior to the World T20 in October.

The former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain averages 20.25 with a strike rate of 128.57 in four T20Is in 2022. He endured a similarly indifferent Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign as Kohli notched runs at an average and scoring rate of 22.73 and 115.99 respectively this year.

On that note, he would have ideally liked to play as many T20Is as possible before the T20 World Cup. However, fate seems to be having different plans in store for the seasoned Indian batsman.
