The second edition of the Global T20 Canada reaches its showpiece match. Two sides who have stepped it up in the key matches will be out for glory, keen for one more big effort that sees them lift the trophy.

Vancouver Knights, winners of the 2018 edition, will be out to make it two triumphs in a row. Their massive win over Brampton Wolves in the first Qualifier was a significant warning shot, producing an all-round display to limit first-placed Brampton Wolves to just one double-figure scorer in Colin Munro. VK lost the group game against their opponents in the final, so they will be out for redemption in the match that matters most.

But, they have a significant obstacle on their way to two straight titles. Winnipeg Hawks, in the second Qualifier, achieved their fourth chase of 200 or more in GT20 Canada 2019. As the numbers show, WH’s bowling has been under-par in this tournament, but the ability of their batsmen to stand up and be counted will put VK on notice in the Final. Will it be WH who become the second winners of GT20 Canada?

Key to a Vancouver Knights win

VK will believe they have the bowling attack to tame WH’s dangerous batting lineup, even though they were thumped earlier in the tournament. In Saad Bin Zafar, Hayden Walsh and Daniel Sams, VK possess three bowlers in the top 10 wicket takers in GT20 Canada 2019. Even more encouraging was their display against first-place Brampton Wolves in the first Qualifier, with these three bowlers combining for nine wickets. Indeed, with WH possessing four players in the top 10 run scorers of the tournament, VK need a team effort in taking down the likes of Shaiman Anwar, Chris Lynn and JP Duminy.

The same team effort is needed with the bat. The loss of Chris Gayle to West Indies duty could have hurt their campaign, but VK have carried on nicely. The fast start set for Andre Russell in the Qualifier held VK in good stead, and more of the same is required in the Final. Indeed, an opportunity lies in the fact that WH have conceded a number of 200+ totals in GT20 Canada 2019, so Tobias Visee, Chadwick Walton, Rassie van der Dussen and Shoaib Malik (the glass breaker!) will be key in setting a strong platform for Russell and Daniel Sams to go big.

Key to a Winnipeg Hawks win

WH possess no bowler in the top 10 wicket takers in GT20 Canada 2019. So, a step up in intensity and execution is required in the Final, of which inroads in the powerplay is of utmost importance. The key will be to have Andre Russell enter the scene under pressure, which puts onus on the likes of Mohammad Irfan, Paul van Meekeren, Kaleem Sana and WH leading wicket taker Rayad Emrit to pick up regular wickets and put VK on the back foot. This is especially important as WH bowled a huge 33 extras and struggled with their fifth and sixth bowling option in the second Qualifier. Such a repeat could prove fatal here.

However, their strength is their batting, and need to play to it in the Final. As mentioned, four of their batsmen sit in the top 10 run scorers for the tournament, showcasing just how dangerous they can be. This has especially been the case when chasing big totals, but if they are required to set a score, the same intensity and quality can lead them to a total that might be too much for VK to handle. All eyes will be on the likes of Shaiman Anwar, Chris Lynn and JP Duminy as WH look to get the better of VK’s well-balanced attack.

Mostly sunny conditions are expected in Brampton on Sunday. Batting conditions, as has been the case in recent matches, are expected to be good once again.
