Gujarat Titans (GT) and Mumbai Indians (MI) played out a classic on May 6th, and we could be in for another as the sides meet in the IPL 2025 Eliminator. Both teams would feel a little disheartened by the fact they didn’t reach the top two, with defeats late in the league stage meaning they are faced with a do-or-die scenario immediately.

GT in particular were well set for a top two finish as they sat towards the top of the table for most of the campaign. Two straight defeats meant they finished third. However, they must learn from the defeats to LSG and CSK to get things right when it matters here.

The bowling has been all over the place. For LSG and CSK to smash 235/2 and 230/5 respectively is a reflection of GT’s lack of discipline and execution. If they repeat that here, MI have the players to take advantage.

That being said, MI aren’t without their challenges. Rohit Sharma’s form remains very indifferent as the bowling attack didn’t fire too much of a shot against PBKS earlier this week. Powerplay bowling will be vital against GT’s excellent opening combination, but even if MI make early inroads, they need to keep the pressure on as GT’s middle order, despite being largely untested, can cause a surprise.

This match will take place less than 24 hours after Qualifier 1 between RCB and PBKS.

It has been a mixed bag in Mullanpur. The first two matches here in IPL 2025 saw three 200-plus totals. The next game saw PBKS defend 111 against KKR on a surface offering assistance for both seam and spin bowlers.

• Hardik Pandya loves the big occasion. He could get himself on early against the GT openers given he has a dominant record against Gill: 23 balls, 19 runs, four wickets.

• Trent Boult can break the game open in the powerplay. He dismissed Sai Sudharsan in both meetings against GT this season and has kept Shubman Gill quiet in the IPL, conceding just 74 off 69 against him (one wicket).
• Jasprit Bumrah is the fifth-highest wicket-taker this season (17), despite playing just ten matches. This includes an outstanding 2/19 against GT on May 6th. He has a strong record against Gill, with overall figures of 2/34 off 38 balls.

• Mitchell Santner has taken nine wickets this season, eight of which are right-handers. GT have a number of left-handers which could limit his impact.
