An India v Australia series began in the only way we know an India v Australia series to be.
India’s T20I form took another hit in Vizag. They have now won just two of their last six completed matches against Australia and New Zealand. While that isn’t cause for panic yet, the talent in their side suggests they can deliver better in key moments, which is what they will be after in Bangalore. After another shaky start to an Australian limited overs series, can India bounce back, just as they did in the T20I and ODI series down under in the summer?
It was one hell of a roller-coaster ride for Australia. They had the game won, then lost, then won again in Vizag. The form of their bowlers (particularly Coulter-Nile), as well as D’Arcy Short and Glenn Maxwell, is cause for encouragement as the Aussies look to pick up their second series win in a row across formats. Can they hold their nerve a little better to finally convert good moments vs India into series wins?

Key to an India win
It was a very disappointing batting performance by India in the first T20I. Sitting relatively pretty at 80/2 in 9.5 overs should mean a total of 160+, but it was anything but, crawling to 126/7.
In Bangalore, onus is on the top order to set up a strong platform, which then must be followed up well by the likes of Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni. The middle order struggled badly in Vizag, which saw just 46 runs scored in the second half of the innings. Can KL Rahul build in his first up 50? Will Rohit Sharma (if picked), get India off to a flyer? Can Rishabh Pant lay down a marker in an India shirt, and will MS Dhoni get the chance to play with more freedom? With Virat Kohli also looking promising in the first match, and now playing at a ground he loves, India have the resources to put together a much more complete batting performance in Bangalore.

However, while the batting was under par, the bowling wasn’t. The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium can be a graveyard for bowlers, but India can believe they can get the better of the Australians in the second T20I. Jasprit Bumrah was absolutely outstanding in his return, but what support will he get? Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Krunal Pandya were tidy, but India need bowling partnerships, as they do batting. It will be a surprise if Umesh Yadav plays, which places onus on his replacement – Siddarth Kaul – to deliver the goods for Virat Kohli. Can India pick up early wickets again and then follow it up with regular wickets?
Key to an Australia win
Nathan Coulter-Nile is a sight to behold when fit and firing. Vizag’s man of the match will have his consistency tested in Bangalore, where Australia will be keen for powerplay and middle overs wickets to halt India’s progress. With Jason Behrendhorff a viable option against Rohit Sharma, Australia can hope to get the better of at least two of India’s top three, then forcing a rebuild in the middle overs. Remember, India really struggled with this in Vizag. Can Australia force MS Dhoni to rebuild, and thus force some dot balls? Will the likes of Behrendhorff, Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa continue on from their good showing on Sunday?

Also, Australia need to better hold their nerve with the bat. They nearly lost the unloseable game, allowing India back into the game with poor cricket. Once again, Australia seem to be able to get starts and set platforms, but are unable to go on with the job, which is something they must do to win the series. However, one man who is struggling to even set platforms is skipper Aaron Finch, who must overcome Jasprit Bumrah early to set up a partnership with the equally important Marcus Stoinis and D’Arcy Short. A strong powerplay for Australia sets the tone, allowing for the likes of Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell to keep the scoreboard moving, ensuring there is at least one set batsman at the crease for those crucial death overs against Jasprit Bumrah.
Possible Playing 11
Very much expecting changes for India. Umesh Yadav, after his disappointing final over to Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson, will likely be dropped. Siddarth Kaul is set to get a chance. Vijay Shankar could be considered, with India possibly needing another bowling option. Also, it remains to be seen whether KL Rahul gets another run, given he was top scorer for India last game. Does he, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma all play, with India possibly leaving out Dinesh Karthik or Rishabh Pant?
India: 1. Shikhar Dhawan/KL Rahul, 2. Rohit Sharma, 3. Virat Kohli (c), 4. Rishabh Pant, 5. MS Dhoni (wk), 6. Dinesh Karthik, 7. Krunal Pandya, 8. Siddarth Kaul, 9. Yuzvendra Chahal, 10. Mayank Markande, 11. Jasprit Bumrah
Australia are likely to make less changes than India, but could look to give Usman Khawaja a chance ahead of the ODI series.
Australia: 1. D’Arcy Short, 2. Marcus Stoinis, 3. Aaron Finch (c), 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Peter Handscomb (wk), 6. Ashton Turner, 7. Nathan Coulter-Nile, 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Jhye Richardson, 10. Adam Zampa, 11. Jason Behrendhorff

Stats and Facts
- Australia have won the first game of each of the last three limited overs series against India (Brisbane, Sydney and Vizag). They failed to win the previous two series.
- India have won two of three T20Is at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, including the famous win over Bangladesh at World T20 2016.
- Both of the previous two T20I series between these sides ended 1-1.
Match Prediction
Australia have a great opportunity to pick up a series win ahead of the five match ODI series.
Any chance to build confidence in a World Cup year is important to take.
However, while I give Australia a huge chance, India will be out to learn from their mistakes at Vizag. They usually bounce back very well at home after a first up loss, and I expect them to do it again in a high scoring clash.
