Another day, another thrilling last over finish in IPL 2023? It’s definitely a possibility. Two sides on a high, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), meet in an intruiging clash with the aim of building on recent victories to keep pace with the tournament leaders.

KKR are certainly on a high and have proven they are not beaten when there is still hope. After losing convincingly to Punjab Kings, Shardul Thakur was outstanding with the bat against RCB, followed by Rinku Singh pulling off the heist to end all heists.

However, what these trends suggest is KKR are reliant on individual brilliance after getting themselves into trouble. The law of averages can eventually catch up with you, so the Knight Riders will be after a more consistent showing, starting with their death bowling and top order batting.

For SRH, they too have enjoyed victory after a horrid start to the tournament. The addition of Mayank Markande gives the team such an added strength, but with the right-handed nature of their batting lineup, they must ensure they don’t allow KKR’s quality spinners to settle.

KKR may persist with Lockie Ferguson over Tim Southee. Litton Das and Jason Roy are available for KKR, so either may replace Gurbaz with N Jagadeesan to take the gloves.

Kolkata Knight Riders:

• Venkatesh Iyer is in terrific touch. He smashed 83 off 40 balls in the last game vs GT, part of an overall strike rate of 160 in IPL 2023.
• Nitish Rana has scored 366 runs in 11 matches against SRH since the start of 2018. He averages 33.27 with a strike rate of 136.06.
• Man of the moment Rinku Singh is one to watch, again. Since the start of 2022, Rinku has smashed 175 runs at an average of 43.8 and strike rate of 173.3 when chasing in the IPL.
• Sunil Narine will be key against an SRH side that has had its issues against spin this season. Interestingly, he has struggled against Hyderabad in the past, taking just 11 wickets in 20 matches at an average of 46.27.
• Umesh Yadav has dismissed Mayank Agarwal twice in 29 deliveries in the IPL, conceding just 29 in the process.
• Varun Chakravarthy has taken five wickets in three matches in IPL 2023, including 4/15 against RCB on this ground.

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

• Rahul Tripathi, who hit a classy 74* in the last match against PBKS, has had the better of Umesh Yadav in the IPL. In 33 balls against him, he has hammered 69 runs without dismissal.
• Tripathi also has excellent numbers against Narine: 48 balls, 71 runs, zero dismissals.
• Aiden Markram has scored 40 runs off 20 balls against Varun Chakravathy without dismissal. In 2023, the SRH captain has struck 490 runs in 17 T20s at an average of 37.69 and strike rate of 137.64.
• Heinrich Klaasen is a player to watch. In 12 T20 innings this year, Klaasen has hammered 386 runs at an average of 48.25 and strike rate of 166.38.
• SRH may keep an over or two for Bhuvneshwar Kumar against Nitish Rana. The seamer has dismissed the KKR captain twice in 35 balls in the IPL, conceding just 39.
• Kumar has the most wickets in KKR-SRH matches (22) at an average of 26.86 and economy of 8.10.
• Watch out for Mayank Markande. The legspinner was outstanding against PBKS, taking 4/15. He spun the ball beautifully each way.

RCB struggled against spin on what was a pretty good batting surface. Both SRH and KKR have quality spinners who can exploit any turn available, in addition to the pace on offer at Eden Gardens. So, a high-scoring game is possible, but wickets are certainly a possibility, too.

There were two high-scoring matches on this ground in IPL 2022. Gujarat chased Rajasthan’s 188 with three balls to spare, before RCB scored 207 and beat LSG by 16 runs. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in October and November 2022, the average first innings score in seven matches was 176.14. The team batting first won four of these games.
