New Zealand vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Preview Dream11. NZ vs BAN 2nd Test Preview Dream11 Prediction

With significant focus on ODI cricket and the upcoming World Cup, it can be easy to cast Test cricket aside for the moment. This can be especially so after a one-sided Test in Hamilton, where records and spirits were broken.

New Zealand showed no mercy on poor Bangladesh. The Black Caps resumed normal service after a less-than-satisfactory opening session, restricting Bangladesh to a paltry 234. Then, their batsmen filled their boots, making a record 715/6, highlighting their desire to keep the foot on the throat when on top. Weather could get in the way in Wellington, but New Zealand will be keen for another well-drilled, clinical performance en-route to a 2-0 series lead.

For Bangladesh, it seems their problems can’t be solved in a single match. Their pace bowlers started so encouragingly on the first day, but then lacked the fitness and discipline required to keep the pressure on. It resulted in an unforgiving stay in the field. Improving the standard of pace bowling from Bangladesh has to be a priority for the BCB, as Bangladesh continue to struggle away from home. However, the performances of Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar and Mahmdullah, all of whom scored hundreds, is pleasing for Bangladesh, as they eye a bounce-back in the series. Can they compete better, and for longer?

Key to a New Zealand win

While the forecast across the Test match isn’t too encouraging, the green strip certainly is for New Zealand’s pace trio. Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner accounted for 19 of the 20 Bangladeshi wickets to fall in Hamilton. Once again, there is no doubt they will be central to the result in Wellington, causing Bangladesh problems with a mix of swing, seam and short-pitched bowling. However, one area New Zealand would like to improve is their control, after leaking runs at a high rate at times during the first Test. If they can dismiss Tamim Iqbal early, it could be one tough innings for Bangladesh.

Also, New Zealand’s top three can once again suck the life out of Bangladesh. Jeet Raval and Tom Latham, despite some nervy moments early, were relentless against a Bangladesh attack that lost its bite. With Mustafizur likely to return for the Tigers, how Zealand handle the new ball will be key, with a wicketless start likely to have the doubts creep in further for Bangladesh. With the tourists struggling for control from spin, and with Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls to follow, New Zealand can hope for another huge total that bats Bangladesh into oblivion.

Key to a Bangladesh win

Could you imagine the party in the Dhaka streets if Bangladesh pull this off?

To have a chance, Bangladesh’s batting must improve. Yes, the 400+ score in the second innings was mighty encouraging, but it was too little, too late as the damage was done. A strong start in the first innings should have resulted in 400+, instead collapsing to an under par score, which is something they must avoid in Wellington. Tamim Iqbal will be crucial at the top, along with Shadman Islam who promised plenty with his two starts. Bangladesh also need Mominul Haque to have a better game, setting the platform for last-match centurions Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar to continue on from their strong efforts.

However, for Bangladesh to win, they somehow need to take 20 wickets. To do so, the new ball is critical to their cause. Abu Jayed and Edadat Hossain encouragingly found some movement early, but were let down by Soumya Sarkar’s crucial dropped catch with New Zealand on zero. Then, they lost their zip. In Wellington, Bangladesh’s seamers, led by the expected return of Mustafizur Rahman, must keep the pressure on early, targeting a full length on the off-stump of New Zealand’s top order. Early wickets can boost confidence, which brings Bangladesh into the game thanks to greater belief. Can they maintain discipline and threat for an extended period of time?

Possible Playing 11

If there is a bowler who deserves a chance, it’s Matt Henry. However, unless New Zealand leave out Todd Astle, Henry will have to wait till a possible dead rubber in the third Test before getting a chance.

New Zealand: 1. Jeet Raval, 2. Tom Latham, 3. Kane Williamson (c), 4. Ross Taylor, 5. Henry Nicholls, 6. BJ Watling (wk), 7. Colin de Grandhomme, 8. Todd Astle, 9. Tim Southee, 10. Neil Wagner, 11. Trent Boult

For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz could be left out after conceding the most runs by a Bangladeshi in a single innings (246). With Courtney Walsh asking for an extended run of games for Bangladesh’s seamers, expect the trio from Hamilton to play. However, this really extends Bangladesh’s already long tail.

Bangladesh: 1. Tamim Iqbal, 2. Shadman Islam, 3. Mominul Haque, 4. Mohammad Mithun, 5. Mahmudullah, 6. Liton Das (wk), 7. Soumya Sarkar, 8. Khaled Ahmed/Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9. Abu Jayed, 10. Ebadat Hossain, 11. Mustafizur Rahman

Key stats and points:

  • Basin Reserve’s pitch is expected to have assistance in it for the quicks early in the Test.
  • Kane Williamson, Tom Latham and Ross Taylor all average 50+ at this ground. However, Jeet Raval, who averages 40, is still a strong option. So too Henry Nicholls, who also averages 50+, but New Zealand’s top order is too hard to ignore against this attack.
  • Both Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque have half centuries at the Basin. However, Soumya Sarkar showed good form in Hamilton with a great 149, and is a decent option also with his seamers.
  • All three of New Zealand’s pace trio average over 30 at the Basin. However, against Bangladesh, at least two of the three is a must.
  • Mahmudullah has three centuries in Bangladesh’s last three Tests.
  • Mustafizur Rahman provides Bangladesh’s greatest threat with the ball. However, there is also a bit to like about Ebadat Hossain, who will be good from the run in Hamilton.

Stats and Facts

  • Kane Williamson is poised to overtake Virat Kohli as world number one in the Test batting rankings. The New Zealand skipper is the first Black Cap since Richard Hadlee to reach 900 ranking points.
  • New Zealand have never lost a game to Bangladesh at home, in any format.
  • In their last match at the Basin Reserve, Bangladesh scored 595/8 and still lost.

Match Prediction

If the weather holds, New Zealand should have too much in the locker for Bangladesh.

The Tigers will have their moments, as they often do, but they just lack so much with the ball in these conditions.

New Zealand to win.
